    The irradiation effects of 22 MeV protons on the electrical characteristics of GaAs continuous-wave Gunn oscillators was studied. The radio frequency power output was reduced by 3 decibels at proton fluences in the neighborhood of 1.5 x 10 to the 12th power protons/sq cm. Conductance measurements indicate that the carrier removal rate at high electric fields remained roughly 40 percent less than at low fields. Diode efficiencies of two device groups were found to be monotonically descreasing functions of fluence. Frequency modulation noise was generally unaffected by radiation, but the magnitude of the noise in the noise power spectrum increased significantly. These effects are partially accounted for, in a qualitative fashion, by a model of electron traps having field-dependent net-carrier capture rates and various response times

    Fatigue damage in cross-ply titanium metal matrix composites containing center holes

    The development of fatigue damage in (0/90) sub SCS-6/TI-15-3 laminates containing center holes was studied. Stress levels required for crack initiation in the matrix were predicted using an effective strain parameter and compared to experimental results. Damage progression was monitored at various stages of fatigue loading. In general, a saturated state of damage consisting of matrix cracks and fiber matrix debonding was obtained which reduced the composite modulus. Matrix cracks were bridged by the 0 deg fibers. The fatigue limit (stress causing catastrophic fracture of the laminates) was also determined. The static and post fatigue residual strengths were accurately predicted using a three dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis. The matrix damage that occurred during fatigue loading significantly reduced the notched strength

    Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Rangeland Pastoral Systems in the Edwards Plateau of Texas

    This paper focuses on pastoral systems in an area of west-central Texas known as the Edwards Plateau. These rangelands have a combination of grass, forb and browse species and are used primarily for combinations of grazing by cattle, sheep, goats and wildlife. A major ecological challenge is woody plant encroachment. Stocking rate is the major factor affecting sustainability and historically this area was heavily grazed. Today the stocking rate is half or less of its historical peak. Species of livestock has shifted from predominantly small ruminant to cattle. About 70 % of pastoralists use some sort of rotational grazing system. On average ranches lose equity from livestock but appreciating land values make up for this loss. Rangelands are still a good investment for those that can afford them. Land ownership is changing and is creating land fragmentation problems and a need for targeted educational provision
