Maladaptive behavior and affect regulation: A functionalist perspective.
Clinical science has benefited tremendously from taking seriously the proposition that putatively maladaptive behaviors serve psychological functions, prominently among these affect regulation (AR). These functionalist accounts have not only advanced basic clinical science, but also formed the bedrock for the development of effective treatments. Drawing heavily on reinforcement learning theory, we aim to elucidate functional relationships between maladaptive behavior and AR. Specifically, we take the view that maladaptive behaviors are frequently motivated and reinforced by hedonic AR functions (i.e., decreasing negative affect and increasing positive affect) but are also susceptible to becoming stimulus-bound habits. We review empirical evidence related to one such behavior, nonsuicidal self-injury. We close with a brief reflection on future directions. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)

Relationship Between Supervisors\u27 Servant Leadership and Police Officers Job Satisfaction
Recent police killings of unarmed African Americans in the United States and the subsequent protests and demonstrations against police brutality have resulted in more focus on the importance of collaborative relationships between law enforcement agencies and their communities. This quantitative correlational research study was conducted in one southern United States police department that incorporated a servant leadership philosophy, including its leaders being publicly heralded for their servant leadership practices that positively impacted its relationship with its community. The study examined if a relationship existed between perceived servant leadership of law enforcement leaders and line police officersâ job satisfaction. The studyâs participants n=31 completed the Servant Leadership Scale to measure servant leadership characteristics and Job Descriptive Index to measure employee job satisfaction. Results indicated a statistically significant relationship between servant leadership and employee job satisfaction of the police officers in the department
Collaboration Between Universities and Public Schools for Improved Student Achievement: A Report on the Progress of a Developing Partnership
This article reports the progress of one project aimed at bringing together professionals from post-secondary and K-12 environments. The project is being implemented at Richards Middle (RMS) in Columbus, Georgia and involves a collaborative partnership between several universities and RMS, resulting in a school-based evaluation initiative with direct implications for strengthening leadership, training, and instructional practices in schools. Faculty researchers from three universities from two states, Troy University, Columbus State University, and Auburn University are working collaboratively with faculty and staff of Richards Middle School on an inquiry with a three-fold purpose. The primary goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of the schoolâs International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme in its first year of implementation in the sixth grade. A second goal of the investigation is to evaluate the effectiveness of the staff training and development process employed during the initial year in terms of effective professional learning practices. A third goal is to investigate the effectiveness of the collaborative process itself in terms of the implementation of the dialogic approach discussed in Clark, et al. (1996)
Characterisation of the Cullin-3 mutation that causes a severe form of familial hypertension and hyperkalaemia
Deletion of exon 9 from Cullinâ3 (CUL3, residues 403â459: CUL3Î403â459) causes pseudohypoaldosteronism type IIE (PHA2E), a severe form of familial hyperkalaemia and hypertension (FHHt). CUL3 binds the RING protein RBX1 and various substrate adaptors to form CullinâRINGâubiquitinâligase complexes. Bound to KLHL3, CUL3âRBX1 ubiquitylates WNK kinases, promoting their ubiquitinâmediated proteasomal degradation. Since WNK kinases activate Na/Cl coâtransporters to promote salt retention, CUL3 regulates blood pressure. Mutations in both KLHL3 and WNK kinases cause PHA2 by disrupting CullinâRINGâligase formation. We report here that the PHA2E mutant, CUL3Î403â459, is severely compromised in its ability to ubiquitylate WNKs, possibly due to altered structural flexibility. Instead, CUL3Î403â459 autoâubiquitylates and loses interaction with two important Cullin regulators: the COP9âsignalosome and CAND1. A novel knockâin mouse model of CUL3WT/Î403â459 closely recapitulates the human PHA2E phenotype. These mice also show changes in the arterial pulse waveform, suggesting a vascular contribution to their hypertension not reported in previous FHHt models. These findings may explain the severity of the FHHt phenotype caused by CUL3 mutations compared to those reported in KLHL3 or WNK kinases
