    On Quasar Masses and Quasar Host Galaxies

    The mass of massive black holes in quasar cores can be deduced using the typical velocities of Hb-emitting clouds in the Broad Line Region (BLR) and the size of this region. However, this estimate depends on various assumptions and is susceptible to large systematic errors. The Hb-deduced black hole mass in a sample of 14 bright quasars is found here to correlate with the quasar host galaxy luminosity, as determined with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This correlation is similar to the black hole mass vs. bulge luminosity correlation found by Magorrian et al. in a sample of 32 nearby normal galaxies. The similarity of the two correlations is remarkable since the two samples involve apparently different types of objects and since the black hole mass estimates in quasars and in nearby galaxies are based on very different methods. This similarity provides a ``calibration'' of the Hb-deduced black hole mass estimate, suggesting it is accurate to +-0.5 on log scale. The similarity of the two correlations also suggests that quasars reside in otherwise normal galaxies, and that the luminosity of quasar hosts can be estimated to +-0.5 mag based on the quasar continuum luminosity and the Hb line width. Future imaging observations of additional broad-line active galaxies with the HST are required in order to explore the extent, slope, and scatter of the black hole mass vs. host bulge luminosity correlation in active galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, 7 pages, aas2pp4.st

    Geometric optics and instability for semi-classical Schrodinger equations

    We prove some instability phenomena for semi-classical (linear or) nonlinear Schrodinger equations. For some perturbations of the data, we show that for very small times, we can neglect the Laplacian, and the mechanism is the same as for the corresponding ordinary differential equation. Our approach allows smaller perturbations of the data, where the instability occurs for times such that the problem cannot be reduced to the study of an o.d.e.Comment: 22 pages. Corollary 1.7 adde

    Crystal Symmetry Lowering in Chiral Multiferroic Ba3_3TaFe3_3Si2_2O14_{14} observed by X-Ray Magnetic Scattering

    Chiral multiferroic langasites have attracted attention due to their doubly-chiral magnetic ground state within an enantiomorphic crystal. We report on a detailed resonant soft X-ray diffraction study of the multiferroic Ba3_3TaFe3_3Si2_2O14_{14} at the Fe L2,3L_{2,3} and oxygen KK edges. Below TNT_N (≈27K\approx27K) we observe the satellite reflections (0,0,τ)(0,0,\tau), (0,0,2τ)(0,0,2\tau), (0,0,3τ)(0,0,3\tau) and (0,0,1−3τ)(0,0,1-3\tau) where τ≈0.140±0.001\tau \approx 0.140 \pm 0.001. The dependence of the scattering intensity on X-ray polarization and azimuthal angle indicate that the odd harmonics are dominated by the out-of-plane (c^\mathbf{\hat{c}}-axis) magnetic dipole while the (0,0,2τ)(0,0,2\tau) originates from the electron density distortions accompanying magnetic order. We observe dissimilar energy dependences of the diffraction intensity of the purely magnetic odd-harmonic satellites at the Fe L3L_3 edge. Utilizing first-principles calculations, we show that this is a consequence of the loss of threefold crystal symmetry in the multiferroic phase

    High-level feature detection from video in TRECVid: a 5-year retrospective of achievements

    Successful and effective content-based access to digital video requires fast, accurate and scalable methods to determine the video content automatically. A variety of contemporary approaches to this rely on text taken from speech within the video, or on matching one video frame against others using low-level characteristics like colour, texture, or shapes, or on determining and matching objects appearing within the video. Possibly the most important technique, however, is one which determines the presence or absence of a high-level or semantic feature, within a video clip or shot. By utilizing dozens, hundreds or even thousands of such semantic features we can support many kinds of content-based video navigation. Critically however, this depends on being able to determine whether each feature is or is not present in a video clip. The last 5 years have seen much progress in the development of techniques to determine the presence of semantic features within video. This progress can be tracked in the annual TRECVid benchmarking activity where dozens of research groups measure the effectiveness of their techniques on common data and using an open, metrics-based approach. In this chapter we summarise the work done on the TRECVid high-level feature task, showing the progress made year-on-year. This provides a fairly comprehensive statement on where the state-of-the-art is regarding this important task, not just for one research group or for one approach, but across the spectrum. We then use this past and on-going work as a basis for highlighting the trends that are emerging in this area, and the questions which remain to be addressed before we can achieve large-scale, fast and reliable high-level feature detection on video

    A striking correspondence between the dynamics generated by the vector fields and by the scalar parabolic equations

    The purpose of this paper is to enhance a correspondence between the dynamics of the differential equations y˙(t)=g(y(t))\dot y(t)=g(y(t)) on Rd\mathbb{R}^d and those of the parabolic equations u˙=Δu+f(x,u,∇u)\dot u=\Delta u +f(x,u,\nabla u) on a bounded domain Ω\Omega. We give details on the similarities of these dynamics in the cases d=1d=1, d=2d=2 and d≄3d\geq 3 and in the corresponding cases Ω=(0,1)\Omega=(0,1), Ω=T1\Omega=\mathbb{T}^1 and dim(Ω\Omega)≄2\geq 2 respectively. In addition to the beauty of such a correspondence, this could serve as a guideline for future research on the dynamics of parabolic equations

    All normal dispersion nonlinear fibre supercontinuum source characterization and application in hyperspectral stimulated Raman scattering microscopy

    Hyperspectral stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy is a powerful label-free, chemical-specific technique for biomedical and mineralogical imaging. Usually, broad and rapid spectral scanning across Raman bands is required for species identification. In many implementations, however, the Raman spectral scan speed is limited by the need to tune source laser wavelengths. Alternatively, a broadband supercontinuum source can be considered. In SRS microscopy, however, source noise is critically important, precluding many spectral broadening schemes. Here we show that a supercontinuum light source based on all normal dispersion (ANDi) fibres provides a stable broadband output with very low incremental source noise. We characterized the noise power spectral density of the ANDi fibre output and demonstrated its use in hyperspectral SRS microscopy applications. This confirms the viability and ease of implementation of ANDi fibre sources tier broadband SRS imaging.     Introduction – objectifs La rĂ©sistance Ă  la mĂ©ticilline du Staphylococcus aureus (SA) ne cesse de diminuer en France. Nous avons Ă©valuĂ© la prescription des antibiothĂ©rapies probabilistes dans les bactĂ©riĂ©mies Ă  SA et leur impact clinique. MatĂ©riels et mĂ©thodes Il s’agit d’une Ă©tude rĂ©trospective incluant les bactĂ©riĂ©mies Ă  Staphylococcus aureus sur le CHU d’Angers entre novembre 2012 et septembre 2013 avec recueil de l’antibiothĂ©rapie prescrite au rendu « cocci gram (CG)+ », Ă  J5, hospitalisation depuis plus de 5 jours ou dans les six derniers mois, signes de gravitĂ© clinique, mortalitĂ© Ă  J5. RĂ©sultats Nous avons inclus 146 Ă©pisodes de bactĂ©riĂ©mies. A l’annonce de CG+, 10 patients Ă©taient dĂ©cĂ©dĂ©s, 38,2 % ont reçu un anti-SARM (n = 52), 54,4 % un anti-SASM (n = 74), 7,4 % aucun antibiotique (n = 10). Parmi les bactĂ©riĂ©mies Ă  SARM (n = 23), 60,9 % (n = 14) ont reçu une antibiothĂ©rapie initiale Ă  visĂ©e SARM contre 36,3 % (n = 41) pour les bactĂ©riĂ©mies Ă  SASM (n = 113) (OR = 2,71, p = 0,03). Cette adaptation semble influencĂ©e par une hospitalisation rĂ©cente (OR = 1,82 ; p = 0,33) et la prĂ©sence de signes de gravitĂ© (OR = 1,87, p = 0,23). Dans 21,4 % (n = 6) des bactĂ©riĂ©mies Ă  SASM, l’antibiothĂ©rapie anti-SARM n’a pas Ă©tĂ© dĂ©secaladĂ©e. La mortalitĂ© Ă  J5 est 13 %. L’absence d’antibiothĂ©rapie dans les 24 premiĂšres heures (OR = 2,97 ; p = 0,046) et une prescription de C3G (OR = 5,2, p = 0,05) en monothĂ©rapie augmentent le risque de dĂ©cĂšs Ă  J5. Conclusion L’antibiothĂ©rapie initale semble adaptĂ©e Ă  l’histoire et la prĂ©sentation des patients. L’initiation sans dĂ©lai, la visĂ©e staphylococcique et la dĂ©sescalade sont les Ă©lĂ©ments importants du traitement

    Rydberg atoms in hollow-core photonic crystal fibres.

    The exceptionally large polarizability of highly excited Rydberg atoms-six orders of magnitude higher than ground-state atoms--makes them of great interest in fields such as quantum optics, quantum computing, quantum simulation and metrology. However, if they are to be used routinely in applications, a major requirement is their integration into technically feasible, miniaturized devices. Here we show that a Rydberg medium based on room temperature caesium vapour can be confined in broadband-guiding kagome-style hollow-core photonic crystal fibres. Three-photon spectroscopy performed on a caesium-filled fibre detects Rydberg states up to a principal quantum number of n=40. Besides small energy-level shifts we observe narrow lines confirming the coherence of the Rydberg excitation. Using different Rydberg states and core diameters we study the influence of confinement within the fibre core after different exposure times. Understanding these effects is essential for the successful future development of novel applications based on integrated room temperature Rydberg systems

    Probing the Ionizing Continuum of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies. I.Observational Results

    We present optical spectra and emission-line ratios of 12 Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies that we observed to study the ionizing EUV continuum. A common feature in the EUV continuum of active galactic nuclei is the big blue bump (BBB), generally associated with thermal accretion disk emission. While Galactic absorption prevents direct access to the EUV range, it can be mapped by measuring the strength of a variety of forbidden optical emission lines that respond to different EUV continuum regions. We find that narrow emission-line ratios involving [OII]3727, Hbeta, [OIII]5007, [OI]6300, Halpha,[NII]6583, and [SII]6716,6731 indicate no significant difference between NLS1s and Broad-Line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies, which suggests that the spectral energy distributions of their ionizing EUV - soft X-ray continua are similar. The relative strength of important forbidden high ionization lines like [NeV]3426 compared to HeII4686 and the relative strength of [FeX]6374 appear to show the same range as in BLS1 galaxies. However, a trend of weaker F([OI]6300)/F(Halpha) emission-line ratios is indicated for NLS1s compared to BLS1s. To recover the broad emission-line profiles we used Gaussian components. This approach indicates that the broad Hbeta profile can be well described with a broad component (FWHM = 3275 +- 800 km/s) and an intermediate broad component (FWHM = 1200 +- 300 km/s). The width of the broad component is in the typical range of normal BLS1s. The emission-line flux that is associated with the broad component in these NLS1s amounts to at least 60% of the total flux. Thus it dominates the total line flux, similar to BLS1 galaxies.Comment: 34 pages, 9 figures. accepted for publication in the Astrophys.Journa
