Attosecond electron spectroscopy using a novel interferometric pump-probe technique
We present an interferometric pump-probe technique for the characterization
of attosecond electron wave packets (WPs) that uses a free WP as a reference to
measure a bound WP. We demonstrate our method by exciting helium atoms using an
attosecond pulse with a bandwidth centered near the ionization threshold, thus
creating both a bound and a free WP simultaneously. After a variable delay, the
bound WP is ionized by a few-cycle infrared laser precisely synchronized to the
original attosecond pulse. By measuring the delay-dependent photoelectron
spectrum we obtain an interferogram that contains both quantum beats as well as
multi-path interference. Analysis of the interferogram allows us to determine
the bound WP components with a spectral resolution much better than the inverse
of the attosecond pulse duration.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Identification of genes differentially expressed in association with acquired cisplatin resistance
The goal of this study was to identify genes whose mRNA levels are differentially expressed in human cells with acquired cisplatin (cDDP) resistance. Using the parental UMSCC10b head and neck carcinoma cell line and the 5.9-fold cDDP-resistant subline, UMSCC10b/Pt-S15, two suppressive subtraction hybridization (SSH) cDNA libraries were prepared. One library represented mRNAs whose levels were increased in the cDDP resistant variant (the UP library), the other one represented mRNAs whose levels were decreased in the resistant cells (the DOWN library). Arrays constructed with inserts recovered from these libraries were hybridized with SSH products to identify truly differentially expressed elements. A total of 51 cDNA fragments present in the UP library and 16 in the DOWN library met the criteria established for differential expression. The sequences of 87% of these cDNA fragments were identified in Genbank. Among the mRNAs in the UP library that were frequently isolated and that showed high levels of differential expression were cytochrome oxidase I, ribosomal protein 28S, elongation factor 1α, α-enolase, stathmin, and HSP70. Angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of two-color XUV-NIR ionization with polarization control
Electron emission caused by extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation in the presence of a strong near infrared (NIR) field leads to multiphoton interactions that depend on several parameters. Here, a comprehensive study of the influence of the angle between the polarization directions of the NIR and XUV fields on the two-color angle-resolved photoelectron spectra of He and Ne is presented. The resulting photoelectron angular distribution strongly depends on the orientation of the NIR polarization plane with respect to that of the XUV field. The prevailing influence of the intense NIR field over the angular emission characteristics for He(1s) and Ne(2p) ionization lines is shown. The underlying processes are modeled in the frame of the strong field approximation (SFA) which shows very consistent agreement with the experiment reaffirming the power of the SFA for multicolor-multiphoton ionization in this regime
Structural and magnetic dimers in the spin-gapped system CuTe2O5
We investigated the magnetic properties of the system CuTe2O5 by
susceptibility and electron spin resonance measurements. The anisotropy of the
effective g-factors and the ESR linewidth indicates that the anticipated
structural dimer does not correspond to the singlet-forming magnetic dimer.
Moreover, the spin susceptibility of CuTe2O5 can only be described by taking
into account interdimer interactions of the same order of magnitude than the
intradimer coupling. Analyzing the exchange couplings in the system we identify
the strongest magnetic coupling between two Cu ions to be mediated by
super-super exchange interaction via a bridging Te ligand, while the
superexchange coupling between the Cu ions of the structural dimer only results
in the second strongest coupling
Ground state order and spin-lattice coupling in tetrahedral spin systems Cu2Te2O5X2
High-resolution ac susceptibility and thermal conductivity measurement on
Cu2Te2O5X2(X=Br,Cl) single crystals are reported. For Br-sample, sample
dependence prevents to distinguish between possibilities of magnetically
ordered and spin-singlet ground states. In Cl-sample a three-dimensional
transition at 18.5 K is accompanied by almost isotropic behavior of
susceptibility and almost switching behavior of thermal conductivity. Thermal
conductivity studies suggest the presence of a tremendous spin-lattice coupling
characterizing Cl- but not Br-sample. Below the transition Cl-sample is in a
complex magnetic state involving AF order but also the elements consistent with

The Influence of the effect of solute on the thermodynamic driving force on grain refinement of Al alloys
Grain refinement is known to be strongly affected by the solute in cast alloys. Addition of some solute can reduce grain size considerably while others have a limited effect. This is usually attributed to the constitutional supercooling which is quantified by the growth restriction factor, Q. However, one factor that has not been considered is whether different solutes have differing effects on the thermodynamic driving force for solidification. This paper reveals that addition of solute reduces the driving force for solidification for a given undercooling, and that for a particular Q value, it is reduced more substantially when adding eutectic-forming solutes than peritectic-forming elements. Therefore, compared with the eutectic-forming solutes, addition of peritectic-forming solutes into Al alloys not only possesses a higher initial nucleation rate resulted from the larger thermodynamic driving force for solidification, but also promotes nucleation within the constitutionally supercooled zone during growth. As subsequent nucleation can occur at smaller constitutional supercoolings for peritectic-forming elements, a smaller grain size is thus produced. The very small constitutional supercooling required to trigger subsequent nucleation in alloys containing Ti is considered as a major contributor to its extraordinary grain refining efficiency in cast Al alloys even without the deliberate addition of inoculants.The Australian Research Council (ARC DP10955737)
Finite Element Convergence for the Joule Heating Problem with Mixed Boundary Conditions
We prove strong convergence of conforming finite element approximations to
the stationary Joule heating problem with mixed boundary conditions on
Lipschitz domains in three spatial dimensions. We show optimal global
regularity estimates on creased domains and prove a priori and a posteriori

Imaging Molecular Structure through Femtosecond Photoelectron Diffraction on Aligned and Oriented Gas-Phase Molecules
This paper gives an account of our progress towards performing femtosecond
time-resolved photoelectron diffraction on gas-phase molecules in a pump-probe
setup combining optical lasers and an X-ray Free-Electron Laser. We present
results of two experiments aimed at measuring photoelectron angular
distributions of laser-aligned 1-ethynyl-4-fluorobenzene (C8H5F) and
dissociating, laseraligned 1,4-dibromobenzene (C6H4Br2) molecules and discuss
them in the larger context of photoelectron diffraction on gas-phase molecules.
We also show how the strong nanosecond laser pulse used for adiabatically
laser-aligning the molecules influences the measured electron and ion spectra
and angular distributions, and discuss how this may affect the outcome of
