A Comparison of Video and Accelerometer Based Approaches Applied to Performance Monitoring in Swimming.
The aim of this paper is to present a comparison of video- and sensor based studies of swimming performance. The video-based approach is reviewed and contrasted to the newer sensor-based technology, specifically accelerometers based upon Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology. Results from previously published swim performance studies using both the video and sensor technologies are summarised and evaluated against the conventional theory that upper arm
movements are of primary interest when quantifying free-style technique. The authors conclude that multiple sensor-based measurements of swimmers’ acceleration profiles have the potential to offer significant advances in coaching technique over the traditional video based approach
Control theory for principled heap sizing
We propose a new, principled approach to adaptive heap sizing based on control theory. We review current state-of-the-art heap sizing mechanisms, as deployed in Jikes RVM and HotSpot. We then formulate heap sizing as a control problem, apply and tune a standard controller algorithm, and evaluate its performance on a set of well-known benchmarks. We find our controller adapts the heap size more responsively than existing mechanisms. This responsiveness allows tighter virtual machine memory footprints while preserving target application throughput, which is ideal for both embedded and utility computing domains. In short, we argue that formal, systematic approaches to memory management should be replacing ad-hoc heuristics as the discipline matures. Optimization of Partial Search
Quantum Grover search algorithm can find a target item in a database faster
than any classical algorithm. One can trade accuracy for speed and find a part
of the database (a block) containing the target item even faster, this is
partial search. A partial search algorithm was recently suggested by Grover and
Radhakrishnan. Here we optimize it. Efficiency of the search algorithm is
measured by number of queries to the oracle. The author suggests new version of
Grover-Radhakrishnan algorithm which uses minimal number of queries to the
oracle. The algorithm can run on the same hardware which is used for the usual

A transdiagnostic data-driven study of children's behaviour and the functional connectome.
Behavioural difficulties are seen as hallmarks of many neurodevelopmental conditions. Differences in functional brain organisation have been observed in these conditions, but little is known about how they are related to a child's profile of behavioural difficulties. We investigated whether behavioural difficulties are associated with how the brain is functionally organised in an intentionally heterogeneous and transdiagnostic sample of 957 children aged 5-15. We used consensus community detection to derive data-driven profiles of behavioural difficulties and constructed functional connectomes from a subset of 238 children with resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data. We identified three distinct profiles of behaviour that were characterised by principal difficulties with hot executive function, cool executive function, and learning. Global organisation of the functional connectome did not differ between the groups, but multivariate patterns of connectivity at the level of Intrinsic Connectivity Networks (ICNs), nodes, and hubs significantly predicted group membership in held-out data. Fronto-parietal connector hubs were under-connected in all groups relative to a comparison sample and children with hot vs cool executive function difficulties were distinguished by connectivity in ICNs associated with cognitive control, emotion processing, and social cognition. This demonstrates both general and specific neurodevelopmental risk factors in the functional connectome

Right to Serve, Right to Lead: Lives and Legacies of the USCT
This is a catalog for an exhibit that follows the evolution of African-American participation in the Civil War, from slaves, to contrabands, to soldiers of the United States Colored Troops (USCT), as well as the lives of black veterans beyond the war, and their ultimate military and social legacy. Using a variety of period items, it creates a narrative that stretches from the Antebellum Period to the current day. In doing so, the exhibit shows how black sacrifice on the battlefield redefined the war\u27s purpose throughout the divided nation, how Jim Crowe suppressed the memory of black participation after Reconstruction, and how the illustrious African-American military tradition left by the USCT endures to this day in their modern heirs
Design of 3D-Printed Titanium Compliant Mechanisms
This paper describes 3D-printed titanium compliant mechanisms for aerospace applications. It is meant as a primer to help engineers design compliant, multi-axis, printed parts that exhibit high performance. Topics covered include brief introductions to both compliant mechanism design and 3D printing in titanium, material and geometry considerations for 3D printing, modeling techniques, and case studies of both successful and unsuccessful part geometries. Key findings include recommended flexure geometries, minimum thicknesses, and general design guidelines for compliant printed parts that may not be obvious to the first time designer
