Asbestos in Scotland

This paper outlines the asbestos hazard in Scotland and draws upon a systematic oral history project to analyze from the workers’ perspective the nature of exposure, the limitations of government regulatory initiatives, and the ramifications of contracting asbestos-related diseases for sufferers and their families. Current issues are investigated, stressing the agency of workers, trade unions, sympathetic local councils, and, especially, the victims’ pressure groups. The occupational and environmental health threats of asbestos in Scotland remain significant, although recent E.U.- and U.K.- based decisions to ban further use of asbestos together with active campaigning by local activist groups have helped to reduce them. Mesothelioma mortality rates remain high, due to historic exposures, and much work remains to be done to reduce the number and plight of asbestos-exposed workers. Feeding dairy cows

Dairy cows furnish a market for the feed produced on the farm and aid in utilizing labor to good advantage. The dairy enterprise must be fitted into the entire farming operation for the best results. On many Iowa farms it is possible to grow the entire dairy ration. Good pasture grass, silage, alfalfa hay, corn, oats and soybeans when fed in sufficient quantities and proper combinations will provide all the nutrients that are necessary. A substantial profit above market value may be realized by Using these feeds in the rations for good-producing dairy cows. Production records on each individual cow will show the difference in cows and the way they respond to different feeding practices. Those records can be used as guides to better feeding methods. But no one can be sure o f a cow ’s producing ability until she has had an opportunity to show it with good feeding and care. The milk scales and the Babcock test will put the blame for low production upon the feeder as well as upon the cow

The history of the 71st Infantry Division

Foreword V-E Day found combat elements of the 71st Infantry Division poised along the Enns River in the vicinity of Steyr, Austria. The Red Circlers were ready, if necessary, to start out again on the long and arduous drive which had originated 800 miles back in France 59 days earlier. Although the officers and men were happy the bloody European conflict had ended, there were no riotous V-E celebrations. War still was raging in the Pacific and the men of the 71st figured they had a good fighting outfit which would be needed in the bitter final struggle. The reaction to V-J Day was a little more joyous, but still restrained. Final victory found the 71st with an important security mission in Bavaria, and immediately concentrated many minds on the big question: When will I go home? It was in this confused post-war period of rapid redeployment and turnovers in personnel that this volume was prepared and published, in Augsburg, Germany, where the Division CP was located. Prepared by members of the Division\u27s public relations staff, with assistance from lower units and other staff sections, this book covers the history of the 71st from activation to final occupation days in Europe. The aim was to make it an interesting book, not only to Red Circlers and their families, but to almost anyone who might happen to pick it up and read it. Microbial Safety and Quality of Fresh Herbs from Los Angeles, Orange County, and Seattle Farmers’ Markets

BACKGROUND: Farmers\u27 markets have been growing in popularity in the United States, but the microbial quality and safety of the food sold at these markets is currently unknown. The purpose of this study was to assess the microbial safety and quality of fresh basil, parsley and cilantro sold at farmers\u27 markets in the Los Angeles, Orange County and greater Seattle areas. RESULTS: A total of 133 samples (52 basil, 41 cilantro and 40 parsley) were collected from 13 different farmers\u27 markets and tested for Salmonella and generic Escherichia coli. One sample (parsley) was confirmed positive for Salmonella and 24.1% of samples were positive for generic E. coli, with a range of 0.70-3.15 log CFU g(-1). Among the herbs tested, basil showed the highest percentage of samples with generic E. coli (26.9%), followed by cilantro (24.4%) and then parsley (20.0%). For 12% of samples, the levels of generic E. coli exceeded guidelines established by the Public Health Laboratory Service for microbiological quality of ready-to-eat foods. CONCLUSION: Overall, this study indicates the presence of Salmonella and generic E. coli in fresh herbs sold at farmers\u27 markets; however, additional studies are needed to determine the sources and extent of contamination

Virtual Biopsy in Soft Tissue Sarcoma. How Close Are We?

A shift in radiology to a data-driven specialty has been unlocked by synergistic developments in imaging biomarkers (IB) and computational science. This is advancing the capability to deliver "virtual biopsies" within oncology. The ability to non-invasively probe tumour biology both spatially and temporally would fulfil the potential of imaging to inform management of complex tumours; improving diagnostic accuracy, providing new insights into inter- and intra-tumoral heterogeneity and individualised treatment planning and monitoring. Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare tumours of mesenchymal origin with over 150 histological subtypes and notorious heterogeneity. The combination of inter- and intra-tumoural heterogeneity and the rarity of the disease remain major barriers to effective treatments. We provide an overview of the process of successful IB development, the key imaging and computational advancements in STS including quantitative magnetic resonance imaging, radiomics and artificial intelligence, and the studies to date that have explored the potential biological surrogates to imaging metrics. We discuss the promising future directions of IBs in STS and illustrate how the routine clinical implementation of a virtual biopsy has the potential to revolutionise the management of this group of complex cancers and improve clinical outcomes

The differences between the branded and generic medicines using solid dosage forms: In-vitro dissolution testing

AbstractIntroductionDissolution is the amount of substance that goes into solution per unit time under standardised conditions of liquid/solid interface, solvent composition and temperature. Dissolution is one of the most important tools to predict the in-vivo bioavailability and in some cases to determine bioequivalence and assure interchangeability.AimTo compare the differences in dissolution behaviour of solid dosage forms between innovators (reference products) and their generic counterparts (tested products).MethodsFour replicates for each batch of 37 tested medicines was carried out using A PT-DT70 dissolution tester from Pharma Test. A total of 13 branded medicines and 24 generic counterparts were obtained locally and internationally to detect any differences in their dissolution behaviour. They were tested according to the British Pharmacopeia, European Pharmacopeia and the US Pharmacopeia with the rate of dissolution determined by ultra-violet Spectrophotometery.ResultsMost tested medicines complied with the pharmacopoeial specifications and achieved 85% dissolution in 60min. However, some generic medicines showed significant differences in dissolution rate at 60 and 120min. Many generic medicines showed a slower dissolution rate than their branded counterparts such as the generic forms of omeprazole 20mg. Some showed an incomplete dissolution such as the generic form of nifedipine 10mg. Other generics showed faster dissolution rate than their branded counterpart such as the generic forms of meloxicam 15mg. Moreover, some generics from different batches of the same manufacturer showed significant differences in their dissolution rate such as the generic forms of meloxicam 7.5mg. Nevertheless, some generic medicines violated the EMA and the FDA guidelines for industry when they failed to achieve 85% dissolution at 60min, such as the generic form of diclofenac sodium 50mg.ConclusionMost medicines in this study complied with the pharmacopeial limits. However, some generics dissolved differently than their branded counterparts. This can clearly question the interchangeability between the branded and its generic counterpart or even among generics
