    A simple model of electron-vibron interactions in buckminsterfullerene ions is solved semiclassically. Electronic degeneracies of C60_{60}n^{n-} induce dynamical Jahn-Teller distortions, which are unimodal for n ⁣ ⁣3n\!\ne\!3 and bimodal for n ⁣= ⁣3n\!=\!3. The quantization of motion along the Jahn-Teller manifold leads to a symmetric-top rotator Hamiltonian. I find Molecular Aharonov-Bohm effects where electronic Berry phases determine the vibrational spectra, zero point fluctuations, and electrons' pair binding energies.     Recreational Exposure to Low Concentrations of Microcystins During an Algal Bloom in a Small Lake

    We measured microcystins in blood from people at risk for swallowing water or inhaling spray while swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, or boating during an algal bloom. We monitored water samples from a small lake as a Microcystis aeruginosa bloom developed. We recruited 97 people planning recreational activities in that lake and seven others who volunteered to recreate in a nearby bloom-free lake. We conducted our field study within a week of finding a 10-μg/L microcystin concentration. We analyzed water, air, and human blood samples for water quality, potential human pathogens, algal taxonomy, and microcystin concentrations. We interviewed study participants for demographic and current health symptom information. Water samples were assayed for potential respiratory viruses (adenoviruses and enteroviruses), but none were detected. We did find low concentrations of Escherichia coli, indicating fecal contamination. We found low levels of microcystins (2 μg/L to 5 μg/L) in the water and (<0.1 ng/m3) in the aerosol samples. Blood levels of microcystins for all participants were below the limit of detection (0.147μg/L). Given this low exposure level, study participants reported no symptom increases following recreational exposure to microcystins. This is the first study to report that water-based recreational activities can expose people to very low concentrations of aerosol-borne microcystins; we recently conducted another field study to assess exposures to higher concentrations of these algal toxins

    Development of a CsI Calorimeter for the Compton-Pair (ComPair) Balloon-Borne Gamma-Ray Telescope

    There is a growing interest in astrophysics to fill in the observational gamma-ray MeV gap. We, therefore, developed a CsI:Tl calorimeter prototype as a subsystem to a balloon-based Compton and Pair-production telescope known as ComPair. ComPair is a technology demonstrator for a gamma-ray telescope in the MeV range that is comprised of 4 subsystems: the double-sided silicon detector, virtual Frisch grid CdZnTe, CsI calorimeter, and a plastic-based anti-coincidence detector. The prototype CsI calorimeter is composed of thirty CsI logs, each with a geometry of 1.67×1.67×10 cm31.67 \times 1.67 \times 10 \ \mathrm{cm^3}. The logs are arranged in a hodoscopic fashion with 6 in a row that alternate directions in each layer. Each log has a resolution of around 8%8 \% full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) at 662 keV662 \ \mathrm{keV} with a dynamic energy range of around 250 keV30 MeV250\ \mathrm{keV}-30 \ \mathrm{MeV}. A 2×22\times2 array of SensL J-series SiPMs read out each end of the log to estimate the depth of interaction and energy deposition with signals read out with an IDEAS ROSSPAD. We also utilize an Arduino to synchronize with the other ComPair subsystems that comprise the full telescope. This work presents the development and performance of the calorimeter, its testing in thermal and vacuum conditions, and results from irradiation by 225 MeV2-25 \ \mathrm{MeV} monoenergetic gamma-ray beams. The CsI calorimeter will fly onboard ComPair as a balloon experiment in the summer of 2023

    Nonperturbative approach to the Hubbard model in C60 cluster

    We propose a computational scheme for the Hubbard model in the C60 cluster in which the interaction with the Fermi sea of charges added to the neutral molecule is switched on sequentially. This is applied to the calculation of the balance of charging energies, within a low-energy truncation of the space of states which produces moderate errors for an intermediate range of the interaction strength.Comment: 5 pages, Revtex, 2 figure

    Electron--Vibron Interactions and Berry Phases in Charged Buckminsterfullerene: Part I

    A simple model for electron-vibron interactions on charged buckminsterfullerene C60n_{60}^{n-}, n=1,5n=1,\ldots 5, is solved both at weak and strong couplings. We consider a single HgH_g vibrational multiplet interacting with t1ut_{1u} electrons. At strong coupling the semiclassical dynamical Jahn-Teller theory is valid. The Jahn-Teller distortions are unimodal for nn=1,2,4,5 electrons, and bimodal for 3 electrons. The distortions are quantized as rigid body pseudo--rotators which are subject to geometrical Berry phases. These impose ground state degeneracies and dramatically change zero point energies. Exact diagonalization shows that the semiclassical level degeneracies and ordering survive well into the weak coupling regime. At weak coupling, we discover an enhancement factor of 5/25/2 for the pair binding energies over their classical values. This has potentially important implications for superconductivity in fullerides, and demonstrates the shortcoming of Migdal--Eliashberg theory for molecular crystals.Comment: 29 pages (+7 figures, 3 available upon request), LATEX, report-number: BM515

    Detailed Abundances in the Ultra-faint Magellanic Satellites Carina II and III

    We present the first detailed elemental abundances in the ultra-faint Magellanic satellite galaxies Carina II (Car II) and Carina III (Car III). With high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectroscopy, we determined abundances of nine stars in Car II including the first abundances of an RR Lyrae star in an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy; and two stars in Car III. The chemical abundances demonstrate that both systems are clearly galaxies and not globular clusters. The stars in these galaxies mostly display abundance trends matching those of other similarly faint dwarf galaxies: enhanced but declining [alpha/Fe] ratios, iron-peak elements matching the stellar halo, and unusually low neutron-capture element abundances. One star displays a low outlying [Sc/Fe] = -1.0. We detect a large Ba scatter in Car II, likely due to inhomogeneous enrichment by low-mass AGB star winds. The most striking abundance trend is for [Mg/Ca] in Car II, which decreases from +0.4 to -0.4 and indicates clear variation in the initial progenitor masses of enriching core-collapse supernovae. So far, the only ultra-faint dwarf galaxies displaying a similar [Mg/Ca] trend are likely satellites of the Large Magellanic Cloud. We find two stars with [Fe/H] < -3.5, whose abundances likely trace the first generation of metal-free Population III stars and are well-fit by Population III core-collapse supernova yields.
