    Depuis la mise en place du National Curriculum, un dĂ©coupage des disciplines artistiques enseignĂ©es a progressivement Ă©tĂ© Ă©laborĂ© et des objectifs gĂ©nĂ©raux ont Ă©tĂ© formulĂ©s qui rĂ©vĂšlent des tensions, tant dans la philosophie qui les inspire que dans leur conception et dans les pratiques auxquelles ils donnent lieu. Les programmes officiels, riches en apparence, sont cependant marquĂ©s par des orthodoxies, des conservatismes et une culture de la performance que l’auteur estime sclĂ©rosants. Notant le soutien du gouvernement pour ancrer l’éducation artistique dans les enjeux de la sociĂ©tĂ©, l’auteur plaide pour un renouvellement des contenus de cet enseignement.Since the implementation of the National Curriculum, a partition of the various art subjects taught in England has gradually been worked out and general objectives have been defined, showing tensions both in the philosophy that underlies them and in their conception and the practices they generate. Although academic curricula seem rich and complex, they are nonetheless marred by orthodoxy, conservatism and an achievement-oriented culture the author considers crippling. Acknowledging the governement’s support to include art education in the stakes of society, the author pleads for a renewal of the contents of the subject.Desde la implantaciĂłn del National Curriculum, se ha elaborado progresivamente un listado de disciplinas artĂ­sticas enseñadas y se han formulado objetivos generales que revelan la existencia de tensiones, tanto en la filosofĂ­a que los inspira como en su concepciĂłn y en las prĂĄcticas a las que dan lugar.     The Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Registry and Patient Survey: study design, methods and patient baseline characteristics

    To describe the design and baseline cohort characteristics of the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Registry and Patient Survey, an ongoing, prospective, observational, disease registry documenting management practices and patient outcomes in men in the USA with lower urinary tract symptoms associated with BPH (LUTS/BPH) in actual clinical practice settings. PATIENTS AND METHODS Men with LUTS/BPH who were either untreated or treated with Α 1 -adrenergic blockers (ABs), 5Α-reductase inhibitors (5ARIs), a combination of these medications, or anticholinergics, and who met selection criteria, were enrolled at sites throughout the USA. At each visit, standardized forms and validated questionnaires were completed to assess the physicians’ management practices and patients’ clinical characteristics, sexual function, and health-related quality of life. RESULTS At the close of recruitment (February 2005), 6909 men (mean age 66.0 years) were enrolled at 402 sites by urologists and primary-care physicians. Before enrolment, 49% of the men were managed with watchful waiting (WW), 21% with uroselective AB monotherapy, 11% with non-uroselective AB monotherapy, 6% with 5ARI monotherapy, 11% with AB + 5ARI, and 2% with anticholinergics. After enrolment, 42% were on WW and 26% were on selective AB monotherapy; changes in other management groups were minimal. Overall, 33% of the men had mild, 52% had moderate and 15% had severe LUTS. The most common comorbidities were hypertension (53%), high cholesterol (45%) and sexual dysfunction (36%). CONCLUSION The BPH Registry and Patient Survey will provide information on physician management practices and outcomes of men with LUTS/BPH, while examining the effects of demographics, socio-economics, comorbidities, and medical therapies.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73286/1/j.1464-410X.2007.07061.x.pd

    Conceptualising a visual culture curriculum for Greek art education

    This research contributes to the current debate about the need to redefine the goals and content of art education. The aim was to establish whether or not visual culture should be introduced into the school curriculum at primary level in Greece and if so how. It began with a review of international literature conducted to determine the current state of knowledge about visual culture education and an analysis of recent reforms to the Greek art curriculum. This led to the development of a theoretical framework for the empirical research in Greece and a working definition of visual culture education. The research had two parts. In the first part, the researcher conducted group interviews with Greek children, aged between 6 and 12, for the purposes of establishing their preferences for visual culture genres and their understanding of everyday images as a learning resource. The findings were that these children were aware that they lived in and interacted with visual images in the real world; they preferred looking at television imagery, but did not fully comprehend how they influenced their identity construction. In the second part, the researcher introduced visual culture education content and methods into art lessons in Greece. She conducted an educational intervention in two primary school classrooms over a period of five weeks using an experimental curriculum entitled ‘Deconstructing Television Imagery’. The evaluation found that the curriculum focus on telenovelas and Barbie animated films motivated learners to participate in art lessons and extended their understanding of these visual culture genres and how they impact on viewers’ lives. A conclusion reached at the end of the research was that the primary school curriculum in Greece should include visual culture. Visual culture education should take into account the particularities of Greek students’ visual experiences and of Greek art education and culture. Consequently it should include fine arts, mass media and material culture, performing arts and the arts of spectacle.     The powers in PowerPoint: Embedded authorities, documentary tastes, and institutional (second) orders in corporate Korea

    Microsoft PowerPoint is both the bane and banality of contemporary South Korean office work. Corporate workers spend countless hours refining and crafting plans, proposals, and reports in PowerPoint that often lead to conflicts with coworkers and overtime work. This article theorizes the excessive attention to documents in modern office contexts. Where scholars have been under the impression that institutional documents align with institutional purposes, I describe a context in which making documents for individual purposes and making them for work exist under a basic tension. Based on fieldwork in corporate Korea between 2013 and 2015, I describe how Korean office workers calibrate documents to the tastes of superiors who populate the managerial chain. These practices leave little trace of real "work" on paper, but they are productive for navigating complex internal labor markets and demonstrating a higher order value of attention toward others. These findings suggest that institutional and individual authorities are not competing projects inside organizations but become entangled in increasingly complex participatory encounters, even as they are channeled through a seemingly simple software like PowerPoint.     Work-Unit Absenteeism: Effects of Satisfaction, Commitment, Labor Market Conditions, and Time

    Prior research is limited in explaining absenteeism at the unit level and over time. We developed and tested a model of unit-level absenteeism using five waves of data collected over six years from 115 work units in a large state agency. Unit-level job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and local unemployment were modeled as time-varying predictors of absenteeism. Shared satisfaction and commitment interacted in predicting absenteeism but were not related to the rate of change in absenteeism over time. Unit-level satisfaction and commitment were more strongly related to absenteeism when units were located in areas with plentiful job alternatives

    Patient-provider communication regarding drug costsin Medicare Part D beneficiaries with diabetes: a TRIAD Study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Little is known about drug cost communications of Medicare Part D beneficiaries with chronic conditions such as diabetes. The purpose of this study is to assess Medicare Part D beneficiaries with diabetes' levels of communication with physicians regarding prescription drug costs; the perceived importance of these communications; levels of prescription drug switching due to cost; and self-reported cost-related medication non-adherence.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey (58% response rate) of 1,458 Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes who entered the coverage gap in 2006; adjusted percentages of patients with communication issues were obtained from multivariate regression analyses adjusting for patient demographics and clinical characteristics.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Fewer than half of patients reported discussing the cost of medications with their physicians, while over 75% reported that such communications were important. Forty-eight percent reported their physician had switched to a less expensive medication due to costs. Minorities, females, and older adults had significantly lower levels of communication with their physicians regarding drug costs than white, male, and younger patients respectively. Patients with < $25 K annual household income were more likely than higher income patients to have talked about prescription drug costs with doctors, and to report cost-related non-adherence (27% vs. 17%, p < .001).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Medicare Part D beneficiaries with diabetes who entered the coverage gap have low levels of communication with physicians about drug costs, despite the high perceived importance of such communication. Understanding patient and plan-level characteristics differences in communication and use of cost-cutting strategies can inform interventions to help patients manage prescription drug costs.</p

    Schools, families, and social reproduction

    Neoliberal educational discourse across the Global North is marked by an increasing homogeneity, but this masks significant socio-spatial differences in the enactment of policy. The authors focus on four facets of roll-out neoliberalism in English education policy that have expanded the function of primary schools, and redrawn the boundary between state and family responsibilities. Specifically, these are increased state support for: (1) working parenthood through provision of wraparound childcare; (2) parent-child relationships through school-led provision of parenting classes; (3) parental involvement in children’s learning; and (4) child development through schools’ fostering of extracurricular activities. The politics of policies that both enhance state responsibility for, and influence in, matters that were previously within the purview of families are complex. The collective impact of these developments has been both to reform how the work of daily and generational social reproduction is done, and to reshape the social reproduction of a classed and gendered society
