    Formation and Collapse of Nonaxisymmetric Protostellar Cores in Planar Magnetic Interstellar Clouds: Formulation of the Problem and Linear Analysis

    We formulate the problem of the formation and collapse of nonaxisymmetric protostellar cores in weakly ionized, self-gravitating, magnetic molecular clouds. In our formulation, molecular clouds are approximated as isothermal, thin (but with finite thickness) sheets. We present the governing dynamical equations for the multifluid system of neutral gas and ions, including ambipolar diffusion, and also a self-consistent treatment of thermal pressure, gravitational, and magnetic (pressure and tension) forces. The dimensionless free parameters characterizing model clouds are discussed. The response of cloud models to linear perturbations is also examined, with particular emphasis on length and time scales for the growth of gravitational instability in magnetically subcritical and supercritical clouds. We investigate their dependence on a cloud's initial mass-to-magnetic-flux ratio (normalized to the critical value for collapse), the dimensionless initial neutral-ion collision time, and also the relative external pressure exerted on a model cloud. Among our results, we find that nearly-critical model clouds have significantly larger characteristic instability lengthscales than do more distinctly sub- or supercritical models. Another result is that the effect of a greater external pressure is to reduce the critical lengthscale for instability. Numerical simulations showing the evolution of model clouds during the linear regime of evolution are also presented, and compared to the results of the dispersion analysis. They are found to be in agreement with the dispersion results, and confirm the dependence of the characteristic length and time scales on parameters such as the initial mass-to-flux ratio and relative external pressure.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures Accepted by Ap

    Construction of a quasiconserved quantity in the Henon-Heiles problem using a single set of variables

    The problem of finding the coefficients of a simple series expansion for a quasiconserved quantity K for the Henon-Heiles Hamiltonian H using a single set of variables is solved. In the past, this type of approach has been problematic because the solution to the equations determining the coefficients in the expansion is not unique. As a result, the existence of a consistent expression for K to all orders had not previously been established. We show how to deal with this arbitrariness in the expansion coefficients for K in a consistent way. Due to this arbitrariness, we find a class of expansions for K, in contrast to the single unique expansion for K generated by the normal-form approach of Gustavson [Astron. J. 71, 670 (1966)]. It may be possible to devise a criterion for deciding which one of our expansions is optimally convergent, although we do not deal with this question here. We proceed by introducing a single set of dynamic variables that have simple symmetry properties and that also diagonalize the problem of finding the coefficients of K. No canonical transformations are required. A straightforward constructive procedure is given for generating the power series to any order for quantities having the symmetry of the Hamiltonian that -are formally conserved. This leads to a very practical method for calculating a quasiconserved quantity in the Henon-Heiles problem. A comparison is made through several orders of the terms generated by this approach and those generated in the original Gustavson expansion in normal form

    RF performance of the GAVRT wideband Radio Telescope (EuCAP 2010)

    A wideband Radio Telescope was designed and built for use in the Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT) program. It uses an existing 34-meter antenna retrofitted with a tertiary offset mirror placed at the apex of the main reflector. It can be rotated to use two feeds that cover the 0.5 to 14 GHz band. The feed for 4.0 to 14.0 GHz is a cryogenically cooled commercially available open boundary quadridge horn from ETS-Lindgren. Coverage from 0.5 to 4.0 GHz is provided by an un-cooled scaled version of the same feed that uses a cooled LNA. The measured performance is greater than 40% over much of the band

    Perceived Susceptibility and Prevention Attitudes of African-American College Students’ toward Type 2 Diabetes

    Whereas type 2 diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the general United States, it is the fourth leading cause of death for African Americans. This health disparity remains a serious and costly public health issue. This study investigated the type 2 diabetes preventive behaviors and intentions among 130 African-American college students. Data collection for this cross-sectional study included administration of a 23-item survey that measured knowledge, attitudes, perceived susceptibility, and social norms. We found that only 19% of the respondents perceived themselves at risk for developing diabetes. Students who had been told by a health professional that they were pre-diabetic or diabetic were more likely to perceive an increased risk for developing diabetes than their counterparts. Despite low risk perception in this group, 95% reported a favorable attitude towards preventing diabetes. These results underscore the need to enhance college students’ knowledge and understanding of type 2 diabetes risk, while capitalizing on positive student attitudes toward prevention.     From Stars to Super-planets: the Low-Mass IMF in the Young Cluster IC348

    We investigate the low-mass population of the young cluster IC348 down to the deuterium-burning limit, a fiducial boundary between brown dwarf and planetary mass objects, using a new and innovative method for the spectral classification of late-type objects. Using photometric indices, constructed from HST/NICMOS narrow-band imaging, that measure the strength of the 1.9 micron water band, we determine the spectral type and reddening for every M-type star in the field, thereby separating cluster members from the interloper population. Due to the efficiency of our spectral classification technique, our study is complete from approx 0.7 Msun to 0.015 Msun. The mass function derived for the cluster in this interval, dN/dlogM \propto M^{0.5}, is similar to that obtained for the Pleiades, but appears significantly more abundant in brown dwarfs than the mass function for companions to nearby sun-like stars. This provides compelling observational evidence for different formation and evolutionary histories for substellar objects formed in isolation vs. as companions. Because our determination of the IMF is complete to very low masses, we can place interesting constraints on the role of physical processes such as fragmentation in the star and planet formation process and the fraction of dark matter in the Galactic halo that resides in substellar objects.Comment: 37 pages, 16 figs, 6 tables (Table 4 is a separate LaTeX file) Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal (Oct 1, 2000 issue

    Design and Performance of a Wideband Radio Telescope

    The Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT) is an outreach project, a partnership involving NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the Lewis Center for Educational Research (LCER), and the Apple Valley Unified School District near the NASA Goldstone deep space communication complex. This educational program currently uses a 34-meter antenna, DSS12, at Goldstone for classroom radio astronomy observations via the Internet. The current program utilizes DSS12 in two narrow frequency bands around S-band (2.3 GHz) and X-band (8.45 GHz), and is used by a training program involving a large number of secondary school teachers and their classrooms. To expand the program, a joint JPL/LCER project was started in mid-2006 to retrofit an additional existing 34-meter beam-waveguide antenna, DSS28, with wideband feeds and receivers to cover the 0.5-to- 14-GHz frequency bands. The DSS28 antenna has a 34-meter diameter main reflector, a 2.54-meter subreflector, and a set of beam waveguide mirrors surrounded by a 2.43-meter tube. The antenna was designed for high power and a narrow frequency band around 7.2 GHz. The performance at the low end of the frequency band desired for the educational program would be extremely poor if the beam waveguide system was used as part of the feed system. Consequently, the 34-meter antenna was retrofitted with a tertiary offset mirror placed at the vertex of the main reflector. The tertiary mirror can be rotated to use two wideband feeds that cover the 0.5-to-14-GHz band. The earlier designs for both GAVRT and the DSN only used narrow band feeds and consequently, only covered a small part of the S- and X-band frequencies. By using both a wideband feed and wideband amplifiers, the entire band from 0.5 to 14 GHz is covered, expanding significantly the science activities that can be studied using this system

    The natural history of interferon-α induced thyroiditis in chronic hepatitis c patients: a long term study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Autoimmune thyroid disease is a common complication of patients with chronic hepatitis C undergoing combination pegylated interferon-α and ribavirin treatment. A small proportion develops interferon-induced thyroiditis of which the long term natural history is unknown and how it compares with de novo thyroiditis. The aim of the study is to determine the natural history of thyroid disease including antibody profile in this particular setting 36 months from the completion of therapy.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cohort of 18 hepatitis C patients (mean age 45 ± 8 years (standard deviation)) who developed exclusively thyroiditis in this setting was followed every 12 months after the completion of therapy for 36 months. Investigations included thyrotropin, free tetra-iodothyronine, free tri-iodothyronine levels and thyroid autoantibodies.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>None of the patients developed any long term thyroid disease. Two patients had a prolonged hypothyroid phase of the thyroiditis early after the completion of treatment but recovered fully. The remaining 16 patients remained euthyroid. Similarly, thyroid autoantibodies all declined and returned to reference range.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The long term natural history in this small series of interferon induced thyroiditis was benign. If a larger series confirms a similar outcome then there is no long term residual effect on thyroid function and follow-up testing would not be warranted.</p

    Low Mass Stars and Substellar Objects in the NGC 1333 Molecular Cloud

    We present the results of near-infrared imaging and low-resolution near- infrared spectroscopy of low mass objects in the NGC 1333 molecular cloud. A JHK survey of an 11.4' x 11.7' area of the northern cluster was conducted to a sensitivity of K < 16 mag. Using near-infrared magnitudes and colors from this and previously published surveys, twenty-five brown dwarf candidates were selected toward the high extinction cloud core. Spectra in the K band were obtained and comparisons of the depths of water vapor absorption bands in our candidate objects with a grid of dwarf,subgiant, and giant standards were made to derive spectral types. These data were then used to derive effective temperatures and stellar luminosities which, when combined with theoretical tracks and isochrones for pre-main sequence objects, resulted in estimates for their masses and ages. The models suggest a median age for the sample of < 1 Myr with substellar masses for at least 9 of the candidates including the x-ray flare source ASR 24. Surface gravities have been estimated for the brown dwarf candidates and, for a given spectral type,found to resemble more closely dwarfs than giants. Using the near-infrared imaging data and age estimates from the spectroscopic sample, an extinction-limited sample in the northern cluster was defined. Consistent with recent studies of other young clusters, this sample exhibits an accretion disk frequency of 0.75 +-0.20 and a mass spectrum slope across the hydrogen-burning limit of alpha < 1.6 where dN/dM ~ M^-(alpha).Comment: 22 postscript pages, 12 postscript figures, and 3 postscript tables.
