    A pilot study investigating of the nature of point-of-sale alcohol promotions in bottle shops in a large Australian regional city

    Objective: The promotion of alcohol by retailers and media can contribute to a culture of excessive alcohol consumption, but the effect of non-advertising alcohol promotions has largely been neglected. This study sought to gather initial data on this important area.Method: An observational study of alcohol point-of-sale promotions in the Wollongong CBD area, conducted in July-August 2005.Results: We identified 17 different promotions in three categories: gift with purchase; competitions; and buy some, get some free.Conclusions: Given previous research demonstrating the relationship between increased alcohol consumption and both ownership of alcohol-related merchandise and reduced per unit price, it appears that point-of-sale promotions may have the potential to further increase alcohol consumption among young people.Implications: Only when the extent and impact of such promotions is demonstrated will we be in a position to effectively advocate for appropriate regulations to ensure young people are not exposed to marketing strategies that further increase their exposure to alcohol-related harms

    POP promotions for alcolhol: increasing brand loyalty or just increasing binge drinking?

    The consumption of alcohol by young Australians in general, and at risky levels has increased. University students, as part of this group, display consistent and increasing risky drinking patterns. One key area of interest in understanding this situation is the use of alcohol advertising and marketing. Of particular interest to this research is the use of point-of-purchase promotions in licensed venues and the impact they may have on consumption. In order to help understand these promotions, focus groups were conducted with male university students between the age of 18 and 24 years from the University of Wollongong. Overall, the perception of these promotions was that they encouraged male university students to drink at risky levels.     Mandibuloacral Dysplasia Caused by LMNA Mutations and Uniparental Disomy.

    Mandibuloacral dysplasia (MAD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by postnatal growth retardation, craniofacial anomalies, skeletal malformations, and mottled cutaneous pigmentation. Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) is characterized by the clinical features of accelerated aging in childhood. Both MAD and HGPS can be caused by mutations in the LMNA gene. In this study, we describe a 2-year-old boy with overlapping features of MAD and HGPS. Mutation analysis of the LMNA gene revealed a homozygous missense change, p.M540T, while only the mother carries the mutation. Uniparental disomy (UPD) analysis for chromosome 1 showed the presence of maternal UPD. Markers in the 1q21.3-q22 region flanking the LMNA locus were isodisomic, while markers in the short arm and distal 1q region were heterodisomic. These results suggest that nondisjunction in maternal meiosis followed by loss of the paternal chromosome 1 during trisomy rescue might result in the UPD1 and homozygosity for the p.M540T mutation observed in this patient

    Australian adolescents are consistently found to exhibit low levels of adherence to sun protection guidelines, resulting in high levels of skin cancer incidence in later life. Given the importance of image, appearance, and peer approval factors in adolescent sun protection, this study sought to examine adolescents’ perceptions of the “sun protection brand,” its competing brands, and possible complementary brands. A series of 14 focus groups were conducted with adolescents in Years 9 and 10 (junior high school), and the results are examined in the context of potential branding-related marketing strategies to overcome some of the barriers to sun protection

    Binary Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae Discovered Through Photometric Variability III: The Central Star of Abell 65

    A growing number of close binary stars are being discovered among central stars of planetary nebulae. Recent and ongoing surveys are finding new systems and contributing to our knowledge of the evolution of close binary systems. The push to find more systems was largely based on early discoveries which suggested that 10 to 15% of all central stars are close binaries. One goal of this series of papers is confirmation and classification of these systems as close binaries and determination of binary system parameters. Here we provide time-resolved multi-wavelength photometry of the central star of Abell 65 as well as further analysis of the nebula and discussion of possible binary--nebula connections. Our results for Abell 65 confirm recent work showing that it has a close, cool binary companion, though several of our model parameters disagree with the recently published values. With our longer time baseline of photometric observations from 1989--2009 we also provide a more precise orbital period of 1.0037577 days.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa

    Being a parent of a child with autism and/or a developmental disorder may cause profound effects on the parents\u27 relationships with others (Trepagnier, 1999). This qualitative study describes how a diagnosis of autism and/or a developmental disorder for a child affects the parent\u27s relationships with others. The goal is to help nurses determine appropriate interventions for these clients. Following Human Subjects Review Board approval, a researcher-developed questionnaire was completed by a convenience sample of six parents known to the researcher and known to have a child with autism and/or a developmental disorder. The findings of the study indicate that all of the parents first seemed to notice a speech development problem with their child. Following an initial visit with the child\u27s pediatrician, each set of parents was encouraged to take their child for a hearing consultation. Other evaluations by a speech therapist, an occupational therapist, and a physical therapist were conducted. Along with the doctor\u27s advice, the Internet seemed to be the most valuable source for information regarding the condition and treatments. All of the mothers tended to be more open about the effects that the pervasive developmental disorder diagnosis has on the relationships around them. Four out of six parents admitted that the diagnosis has affected other relationships. An overall sense of powerlessness was reported among each of the participants. Knowledge of parents\u27 perceptions is essential as nurses meet the needs of families whose child has been diagnosed with autism and/or a developmental disorder

    Pramlintide in the Management of Obesity

    Obesity is a common problem that can lead to numerous comorbid conditions, including Type 2 diabetes. Currently, there are few pharmacologic options available to help obese patients lose weight. Pramlintide is an injectable, amylin analogue that is indicated in patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes for use in conjunction with insulin to improve glycemic control. In addition to helping patients decrease hemoglobin A1c levels, pramlintide has also been shown to minimize weight gain, especially in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Studies have been conducted in various patient types, including those patients without diabetes, and the drug tends to have a positive effect on weight loss. It appears that the drug is well tolerated in patients without diabetes; however, current studies have been conducted in small patient populations. Additional research needs to be carried out to determine if the drug is a viable option for obese patients who have failed to respond to other weight loss products

    BackgroundBacteria inhabiting the human body have important roles in a number of physiological processes and are known to be shared amongst genetically-related individuals. Far less is known about viruses inhabiting the human body, but their ecology suggests they may be shared between close contacts.ResultsHere, we report the ecology of viruses in the guts and mouths of a cohort and demonstrate that substantial numbers of gut and oral viruses were shared amongst genetically unrelated, cohabitating individuals. Most of these viruses were bacteriophages, and each individual had distinct oral and gut viral ecology from their housemates despite the fact that some of their bacteriophages were shared. The distribution of bacteriophages over time within households indicated that they were frequently transmitted between the microbiomes of household contacts.ConclusionsBecause bacteriophages may shape human oral and gut bacterial ecology, their transmission to household contacts suggests they could have substantial roles in shaping the microbiota within a household
