    An Assessment of Commercial Motorcycle Transport Operators (CMTO) In Zaria Metropolis, Kaduna State

    The presence and activities of Commercial Motorcycle Transport Operators (CMTO) is ubiquitous in Zaria metropolis and its growing effects fully felt. Consequently there is the need of a research focusing on its assessment. The aim of this study is to assess the activities of CMTO with a view to positively repositioning and regulating its activities for effectiveness. Accordingly, the researchers utilized primary data via the use of 250questionnaires; collecting data on several research parameters relevant to this study. The study reveals that CMTO activities are indispensable in Zaria metropolis due to their significance in facilitating transportation activities in the study area. The study also shows that the number of people joining the business is on the increase and it is a readilyavailable means of employment in the study area. Majority of the operators have experienced one form of accident or the other and expressed the view that the job is highly risky in nature due to fatal accidents that have led many operators to their premature graves. The study also highlighted some of the problems confronting the CMTOactivities and proffered relevant workable solutions for ameliorating the problems

    ExoMol line lists – XLVII. Rovibronic spectrum of aluminium monochloride (AlCl)

    A line list for two isotopologues of aluminium monochloride, AlCl35 and AlCl37 are presented covering the wavelength range <0.2 ÎŒm, J up to 400 and applicable for temperatures up to 5000 K. The line lists are built using an empirical spectroscopic model consisting of potential energy curves, spin-orbit coupling curves, electronic angular momentum curves and Born-Oppenheimer Breakdown correction curves combined with ab initio dipole moments and covers the four lowest electronic states, X 1ÎŁ+, A 1Π, a 3Π and b 3ÎŁ+. Considerable problems with the assignments of some the laboratory rovibronic spectra are identified. Treatment of the states lying in the continuum is discussed.     ExoMol molecular line lists – XLIII. Rovibronic transitions corresponding to the close-lying X 2Π and A 2Σ+ states of NaO

    The sodium monoxide radical (NaO) is observed in night-glow in the Earth’s mesosphere and likely has astronomical importance. This study concerns the optical transitions within the ground X 2Π state and to the very low-lying (Te ≈ 2000 cm−1) excited A 2ÎŁ+ state. A line list consisting of rovibronic term values, allowed electric dipole transitions, Einstein coefficients, and partition functions for varying temperature are produced using a variational solution of the coupled-channel Schrödinger equations using the program duo. multi-reference configuration interaction (MRCI) ab initio calculations characterizing the potential energy curves of the two states, spin-orbit and L-uncoupling non-adiabatic matrix elements, as well as permanent and transition dipole moments were integral in the formation of the final deperturbation model. Ab initio potential energy curves are represented in the analytical Extended Morse Oscillator form and refined, along with the spin-orbit and L-uncoupling functions, by least-squares fitting to the available spectroscopic data. The input experimental data consisted of pure rotational transitions within the fine-structure components of the X 2Π state for v″ ∈ [0, 3] vibrational levels as well as the rovibronic A 2ÎŁ+(vâ€Č = 0) ← X 2Π(v″ = 0) transitions, both with limited coverage over rotational excitation. The lack of data detailing the vibrational structure of the X and A states points to the need for further experimental study of higher excited levels, which would provide a more robust spectroscopic model.     Segregation analysis identifies specific alpha-defensin (DEFA1A3) SNP–CNV haplotypes in predisposition to IgA nephropathy

    BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy is a disorder of the immune system affecting kidney function, and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have defined numerous loci with associated variation, all implicating components of innate or adaptive immunity. Among these, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a region including the multiallelic copy number variation (CNV) of DEFA1A3 are associated with IgA nephropathy in both European and Asian populations. At present, the precise factors underlying the observed associations at DEFA1A3 have not been defined, although the key alleles differ between Asian and European populations, and multiple independent factors may be involved even within a single population. METHODS: In this study, we measured DEFA1A3 copy number in UK family trios with an offspring affected by IgA nephropathy, used the population distributions of joint SNP-CNV haplotypes to infer the likely segregation in trios, and applied transmission disequilibrium tests (TDT) to examine joint SNP-CNV haplotypes for over- or undertransmission into affected offspring from heterozygous parents. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We observed overtransmission of 3-copy class 2 haplotypes (raw p = 0.029) and some evidence for under-transmission of 3-copy class 1 haplotypes (raw p = 0.051), although these apparent effects were not statistically significant after correction for testing of multiple haplotypes

    National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank: A standard based biospecimen and clinical data resource to enhance translational research

    Background: Advances in translational research have led to the need for well characterized biospecimens for research. The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank is an initiative which collects annotated datasets relevant to human mesothelioma to develop an enterprising biospecimen resource to fulfill researchers' need. Methods: The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank architecture is based on three major components: (a) common data elements (based on College of American Pathologists protocol and National North American Association of Central Cancer Registries standards), (b) clinical and epidemiologic data annotation, and (c) data query tools. These tools work interoperably to standardize the entire process of annotation. The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank tool is based upon the caTISSUE Clinical Annotation Engine, developed by the University of Pittsburgh in cooperation with the Cancer Biomedical Informatics Gridℱ (caBIGℱ, see http://cabig.nci.nih.gov). This application provides a web-based system for annotating, importing and searching mesothelioma cases. The underlying information model is constructed utilizing Unified Modeling Language class diagrams, hierarchical relationships and Enterprise Architect software. Result: The database provides researchers real-time access to richly annotated specimens and integral information related to mesothelioma. The data disclosed is tightly regulated depending upon users' authorization and depending on the participating institute that is amenable to the local Institutional Review Board and regulation committee reviews. Conclusion: The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank currently has over 600 annotated cases available for researchers that include paraffin embedded tissues, tissue microarrays, serum and genomic DNA. The National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank is a virtual biospecimen registry with robust translational biomedical informatics support to facilitate basic science, clinical, and translational research. Furthermore, it protects patient privacy by disclosing only de-identified datasets to assure that biospecimens can be made accessible to researchers. © 2008 Amin et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd

    MARVEL analysis of high-resolution rovibrational spectra of 16O12C18O

    Empirical rovibrational energy levels are presented for the third most abundant, asymmetric carbon dioxide isotopologue, 16O12C18O, based on a compiled dataset of experimental rovibrational transitions collected from the literature. The 52 literature sources utilized provide 19,438 measured lines with unique assignments in the wavenumber range of 2-12,676 cm-1. The MARVEL (Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels) protocol, which is built upon the theory of spectroscopic networks, validates the great majority of these transitions and outputs 8786 empirical rovibrational energy levels with an uncertainty estimation based on the experimental uncertainties of the transitions. Issues found in the literature data, such as misassignment of quantum numbers, typographical errors, and misidentifications, are fixed before including them in the final MARVEL dataset and analysis. Comparison of the empirical energy-level data of this study with those in the line lists CDSD-2019 and Ames-2021 shows good overall agreement, significantly better for CDSD-2019; some issues raised by these comparisons are discussed

    Does self-monitoring reduce blood pressure? Meta-analysis with meta-regression of randomized controlled trials

    Introduction. Self-monitoring of blood pressure (BP) is an increasingly common part of hypertension management. The objectives of this systematic review were to evaluate the systolic and diastolic BP reduction, and achievement of target BP, associated with self-monitoring. Methods. MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane database of systematic reviews, database of abstracts of clinical effectiveness, the health technology assessment database, the NHS economic evaluation database, and the TRIP database were searched for studies where the intervention included self-monitoring of BP and the outcome was change in office/ambulatory BP or proportion with controlled BP. Two reviewers independently extracted data. Meta-analysis using a random effects model was combined with meta-regression to investigate heterogeneity in effect sizes. Results. A total of 25 eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (27 comparisons) were identified. Office systolic BP (20 RCTs, 21 comparisons, 5,898 patients) and diastolic BP (23 RCTs, 25 comparisons, 6,038 patients) were significantly reduced in those who self-monitored compared to usual care (weighted mean difference (WMD) systolic −3.82 mmHg (95% confidence interval −5.61 to −2.03), diastolic −1.45 mmHg (−1.95 to −0.94)). Self-monitoring increased the chance of meeting office BP targets (12 RCTs, 13 comparisons, 2,260 patients, relative risk = 1.09 (1.02 to 1.16)). There was significant heterogeneity between studies for all three comparisons, which could be partially accounted for by the use of additional co-interventions. Conclusion. Self-monitoring reduces blood pressure by a small but significant amount. Meta-regression could only account for part of the observed heterogeneity

    Experimental observation of topological Fermi arcs in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

    Weyl semimetal is a new quantum state of matter [1-12] hosting the condensed matter physics counterpart of relativisticWeyl fermion [13] originally introduced in high energy physics. The Weyl semimetal realized in the TaAs class features multiple Fermi arcs arising from topological surface states [10, 11, 14-16] and exhibits novel quantum phenomena, e.g., chiral anomaly induced negative mag-netoresistance [17-19] and possibly emergent supersymmetry [20]. Recently it was proposed theoretically that a new type (type-II) of Weyl fermion [21], which does not have counterpart in high energy physics due to the breaking of Lorentz invariance, can emerge as topologically-protected touching between electron and hole pockets. Here, we report direct spectroscopic evidence of topological Fermi arcs in the predicted type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2 [22-24]. The topological surface states are confirmed by directly observing the surface states using bulk-and surface-sensitive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and the quasi-particle interference (QPI) pattern between the two putative Fermi arcs in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Our work establishes MoTe2 as the first experimental realization of type-II Weyl semimetal, and opens up new opportunities for probing novel phenomena such as exotic magneto-transport [21] in type-II Weyl semimetals.Comment: submitted on 01/29/2016.
