    Galaxy Mergers with Adaptive Mesh Refinement: Star Formation and Hot Gas Outflow

    In hierarchical structure formation, merging of galaxies is frequent and known to dramatically affect their properties. To comprehend these interactions high-resolution simulations are indispensable because of the nonlinear coupling between pc and Mpc scales. To this end, we present the first adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) simulation of two merging, low mass, initially gas-rich galaxies (1.8e10 Ms each), including star formation and feedback. With galaxies resolved by ~2e7 total computational elements, we achieve unprecedented resolution of the multiphase interstellar medium, finding a widespread starburst in the merging galaxies via shock-induced star formation. The high dynamic range of AMR also allows us to follow the interplay between the galaxies and their embedding medium depicting how galactic outflows and a hot metal-rich halo form.     Does thalamotomy alter the course of Parkinson's disease?

    Journal ArticleIrving Cooper (3) observed that unilateral Parkinson's disease seemed less likely to progress to the other side of the body after thalamotomy that abolished contralateral tremor and rigidity, an effect that he felt might be the result of either the surgery itself or the slow progression of that particular patient's disease. In 1968, Scott et al. (16) reviewed 72 of Cooper's patients who had undergone thalamotomy for unilateral tremor and rigidity before 1963 and found that the disease had progressed to the opposite side in 33% of both the 39 with incomplete and the 33 with complete postoperative relief of contralateral tremor and rigidity. Matsumoto et al. (10) resurrected the notion that surgery might influence the progress of Parkinson's disease, reporting that 48.4% of 64 patients undergoing unilateral, and 63.6% of 22 undergoing bilateral thalamotomy between 1964 and 1969 did not progress after completion of surgery up to the time of their review in 1981, and Miyamoto et al. (11) reached similar conclusions

    Rambo (2008) marked the return of Sylvester Stallone's iconic action hero. What is most striking about the fourth film (as the response from reviewers testifies), is its graphic violence. My intention here is to critically engage with Rambo (2008) as rewriting the series' established aesthetic of violence. My overarching aim is to highlight how the popular press has sought to read the 2008 version of Rambo according to the discursive narratives surrounding Stallone's 1980s action films. The negative response to Rambo, I argue, stems from relying on critical patterns that do not fit the film itself

    Liver Parasites and Body Condition in Relation to Environmental Contaminants in Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) from Labrador, Canada

    Over the last several decades, elders and hunters of the Innu Nation in Labrador, Canada, have expressed concerns over perceived declines in environmental health and the integrity of country food, including caribou. The primary objective of this study was to determine links between specific health parameters and contaminants found in caribou from the George River herd. Twenty-seven caribou killed by local Innu hunters between February and December 2001 were evaluated for gross and microscopic pathology, body condition, liver parasitology, and contaminant levels in kidney and fat. Overall, the sampled caribou appeared to be in adequate body condition for the time of year, and no clinically significant lesions were found. Concentrations of selenium, metals (Hg, Cd, and Pb), 20 organochlorine pesticides (HCB, a-HCH, g-HCH, aldrin, dieldrin, methoxychlor, mirex, a- and b-endosulfan, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, g-CHL, cis-CHL, trans-nonachlor, and o,p'- and p,p'-DDD, DDE, DDT), and 24 PCB congeners were within the ranges reported for caribou in Canada. In general, contaminant levels were relatively low, with the exception of cadmium in kidneys (geometric mean: 6.5 μg/g wet weight; range: 1.5–44.0 μg/g). Two types of liver parasites were found: the liver fluke Fascioloides magna (prevalence: 78%; geometric mean abundance: 4.2 flukes/caribou) and a tapeworm larva consistent with Taenia hydatigena (prevalence: 50%; geometric mean abundance: 0.6 larvae/caribou). Using multiple variable regression analysis, we found renal concentrations of cadmium to be positively associated, and selenium to be negatively associated, with F. magna abundance.Ces dernières décennies, les aînés et les chasseurs de la nation montagnaise du Labrador, au Canada, ont exprimé des inquiétudes au sujet du déclin de la santé de l’environnement et de l’intégrité de la nourriture provenant de la campagne, telle que le caribou. L’objectif principal de cette étude consistait à déterminer les liens qui existent entre certains paramètres de santé précis et les contaminants se trouvant dans le caribou du troupeau de la rivière George. Vingt-sept caribous ayant été tués par les chasseurs montagnais de la région entre les mois de février et de décembre 2001 ont subi des examens pathologiques macroscopiques et microscopiques, en plus d’avoir été évalués pour en déterminer l’état du corps, la parasitologie du foie et les taux de contaminants dans le foie et le gras. Dans l’ensemble, l’état des corps de caribous échantillonnés semblait adéquat pour cette période de l’année et aucune lésion clinique importante n’a été signalée. Les concentrations de sélénium, de métaux (Hg, Cd et Pb), de 20 pesticides organochlorés (HCB, a-HCH, g-HCH, aldrine, dieldrine, méthoxychlore, mirex, a- et b-endosulfane, heptachlore, heptachlorépoxyde, g-CHL, cis-CHL, trans-nonachlore ainsi que o,p'- et p,p'-DDD, DDE, DDT) et de 24 congénères de PCB s’établissaient dans les étendues signalées pour le caribou au Canada.     The Galactic Magnetic Field's Effect in Star-Forming Region

    We investigate the effect of the Milky Way's magnetic field in star forming regions using archived 350 micron polarization data on 52 Galactic star formation regions from the Hertz polarimeter module. The polarization angles and percentages for individual telescope beams were combined in order to produce a large-scale average for each source and for complexes of sources. In more than 80% of the sources, we find a meaningful mean magnetic field direction, implying the existence of an ordered magnetic field component at the scale of these sources. The average polarization angles were analyzed with respect to the Galactic coordinates in order to test for correlations between polarization percentage, polarization angle, intensity, and Galactic location. No correlation was found, which suggests that the magnetic field in dense molecular clouds is decoupled from the large-scale Galactic magnetic field. Finally, we show that the magnetic field directions in the complexes are consistent with a random distribution on the sky

    Cerebral cortex maldevelopment in syndromic craniosynostosis

    AIM: To assess the relationship of surface area of the cerebral cortex to intracranial volume (ICV) in syndromic craniosynostosis. METHOD: Records of 140 patients (64 males, 76 females; mean age 8y 6mo [SD 5y 6mo], range 1y 2mo–24y 2mo) with syndromic craniosynostosis were reviewed to include clinical and imaging data. Two hundred and three total magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were evaluated in this study (148 patients with fibroblast growth factor receptor [FGFR], 19 patients with TWIST1, and 36 controls). MRIs were processed via FreeSurfer pipeline to determine total ICV and cortical surface area (CSA). Scaling coefficients were calculated from log‐transformed data via mixed regression to account for multiple measurements, sex, syndrome, and age. Educational outcomes were reported by syndrome. RESULTS: Mean ICV was greater in patients with FGFR (1519cm(3), SD 269cm(3), p=0.016) than in patients with TWIST1 (1304cm(3), SD 145cm(3)) or controls (1405cm(3), SD 158cm(3)). CSA was related to ICV by a scaling law with an exponent of 0.68 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.61–0.76) in patients with FGFR compared to 0.81 (95% CI 0.50–1.12) in patients with TWIST1 and 0.77 (95% CI 0.61–0.93) in controls. Lobar analysis revealed reduced scaling in the parietal (0.50, 95% CI 0.42–0.59) and occipital (0.67, 95% CI 0.54–0.80) lobes of patients with FGFR compared with controls. Modified learning environments were needed more often in patients with FGFR. INTERPRETATION: Despite adequate ICV in FGFR‐mediated craniosynostosis, CSA development is reduced, indicating maldevelopment, particularly in parietal and occipital lobes.
