Time Delay Induced Death in Coupled Limit Cycle Oscillators
We investigate the dynamical behaviour of two limit cycle oscillators that
interact with each other via time delayed coupling and find that time delay can
lead to amplitude death of the oscillators even if they have the same
frequency. We demonstrate that this novel regime of amplitude "death" also
exists for large collections of coupled identical oscillators and provide
quantitative measures of this death region in the parameter space of coupling
strength and time delay. Its implication for certain biological and physical

Synthesis, Structure, and Ferromagnetism of a New Oxygen Defect Pyrochlore System Lu2V2O_{7-x} (x = 0.40-0.65)
A new fcc oxygen defect pyrochlore structure system Lu2V2O_{7-x} with x =
0.40 to 0.65 was synthesized from the known fcc ferromagnetic semiconductor
pyrochlore compound Lu2V2O7 which can be written as Lu2V2O6O' with two
inequivalent oxygen sites O and O'. Rietveld x-ray diffraction refinements
showed significant Lu-V antisite disorder for x >= 0.5. The lattice parameter
versus x (including x = 0) shows a distinct maximum at x ~ 0.4. We propose that
these observations can be explained if the oxygen defects are on the O'
sublattice of the structure. The magnetic susceptibility versus temperature
exhibits Curie-Weiss behavior above 150 K for all x, with a Curie constant C
that increases with x as expected in an ionic model. However, the magnetization
measurements also show that the (ferromagnetic) Weiss temperature theta and the
ferromagnetic ordering temperature T_C both strongly decrease with increasing x
instead of increasing as expected from C(x). The T_C decreases from 73 K for x
= 0 to 21 K for x = 0.65. Furthermore, the saturation moment at a field of 5.5
T at 5 K is nearly independent of x, with the value expected for a fixed spin
1/2 per V. The latter three observations suggest that Lu2V2O_{7-x} may contain
localized spin 1/2 vanadium moments in a metallic background that is induced by
oxygen defect doping, instead of being a semiconductor as suggested by the C(x)

In the space shuttle, a cargo bay storage rack was required which was to be manufactured from a metal-plastic composite and bolted to a cargo structure. Following completion, utilization of the rack was disallowed due to tolerances, that is, the size differences between the outside bolt diameter and the inside hole diameter. In addition to the space shuttle problem there are other close tolerance requirements for bolts. Such environments often benefit from close tolerance bolting. Frequently such fabrication is not cost effective. Consequently there is a need for means of achieving close tolerances between bolts and bolt holes. Such means are provided. After compressing the elements together a strong rigid plastic, ceramic, or ceramic plastic fluid is forced into a channel extending through the bolt
Assessing contaminated sediments in the context of multiple stressors
Sediments have a major role in ecosystem functioning but can also act as physical or chemical stressors. Anthropogenic activities may change the chemical constituency of sediments and the rate, frequency, and extent of sediment transport, deposition, and resuspension. The importance of sediments as stressors will depend on site ecosystem attributes and the magnitude and preponderance of co-occurring stressors. Contaminants are usually of greater ecological consequence in human-modified, depositional environments, where other anthropogenic stressors often co-occur. Risk assessments and restoration strategies should better consider the role of chemical contamination in the context of multiple stressors. There have been numerous advances in the temporal and spatial characterization of stressor exposures and quantification of biological responses. Contaminated sediments causing biological impairment tend to be patchy, whereas more pervasive anthropogenic stressors, such as alterations to habitat and flow, physical disturbance, and nutrient addition, may drive large-scale ecosystem responses. A systematic assessment of relevant ecosystem attributes and reference conditions can assist in understanding the importance of sediments in the context of other stressors. Experimental manipulations then allow for the controlled study of dominant stressors and the establishment of causal links. This approach will result in more effective management of watersheds and waterways. Environ. Toxicol. Environmental impact of hydraulic escalator dredging on oyster communities
A study to assess the effects of hydraulic escalator dredging on an oyster community was initiated at the request of the Department of Natural Resources, Mary1and Tidewater Fisheries Administration. The purpose of the work was to reevaluate a study done by Manning (1957). A site in the Patuxent River north of Broome Island classified as oyster bottom was selected to conduct an in - situ intensive experiment using the Manning study as a framework for project design. Gamma-rays from binary system with energetic pulsar and Be star with aspherical wind: PSR B1259-63/SS2883
At least one massive binary system containing an energetic pulsar, PSR
B1259-63/SS2883, has been recently detected in the TeV gamma-rays by the HESS
telescopes. These gamma-rays are likely produced by particles accelerated in
the vicinity of the pulsar and/or at the pulsar wind shock, in comptonization
of soft radiation from the massive star. However, the process of gamma-ray
production in such systems can be quite complicated due to the anisotropy of
the radiation field, complex structure of the pulsar wind termination shock and
possible absorption of produced gamma-rays which might initiate leptonic
cascades. In this paper we consider in detail all these effects. We calculate
the gamma-ray light curves and spectra for different geometries of the binary
system PSR B1259-63/SS2883 and compare them with the TeV gamma-ray
observations. We conclude that the leptonic IC model, which takes into account
the complex structure of the pulsar wind shock due to the aspherical wind of
the massive star, can explain the details of the observed gamma-ray light
