This story is an excerpt from an interview collected as part of the Launching through the Surf: The Dory Fleet of Pacific City project. The on-the-spot interview was conducted on the beach at Cape Kiwanda during Dory Days 2012. In this story, Carol Miles Johnson, Pacific City artist and dorywoman, describes the inspiration and process involved in the design of her series of Dory Days posters, which she began creating in 2004

Native American Spirituality and Healing in a Euro-American World

This study focuses on Native American spirituality and healing in a Euro-American world. Six interviews were conducted, two each at three different rural tribes in northern Minnesota. The people interviewed were leaders or teachers in local tribes and also elders who are respected in the communities. Some of the common themes that emerged were (a) a change in the communities, viewed as overtaken by drugs and alcohol and feeling unsafe; (b) changes in traditional spirituality; (c) changes in language; (d) honoring true American war heroes; (e) changes in values and views of the ways of living; and (f) the prevalence of humor in the Indian community, which is significant for understanding worldviews and perspectives. An overwhelming response was that all the participants had unquestioning love for their immediate family, extended family, and the whole community. The words and passion spoken clearly by all the elders were about wanting their community to be a better place for future generations, for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren

Teaching English Language Arts Using Comics

This Action Research Project was designed to help me examine and improve my ability to use assessment in the curriculum cycle, my ability to differentiate specifically using comics, and my use of comics as a best practice in teaching English language arts. This research was specifically designed to use data from my teaching during my time in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at Western Oregon University. My evidence consisted of lesson plans, class syllabi, supervisor observations, teacher created artifacts, and a reflective journal. This evidence helped me examine my own practices and look at my own improvement over time. Through analyzing the data, I was able to learn what areas I have improved in and which areas of my teaching practices still need to be addressed. I was able to identify next steps in my career and ideas for continual improvement. I have concluded that it is important to be intentional in planning for the areas of assessment and differentiation. I also concluded that comics can enrich assessment, differentiation, and best practices in teaching English language arts

Formation and properties of new Ni-based amorphous alloys with critical casting thickness up to 5 mm

    Get PDF
New Ni-based bulk metallic glasses were synthesized in NixCua−xTiyZrb−yAl10 (a~b~45 at.%) system, based on a ternary alloy, Ni45Ti20Zr35. The additions of Al and Cu greatly increase the glass-forming ability (GFA). The best GFA is located around Ni40Cu5Ti16.5Zr28.5Al10, from which fully amorphous samples of up to 5 mm thickness were successfully fabricated by an injection mold casting method. These alloys exhibit high glass-transition temperatures Tg ~ 760 to 780 K, and relatively wide undercooled-liquid regions ΔT (defined by the difference between Tg and the first crystallization temperature Tx1 upon heating) ~ 40–50 K. Mechanical tests on these alloys show quite high Vicker's Hardness ~ 780 to 862 kg/mm^2, Young's modulus ~ 111 to 134 GPa, shear modulus ~ 40 to 50 GPa and high fracture strength ~ 2.3 to 2.4 GPa. The effect of small Si-addition and a discrepancy between GFA and ΔT are also reported. The exceptional GFA and the all-metallic compositions give these new alloys excellent promise for both scientific and engineering applications
