    Semi-Automated Nasal PAP Mask Sizing using Facial Photographs

    We present a semi-automated system for sizing nasal Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) masks based upon a neural network model that was trained with facial photographs of both PAP mask users and non-users. It demonstrated an accuracy of 72% in correctly sizing a mask and 96% accuracy sizing to within 1 mask size group.     Nanoscale resolution interrogation scheme for simultaneous static and dynamic fiber Bragg grating strain sensing

    A combined interrogation and signal processing technique which facilitates high-speed simultaneous static and dynamic strain demodulation of multiplexed ļ¬ber Bragg grating sensors is described. The scheme integrates passive, interferometric wavelength-demodulation and fast optical switching between wavelength division multiplexer channels with signal extraction via a software lock-in ampliļ¬er and fast Fourier transform. Static and dynamic strain measurements with noise ļ¬‚oors of 1 nanostrain and 10 nanostrain/sqrt(Hz), between 5 mHz and 2 kHz were obtained. An inverse analysis applied to a cantilever beam set up was used to characterise and verify strain measurements using ļ¬nite element modeling. By providing distributed measurements of both ultahigh-resolution static and dynamic strain, the proposed scheme will facilitate advanced structural health monitoring

    High-speed interferometric FBG interrogator with dynamic and absolute wavelength measurement capability

    A passive, interferometric wavelength demodulation technique has been extended to measure the absolute wavelengths of a multiplexed array of fiber Bragg grating sensors. The scheme retains its original strain resolution of 10 nĪµ/āˆš{Hz}. A proof-of-concept interrogation system was able to determine the absolute wavelength of Bragg peaks to within 20 pm (17 Ī¼Īµ). Static and dynamic Bragg grating strains were accurately demodulated in both absolute and relative wavelength measurement modes. This demonstration indicates that interferometric techniques are able to provide absolute, static and dynamic measurements of strain within a single platform

    An extended abstract: A heuristic repair method for constraint-satisfaction and scheduling problems

    The work described in this paper was inspired by a surprisingly effective neural network developed for scheduling astronomical observations on the Hubble Space Telescope. Our heuristic constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) method was distilled from an analysis of the network. In the process of carrying out the analysis, we discovered that the effectiveness of the network has little to do with its connectionist implementation. Furthermore, the ideas employed in the network can be implemented very efficiently within a symbolic CSP framework. The symbolic implementation is extremely simple. It also has the advantage that several different search strategies can be employed, although we have found that hill-climbing methods are particularly well-suited for the applications that we have investigated. We begin the paper with a brief review of the neural network. Following this, we describe our symbolic method for heuristic repair

    The min-conflicts heuristic: Experimental and theoretical results

    This paper describes a simple heuristic method for solving large-scale constraint satisfaction and scheduling problems. Given an initial assignment for the variables in a problem, the method operates by searching through the space of possible repairs. The search is guided by an ordering heuristic, the min-conflicts heuristic, that attempts to minimize the number of constraint violations after each step. We demonstrate empirically that the method performs orders of magnitude better than traditional backtracking techniques on certain standard problems. For example, the one million queens problem can be solved rapidly using our approach. We also describe practical scheduling applications where the method has been successfully applied. A theoretical analysis is presented to explain why the method works so well on certain types of problems and to predict when it is likely to be most effective

    Ocular Irrigating Solutions: A Comparison Between Balanced Salt Solution and L-410 (PO-EIS)

    The ability of two ocular irrigating solutions to reduce postoperative corneal edema after intracapsular cataract extraction was compared using ultrasonic pachymetry. All patients had anterior chamber intraocular lenses implanted. The solutions were balanced salt solution and solution L-410 (PO-EIS), an eye irrigation solution containing dextran 40 and bicarbonate. Corneas irrigated with either solution showed no significant difference in postoperative edema. The use of L-410 (as an alternative to balanced salt solution) may not be necessary in intracapsular cataract extraction
