Librarians involved in assisting researchers with planning, execution and documentation of systematic literature searches are well aware of the considerable amount of practice required to conduct reliable, transparent, and reproducible literature searches. In addition to building the necessary skills and knowledge, factors such as changes in databases, updates in standards or methodologies, and development of new tools makes it difficult to keep up to date. In response an online community of practice has been established in Norway to serve as a platform for facilitating knowledge sharing in these areas. However, building and maintaining an active community is not an easy task. This article describes the development, the activities, the challenges, and the possible future for the community

Illicit substances detected through high-resolution MS analysis in urine samples are associated with greater symptom burden in patients with psychosis

Background The prevalence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) in acute psychotic patients has not been investigated systematically. We applied a highly sensitive and specific mass spectrometry method for detection of NPS as well as traditional drugs of abuse (including illicit or prescription substances) in order to assess their prevalence and associations with symptom severity. Identification of these substances is useful in both the diagnostic process and evaluation of treatment effects. Methods Demographic data, results from the Positive and Negative Syndrome Score (PANSS) and Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS) and urine samples from admission were collected from 53 patients recruited into a clinical study of psychosis during 2014-2017. Urine samples were analysed with liquid chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS), through both highly specific detection of 191 substances using internal standards and untargeted screening by means of pre-defined libraries. PANSS and CDSS scores in patients with or without drugs of abuse were compared. Results Potential drugs of abuse, i.e. drugs that could be used in a controlled therapeutic or a non-prescribed manner, were detected in samples from 20 of the 53 patients. Seven samples contained illicit drugs, but no NPS were detected. In this small patient subgroup, PANSS total score and CDSS score were significantly higher than in patients with negative urine sample results. Conclusion Drug screening could play an important role in the differential diagnostic evaluation of patients admitted with psychotic symptoms. Although no NPS were detected in the study population, we found other substances that were associated with psychotic and depressive symptoms.publishedVersio

Complete response to anti-interleukin-5 biologics in a real-life setting:results from the nationwide Danish Severe Asthma Register

BACKGROUND: Phase III regulatory trials show that anti-interleukin (IL)-5 biologics efficiently reduce exacerbations and the use of maintenance oral corticosteroids (mOCS) in patients with severe eosinophilic asthma. However, patients eligible for these trials differ significantly compared with real-life severe asthma populations. Therefore, our aim was to explore efficacy in a real-life setting. The Danish Severe Asthma Register (DSAR) is a complete, nationwide register that comprises all Danish patients on biological therapy for severe asthma. METHODS: This prospective study identified patients in the DSAR who were complete responders to anti-IL-5 biologics after 1 year of treatment. A complete response was defined as resolution of the parameter setting the indication, i.e. recurrent exacerbations and/or use of mOCS. RESULTS: A total of 289 out of 502 (58%) patients were complete responders to anti-IL-5 biologics after 12 months. Complete responders had greater improvements in forced expiratory volume in 1 s and Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ) score compared with noncomplete responders (Δ 210 versus 30 mL; p<0.0001 and Δ −1.04 versus −0.68; p=0.016, respectively). A complete response was predicted by age at onset, less severe disease at baseline (i.e. no mOCS and lower ACQ score) and higher blood eosinophils. CONCLUSIONS: More than half of Danish patients treated with anti-IL-5 biologics for severe asthma achieve a complete response to treatment, thereby becoming free from asthma exacerbations and the need for mOCS. Complete responders also achieved superior effects on lung function and symptoms compared with noncomplete responders

Highly mixed impacts of near-future climate change on stock productivity proxies in the North East Atlantic

Impacts of climate change on ocean productivity sustaining world fisheries are predominantly negative but vary greatly among regions. We assessed how 39 fisheries resources—ranging from data-poor to data-rich stocks—in the North East Atlantic are most likely affected under the intermediate climate emission scenario RCP4.5 towards 2050. This region is one of the most productive waters in the world but subjected to pronounced climate change, especially in the northernmost part. In this climate impact assessment, we applied a hybrid solution combining expert opinions (scorings)—supported by an extensive literature review—with mechanistic approaches, considering stocks in three different large marine ecosystems, the North, Norwegian and Barents Seas. This approach enabled calculation of the directional effect as a function of climate exposure and sensitivity attributes (life-history schedules), focusing on local stocks (conspecifics) across latitudes rather than the species in general. The resulting synopsis (50–82°N) contributes substantially to global assessments of major fisheries (FAO, The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture, 2020), complementing related studies off northeast United States (35–45°N) (Hare et al., PLoS One, 2016, 11, e0146756) and Portugal (37–42°N) (Bueno-Pardo et al., Scientific Reports, 2021, 11, 2958). Contrary to prevailing fisheries forecasts elsewhere, we found that most assessed stocks respond positively. However, the underlying, extensive environmental clines implied that North East Atlantic stocks will develop entirely different depending upon the encountered stressors: cold-temperate stocks at the southern and Arctic stocks at the northern fringes appeared severely negatively impacted, whereas warm-temperate stocks expanding from south were found to do well along with cold-temperate stocks currently inhabiting below-optimal temperatures in the northern subregion.publishedVersio

BACKGROUND: The development of novel targeted biologic therapies for severe asthma has provided an opportunity to consider remission as a new treatment goal.RESEARCH QUESTION: How many severe asthma patients treated with biologic therapy achieve clinical remission, and what predicts response to treatment?STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The Danish Severe Asthma Registry is a nationwide register including all adult patients receiving biologic therapy for severe asthma in Denmark. We conducted an observational cohort study and defined "clinical response" to treatment after 12 months as ≥50% reduction in exacerbations, and/or a ≥50% reduction in maintenance oral corticosteroid dose, if required. "Clinical remission" was defined by cessation of exacerbations and maintenance OCS, as well as a normalization of lung function (FEV1%>80%) and an Asthma Control Questionnaire-6 score ≤1.50 after 12 months of treatment.RESULTS: After 12 months of treatment of 501 biologically naïve patients, there were 104 (21%) patients with no response to treatment, whereas 397 (79%) had a clinical response. Among the latter, 97 (24%) fulfilled our criteria of clinical remission, corresponding to 19% in the entire population. Remission was predicted by shorter duration of disease and lower BMI in our entire population of all patients treated with biologic therapy.INTERPRETATION: Clinical response was achieved in most adult patients initiating biologic therapy and clinical remission was observed in 19% of the patients after 12 months of treatment. Further studies are required to assess the long-term outcome of achieving clinical remission on biologic therapy.</p

Alien plants, animals, fungi and algae in Norway: an inventory of neobiota

No full text
We present the results of an inventory and status assessment of alien species in Norway. The inventory covered all known multicellular neobiota, 2496 in total, 1039 of which were classified as naturalised. The latter constitute c. 3% of all species known to be stably reproducing in Norway. These figures are higher than expected from Norway’s latitude, which may be due a combination of climatic and historical factors, as well as sampling effort. Most of the naturalised neobiota were plants (71%),followed by animals (21%) and fungi (8%). The main habitat types colonised were open lowlands (79%), urban environments (52%) and woodlands (42%). The main areas of origin were Europe (67%), North America (15%) and Asia (13%). For most taxa, the rate of novel introductions seems to have been increasing during recent decades. Within Norway, the number of alien species recorded per county was negatively correlated with latitude and positively correlated with human population density. In the high-Arctic territories under Norwegian sovereignty, i.e. Svalbard and Jan Mayen, 104 alien species were recorded, of which 5 were naturalised
