NOPHOTO?s collective photography project El último verano provides a fragmented, contradictory document to the deteriorating conditions of everyday life in times of crisis. In it, nine photographers turn their lenses toward portraits of downward mobility, precarity, and the growing phenomenon of emigration, as well as summer pleasures and moments of escape. Drawing from Lauren Berlant?s writings on the impasse in neoliberalism, I read how la crisis is sensed first in these photos in the subject?s affective attachments to perceptible losses and then in strategies for survival developed amid an ongoing crisis. Taking stock of the present at an impasse, I argue, is immersed in a strong sense of temporality for the present ungrounded by change?of nostalgia and return, of future projection, of escapist fantasy, of present anxieties for risk?and in the photographs, indexes for viewers other narratives on the crisis, in plural ways, that piece together a collective, shared circumstance in times of austerity. Key Words: documentary photography, financial, crisis, neoliberalism, temporality, affect, subjectivity

This study, conducted by the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE), reports on the impact of the America\u27s Choice school design on student standardized test performance in Duval County, Florida. We present the results of the first two years of the impact of America\u27s Choice in Duval County in elementary and middle schools in writing, reading, and mathematics using test data from 1999-2001. To detect the effects of America\u27s Choice on student learning, we compared the gains in performance of students in America\u27s Choice schools to those of students in other schools in the district. We employed two statistical techniques in order to make the comparisons as fair as possible. First, we controlled for a variety of student and school demographic characteristics, including prior student achievement, in order to isolate the influences of America\u27s Choice on student learning during a one-to-two year period. Second, we used a statistical method called multi-level modeling that allowed us to appropriately model the fact that students are nested within schools and to take into account the fact that we were looking for the effect of a school-level reform effort using individual-level student data

Balys Dvarionas: A Brief History, Analysis of His Concerto For Horn and Orchestra, and the First Recording of the Concerto

This document will concentrate on the currently unpublished and incomplete manuscript of the orchestral version of Concerto for Horn and Orchestra [Koncertas valtornei su orkestru], composed by Lithuanian composer Balys Dvarionas (1904–1972). Despite his popularity and importance in Lithuania, Dvarionas’s music is not as well known throughout the rest of the world. This document aims to redress this situation. The document provides a more thorough English-language biography about the composer than those that currently exist in print. It discusses various aspects of the concerto, including its place in Dvarionis’s output and a brief analysis, a core aspect of which is the identification of Lithuanian folk tunes used by Dvarionas (one of the composer’s signature methods). I also provide a pedagogical overview of the work’s difficulties. In addition, a recording of the concerto with orchestra, made in the UNLV recording studio, accompanies this DMA document. This is the first recording of this piece
