Larvae (caterpillars) damage trees by tunneling just beneath the bark of the trunk and branches (Figure 1), most commonly on the trunk just below a branch. The tunnels they make can girdle the trunk or branches or physically weaken them so they are easily broken by wind or snow (Figure 2). Theoretical and computational study of high pressure structures in barium
Recent high pressure work has suggested that elemental barium forms a high
pressure self-hosting structure (Ba IV) involving two `types' of barium atom.
Uniquely among reported elemental structures it cannot be described by a single
crystalline lattice, instead involving two interpenetrating incommensurate
lattices. In this letter we report pseudopotential calculations demonstrating
the stability and the potentially disordered nature of the `guest' structure.
Using band structures and nearly-free electron theory we relate the appearance
of Ba IV to an instability in the close-packed structure, demonstrate that it
has a zero energy vibrational mode, and speculate about the structure's

Income and Poverty in a Developing Economy
We present a stochastic agent-based model for the distribution of personal
incomes in a developing economy. We start with the assumption that incomes are
determined both by individual labour and by stochastic effects of trading and
investment. The income from personal effort alone is distributed about a mean,
while the income from trade, which may be positive or negative, is proportional
to the trader's income. These assumptions lead to a Langevin model with
multiplicative noise, from which we derive a Fokker-Planck (FP) equation for
the income probability density function (IPDF) and its variation in time. We
find that high earners have a power-law income distribution while the low
income groups have a Levy IPDF. Comparing our analysis with the Indian survey
data (obtained from the world bank website) taken over many years we obtain a
near-perfect data collapse onto our model's equilibrium IPDF. The theory
quantifies the economic notion of "given other things". Using survey data to
relate the IPDF to actual food consumption we define a poverty index, which is
consistent with traditional indices, but independent of an arbitrarily chosen
"poverty line" and therefore less susceptible to manipulation
Validity of the Postoperative Morbidity Survey after abdominal aortic aneurysm repair—a prospective observational study
BACKGROUND: Currently, there is no standardised tool used to capture morbidity following abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. The aim of this prospective observational study was to validate the Postoperative Morbidity Survey (POMS) according to its two guiding principles: to only capture morbidity substantial enough to delay discharge from hospital and to be a rapid, simple screening tool. METHODS: A total of 64 adult patients undergoing elective infrarenal AAA repair participated in the study. Following surgery, the POMS was recorded daily, by trained research staff with the clinical teams blinded, until hospital discharge or death. We modelled the data using Cox regression, accounting for the competing risk of death, with POMS as a binary time-dependent (repeated measures) internal covariate. For each day for each patient, ‘discharged’ (yes/no) was the event, with the elapsed number of days post-surgery as the time variable. We derived the hazard ratio for any POMS morbidity (score 1–9) vs. no morbidity (zero), adjusted for type of repair (endovascular versus open), age and aneurysm size. RESULTS: The hazard ratio for alive discharge with any POMS-recorded morbidity versus no morbidity was 0.130 (95 % confidence interval 0.070 to 0.243). The median time-to-discharge was 13 days after recording any POMS morbidity vs. 2 days after scoring zero for POMS morbidity. Compliance with POMS completion was 99.5 %. CONCLUSIONS: The POMS is a valid tool for capturing short-term postoperative morbidity following elective infrarenal AAA repair that is substantial enough to delay discharge from hospital. Daily POMS measurement is recommended to fully capture morbidity and allow robust analysis. The survey could be a valuable outcome measure for use in quality improvement programmes and future research
A meta-analysis of two randomised trials of early chemotherapy in asymptomatic metastatic colorectal cancer
This report constitutes a prospectively planned meta-analysis combining two almost identical trials undertaken in Australasia and Canada to study the effect of starting chemotherapy immediately in asymptomatic patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Patients (n=168) were randomised to receive either immediate or delayed treatment (at onset of predefined symptoms). Australasian patients received either weekly 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin (500 and 20 mg m−2, respectively) (n=59) or the daily × 5 Mayo Clinic schedule (425 and 20 mg m−2, respectively) (n=42). Canadian patients were treated with the Mayo schedule (n=67). Otherwise, the two studies were almost identical in design and each used the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-C30 instrument for measuring quality of life (QoL). Treatment was continued until 6 months had elapsed or disease progression occurred. Low accrual led to trial suspension before the predetermined sample size for either study was reached. Median survival was not significantly better with immediate treatment (median 13.0 vs 11.0 months; hazard ratio, 1.15; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.79–1.72; P=0.49). There was no statistically significant difference in progression-free survival (time from randomisation until first evidence of progression after chemotherapy, 10.2 vs 10.8 months; hazard ratio, 1.08; 95% CI 0.71–1.64; P=0.73). There was no difference in overall QoL or its individual domains between the two treatment strategies at baseline or at any subsequent time point. Early treatment of asymptomatic patients with metastatic colorectal cancer did not provide a survival benefit or improved QoL compared to withholding treatment until symptoms occurred
Phonons and related properties of extended systems from density-functional perturbation theory
This article reviews the current status of lattice-dynamical calculations in
crystals, using density-functional perturbation theory, with emphasis on the
plane-wave pseudo-potential method. Several specialized topics are treated,
including the implementation for metals, the calculation of the response to
macroscopic electric fields and their relevance to long wave-length vibrations
in polar materials, the response to strain deformations, and higher-order
responses. The success of this methodology is demonstrated with a number of

Role of platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor/thymidine phosphorylase in fluoropyrimidine sensitivity
Platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor (PD-ECGF)/thymidine phosphorylase (TP) catalyses the reversible phosphorolysis of thymidine to thymine and 2-deoxyribose-1-phosphate and is involved in the metabolism of fluoropyrimidines. It can also activate 5'-deoxyfluorouridine (5'DFUR) and possibly 5-fluorouracil (5FU) and Ftorafur (Ft), but inactivates trifluorothymidine (TFT). We studied the contribution of TP activity to the sensitivity for these fluoropyrimidines by modulating its activity and/or expression level in colon and lung cancer cells using a specific inhibitor of TIP (TPI) or by overproduction of TIP via stable transfection of human TP. Expression was analysed using competitive template-RT-PCR (CT-RT-PCR), Western blot and an activity assay. TP activity ranged from nondetectable to 70678 pmol h(-1) 10(-6) cells, in Colo320 and a TP overexpressing clone Colo320TPI, respectively. We found a good correlation between TIP activity and mRNA expression (r = 0.964, P <0.01) in our cell panel. To determine the role of TIP in the sensitivity to 5FU, 5'DFUR, Ft and TFT, cells were cultured with the various fluoropyrimidines with or without TPI and differences in IC50's were established. TPI modified 5'DFUR, increasing the IC50's 2.5- to 1396-fold in WiDR and Colo320TPI, respectively. 5-Fluorouracil could be modified by inhibiting TP but to a lesser extent than 5'DFUR: IC50's increased 1.9- to 14.7-fold for WiDR and Colo320TPI, respectively. There was no effect on TFT or Ft. There appears to be a threshold level of TP activity to influence the 5'DFUR and 5FU sensitivity, which is higher for 5FU.
