Sir Austen Chamberlain, the Marquess of Crewe and Anglo-French Relations, 1924–1928

During the mid-1920s, Britain's relationship with France was of crucial importance to understanding the entire rationale behind British policy towards European diplomacy. This article is concerned with the dynamics of the relationship between the francophile British Foreign Secretary, Sir Austen Chamberlain and Britain's ambassador to Paris, the Marquess of Crewe. Both men remained in post for sufficient time to influence the tone as well as the direction of Anglo-French relations, and yet in the case of Crewe, nothing to date has been written about his contribution to international diplomacy. This article argues that many of Chamberlain's ideas about Anglo-French relations were shaped by the ideas and influence of Crewe, especially on issues concerning French security and disarmament policy. Focus is placed on the later stages of the Ruhr crisis, the implementation of the Geneva Protocol, the Treaty of Locarno and the origins of the Kellogg–Briand Pact

Austen Chamberlain and Britain's relationship with France, 1924-1929

Several historians have suggested that Austen Chamberlain's Francophile tendencies during his period as foreign secretary between 1924 and 1929 were the defining features of his European diplomatic strategy. By examining four key events: the rejection of the Geneva Protocol, the conclusion of the Treaty of Locarno, the Anglo-French Compromise on disarmament and the negotiation of the Kellogg-Briand Pact, this article argues that Chamberlain's relationship with the French was not entirely harmonious. After the high point of Locarno, Britain's relations with France became increasingly tense because of Chamberlain's growing disillusionment with Briand's willingness to pursue a diplomatic agenda that did not have at its heart a reinvigorated Entente Cordiale

Using tabu search and genetic algorithms in mathematics research

    Get PDF
This paper discusses an ongoing project which uses computational heuristic search techniques such as tabu search and genetic algorithms as a tool for mathematics research. We discuss three ways in which such search techniques can be useful for mathematicians: in nding counterexamples to conjectures, in enumerating examples, and in nding sequences of transformations between two objects which are conjectured to be related. These problem-types are discussed using examples from topology

Universal sized vest, with specially tailored pockets designed to hold medical supplies, provides first aid/first care medical teams with broadened on-site capability. Vest is made of nylon, tough fibrous materials, and polyvinyl chloride. Design facilitates rapid donning, doffing, and adjustment

The unique determination of density from high-order potentials

    Get PDF
The existence of higher-order potentials is postulated, and that the density function can be determined from this set of potentials is demonstrated. Moreover, it is shown that there is a one-to-one correspondence between such potentials and the density function, provided it is continuous. Finally, it is noted that this demonstration includes a method of constructing the density function from the set of potentials as well as indicating how to approximate the density from incomplete knowledge of the potentials

Practical nous as the aim of legal education?

    Get PDF
There has been an implicit assumption that legal education should be about exposition and evaluation, and should reward facility in exposition and theoretical awareness. This theoretically based assumption generates a theory-induced blindness. Specifically, it obscures the dynamic relationship between law and legal practice, despite it being a familiar aspect of the world. The lawyer as rule entrepreneur is lost sight of. One alternative assumption about legal education would be that law is a game like activity; and legal education should be directed towards promoting those qualities that would enhance performance in this game. In this approach to legal education it would be practical nous that would be sought and rewarded, and such qualities as facility in exposition and theoretical awareness would receive recognition merely as qualities that can be ancillary to and elements of practical nous. Doctrinal legal education naturally pulls towards the first theory, and clinical legal education naturally pulls towards the second. We argue for a clearer awareness of the role of rule entrepreneurship in clinical programmes and in legal education generally

Relaxation solution of the full Euler equations

    Get PDF
A numerical procedure for the relaxation solution of the full steady Euler equations is described. By embedding the Euler system in a second order surrogate system, central differencing may be used in subsonic regions while retaining matrix forms well suited to iterative solution procedures and convergence acceleration techniques. Hence, this method allows the development of stable, fully conservative differencing schemes for the solution of quite general inviscid flow problems. Results are presented for both subcritical and shocked supercritical internal flows. Comparisons are made with a standard time dependent solution algorithm
