Early Admission at Selective Colleges
Early admissions is widely used by selective colleges and universities. We identify some basic facts about early admissions policies, including the admissions advantage enjoyed by early applicants and patterns in application behavior, and propose a game theoretic model that matches these facts. The key feature of the model is that colleges want to admit students who are enthusiastic about attending, and early admissions programs give students an opportunity to signal this enthusiasm.Game Theory, Early Admission, Education

Safety coaching: a literature review of coaching in high hazard industries
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to critically review the research literature on safety coaching, with a
particularly focus towards work in safety critical environments such as oil and gas, manufacturing and driving.
Design/methodology/approach – A literature review was undertaken of existing research, specifically
in high-hazard industries, to assess whether safety coaching could be applied in the offshore oil and gas
industry.
Findings – The paper suggests that coaching may offer some potential in helping support learning,
behaviour change and is consistent with feedback and development approaches used in behavioural-based
safety.
Research limitations/implications – Further research would be needed to test the value of coaching
to this new environment.
Practical implications – The paper informs practice on the development of coach training for safety
coaching offshore.
Originality/value – The paper offers a new understanding of the potential of safety coaching in a new area
of practice

Taking ownership of safety. What are the active ingredients of safety coaching and how do they impact safety outcomes in critical offshore working environments?
Safety coaching interventions have become a common feature in the safety critical offshore working environments of the North Sea. Whilst the beneficial impact of coaching as an organizational tool has been evidenced, there remains a question specifically over the use of safety coaching and its impact on behavioural change and producing safe working practices. A series of 24 semi-structured interviews were conducted with three groups of experts in the offshore industry: safety coaches, offshore managers and HSE directors. Using a thematic analysis approach, several significant themes were identified across the three expert groups including connecting with and creating safety ownership in the individual, personal significance and humanisation, ingraining safety and assessing and measuring a safety coach's competence. Results suggest clear utility of safety coaching when applied by safety coaches with appropriate coach training and understanding of safety issues in an offshore environment. The current work has found that the use of safety coaching in the safety critical offshore oil and gas industry is a powerful tool in managing and promoting a culture of safety and care
Who gets the gametes? An argument for a points system for fertility patients
This paper argues that the convention of allocating donated gametes on a “first come, first served” basis should be replaced with an allocation sys-tem that takes into account more morally relevant criteria than waiting time. This conclusion was developed using an empirical bioethics method-ology, which involved a study of the views of eighteen staff members from seven UK fertility clinics, and twenty academics, policy-makers, representa-tives of patient groups, and other relevant professionals, on the allocation of donated sperm and eggs. Against these views, we consider some nu-anced ways of including criteria in a points allocation system. We argue that such a system is more ethically robust than “first come, first served”, but we acknowledge that our results suggest that a points system will meet with resistance from those working in the field. We conclude that criteria such as a patient’s age, potentially damaging substance use, and parental status should be used to allocate points and determine which patients re-ceive treatment and in what order. These and other factors should be ap-plied according to how they bear on considerations like child welfare, pa-tient welfare, and the effectiveness of the proposed treatment

Targeting chemotherapeutic resistance in breast cancer
The Bcl-2 family of proteins regulate cell survival and are targets for cancer therapy. This protein family has also been implicated in chemotherapeutic resistance, the cause of approximately 90% of treatment failure in advanced cancer. We analyzed the expression and the role of the Bcl-2 proteins in chemotherapy resistant breast cancer cells. Further, we investigated the role of a new class of molecules developed in our laboratory that target Bcl-2. These compounds effectively induced death in chemotherapy resistant breast cancer cells and reduced their ability to form colonies. Therefore, our studies have identified a group of compounds that have the potential to treat chemotherapy resistant breast cancer

This essay offers the results obtained on a research in which social values and gender issues were analyzed through cars commercials by students of Elementary Education. In the mentioned study, conducted in two schools of Cordoba and Jaen, a total of 289 students from the fifth and six grade of Elementary Education took part in it. The main focus is to explore the male and female representations on the automotive commercials, an aspect that should show whether or not both genders are portrayed on the same way or using specific values
