Bound states and E_8 symmetry effects in perturbed quantum Ising chains
In a recent experiment on CoNb_2O_6, Coldea et al. [Science 327, 177 (2010)]
found for the first time experimental evidence of the exceptional Lie algebra
E_8. The emergence of this symmetry was theoretically predicted long ago for
the transverse quantum Ising chain in the presence of a weak longitudinal
field. We consider an accurate microscopic model of CoNb_2O_6 incorporating
additional couplings and calculate numerically the dynamical structure function
using a recently developed matrix-product-state method. The excitation spectra
show bound states characteristic of the weakly broken E_8 symmetry. We compare
the observed bound state signatures in this model to those found in the
transverse Ising chain in a longitudinal field and to experimental data.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Dewetting of thin polymer films: Influence of interface evolution
The dewetting dynamics of ultrathin polymer films, e.g. in the model system
of polystyrene on a polydimethylsiloxane-covered substrate, exhibits
interesting behavior like a fast decay of the dewetting velocity and a maximum
in the width of the built-up rim in the course of time. These features have
been recently ascribed to the relaxation of residual stresses in the film that
stem from the nonequilibrium preparation of the samples. Recent experiments by
Coppee et al. on PS with low molecular weight, where such stresses could not be
evidenced, showed however similar behavior. By scaling arguments and numerical
solution of a thin film viscoelastic model we show that the maximum in the
width of the rim can be caused by a temporal evolution of the friction
coefficient (or equivalently of the slip length), for which we discuss two
possible mechanisms. In addition, the maximum in the width is affected by the
sample age. As a consequence, knowing the temporal behavior of friction (or
slip length) in principle allows to measure the aging dynamics of a
polymer-polymer interface by simple dewetting experiments.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
Vectorial Ribaucour Transformations for the Lame Equations
The vectorial extension of the Ribaucour transformation for the Lame
equations of orthogonal conjugates nets in multidimensions is given. We show
that the composition of two vectorial Ribaucour transformations with
appropriate transformation data is again a vectorial Ribaucour transformation,
from which it follows the permutability of the vectorial Ribaucour
transformations. Finally, as an example we apply the vectorial Ribaucour

Discovery of Interstellar Hydrogen Fluoride
We report the first detection of interstellar hydrogen fluoride. Using the
Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) of the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), we
have detected the 121.6973 micron J = 2 - 1 line of HF in absorption toward the
far-infrared continuum source Sagittarius B2. The detection is statistically
significant at the 13 sigma level. On the basis of our model for the excitation
of HF in Sgr B2, the observed line equivalent width of 1.0 nm implies a
hydrogen fluoride abundance of 3E-10 relative to H2. If the elemental abundance
of fluorine in Sgr B2 is the same as that in the solar system, then HF accounts
for ~ 2% of the total number of fluorine nuclei. We expect hydrogen fluoride to
be the dominant reservoir of gas-phase fluorine in Sgr B2, because it is formed
rapidly in exothermic reactions of atomic fluorine with either water or
molecular hydrogen; thus the measured HF abundance suggests a substantial
depletion of fluorine onto dust grains. Similar conclusions regarding depletion
have previously been reached for the case of chlorine in dense interstellar
clouds. We also find evidence at a lower level of statistical significance (~ 5
sigma) for an emission feature at the expected position of the 4(3,2)-4(2,3)
121.7219 micron line of water. The emission line equivalent width of 0.5 nm for
the water feature is consistent with the water abundance of 5E-6 relative to H2
that has been inferred previously from observations of the hot core of Sgr B2.Comment: 11 pages (AASTeX using aaspp4.sty) plus 2 figures; to appear in ApJ

Detection of a new, low-brightness supernova remnant possibly associated with EGRET sources
We report on the discovery of a shell-type supernova remnant in the southern
sky. It is a large (8*8), low-brightness source with a nonthermal radio
spectrum, which requires background filtering to isolate it from the diffuse
background emission of the Galaxy. Three 3EG gamma-ray sources are spatially
correlated with the radio structure. We have made 21-cm line observations of
the region and found that two of these sources are coincident with HI clouds.
We propose that the gamma-ray emission is the result of hadronic interactions
between high-energy protons locally accelerated at the remnant shock front and
atomic nuclei in the ambient clouds.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
A two-way photonic interface for linking Sr+ transition at 422 nm to the telecommunications C-band
We report a single-stage bi-directional interface capable of linking Sr+
trapped ion qubits in a long-distance quantum network. Our interface converts
photons between the Sr+ emission wavelength at 422 nm and the telecoms C-band
to enable low-loss transmission over optical fiber. We have achieved both up-
and down-conversion at the single photon level with efficiencies of 9.4% and
1.1% respectively. Furthermore we demonstrate noise levels that are low enough
to allow for genuine quantum operation in the future.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
The role of familial conflict in home range settlement and fitness of a solitary mammal
Familial conflict, including parent–offspring conflict (POC) and sibling competition (SC), occurs when an individual maximizes its access to a limiting resource at the expense of a related individual. The role of familial conflict for competition over space as a limited resource remains relatively unexplored. In this study, we examined how familial conflict affects natal dispersal and settlement decisions of a solitary mammal, the brown bear, Ursus arctos, and tested whether these settlement patterns covary with fitness. First, we tested whether the distance settled from the natal range was affected by aspects of POC (litter type: single versus multiple; mother's age; mother's living status) and SC (settled near versus far from the natal home range, body size). We then modelled how distance settled from the natal range influenced three measures of fitness: survival to reproduction, lifetime reproductive success and lifetime survival. In line with POC, we found that daughters settled twice as far from the natal range when their mother was alive than when she was dead. We found strong evidence for SC where in sibling pairs, the ‘near’ sister settled nearly three times closer to the natal range than her sibling. We found contradictory patterns in fitness outcomes based on settlement distance, such that females settling closer to the natal range had higher lifetime survival but were less likely to successfully wean at least one offspring. Despite survival advantages gained by settling closer to the natal range, there was no evidence that settlement distance influenced lifetime reproductive success. Fitness outcomes in this population may be influenced more by factors related to annual hunting than by familial conflict or proximity to the natal range
Simultaneous minimum-uncertainty measurement of discrete-valued complementary observables
We have made the first experimental demonstration of the simultaneous minimum
uncertainty product between two complementary observables for a two-state
system (a qubit). A partially entangled two-photon state was used to perform
such measurements. Each of the photons carries (partial) information of the
initial state thus leaving a room for measurements of two complementary

We classify the simplest rational elements in a twisted loop group, and prove
that dressing actions of them on proper indefinite affine spheres give the
classical Tzitz\'eica transformation and its dual. We also give the group point
of view of the Permutability Theorem, construct complex Tzitz\'eica
