Nesting Success and Mortality of Nestlings in a Coastal Alabama Heron - Egret Colony, 1976

A heronry at Cat Island, Alabama was surveyed throughout the 1976 breeding season to determine colony structure and survivability of young Ardeidae during varying weather conditions. A total of 155 nests were tagged and the clutch of each monitored until the nestlings abandoned the nests. Offspring of herons nesting during unfavorable weather conditions of late Spring suffered significantly higher mortality than birds nesting in mid-summer. Species nesting on Cat Island include the Louisiana Heron, Snowy Egret, Great Egret, Cattle Egret, Little Blue Heron, Green Heron, and Glossy Ibis

The Attainment of Pay Equity Between the Sexes by Legal Means: An Economic Analysis

The purpose of this Article is to present an analysis of the gap between men\u27s and women\u27s wages with particular emphasis on the likely effects of various existing and proposed legal remedies. Part I sets out a simple ideal statistical model of wage determination. Its purpose is to identify carefully the potential impact of alternative legal remedies such as the Equal Pay Act, Title VII, and proposed policies like comparable worth. This model is ideal in the sense that, although it could be estimated in principle, there is no data set currently available with which it could actually be estimated. Part II explores the impact of these various legal remedies on individual organizations, because each existing or proposed remedy would be implemented on an organization- by-organization basis rather than on an economy wide basis. Part III addresses the empirical dimensions of the problem raised by the comparable worth movement-the average wage disparity between men\u27s jobs and women\u27s jobs. We initially offer a range of estimates of the potential impact of comparable worth on the average male-female wage gap in the United States based on the assumption that there would be no secondary effects on employment, relative prices, and other wage levels. This assumption is lifted in Part IV, which discusses the adjustments that organizations affected by comparable worth or other laws would make in their employment of different types of labor, the associated wage rates, and their product prices. Consideration of these secondary effects implies that legal interventions designed to improve the relative labor market status of women might have very different effects from those expected under the zero-adjustment assumption of Part III

Income Distribution in Jamaica

Since independence in 1962, Jamaica has witnessed changes in the physical and human capital stocks, taxation policies, production technology, household structure and even the general economic system. The percentage of illiterate population declined from 16 percent in 1960 to less than 5 percent by the late 70\u27s and per capita disposable income (nominal) has more than doubled (The Statistical Institute, 1982). Bauxite and sugar, both major sources of foreign exchange, are in economic difficulty caused by declining world prices of aluminum and sugar. These and many other factors, including changes in political institutions in Jamaica, may have resulted in a redistribution of income among households since 1960

Inflatable nested toroid structure

An inflatable structure comprises at least two generally toroidal, inflatable modules. When in a deployed mode, the first, inner module has a major diameter less than that of a second, outer module and is positioned within the inner circumference of the outer module such that the first module is nested circumferentially alongside the second module. The inflatable structure, in a non-deployed, non-inflated mode, is of compact configuration and adapted to be transported to a site of deployment. When deployed, the inflatable structure is of substantially increased interior volume. In one embodiment, access between the interior of the first module and the second module is provided by at least one port or structural pass-through. In another embodiment, the inflatable structure includes at least one additional generally toroidal module external of and circumferentially surrounding the second module

Improved Attachment in a Hybrid Inflatable Pressure Vessel

The vessel is a hybrid that comprises an inflatable shell attached to a rigid structure. The inflatable shell is, itself, a hybrid that comprises (1) a pressure bladder restrained against expansion by (2) a restraint layer that comprises a web of straps made from high-strength polymeric fabrics. The present improvements are intended to overcome deficiencies in those aspects of the original design that pertain to attachment of the inflatable shell to the rigid structure. In a typical intended application, such attachment(s) would be made at one or more window or hatch frames to incorporate the windows or hatches as integral parts of the overall vessel
