    Results from the Scottish report card on physical activity for children and youth

    The Active Healthy Kids Scotland Report Card aims to consolidate existing evidence, facilitate international comparisons, encourage more evidence-informed physical activity and health policy, and improve surveillance of physical activity. Application of the Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card process and methodology to Scotland, adapted to Scottish circumstances and availability of data. The Active Healthy Kids Scotland Report Card 2013 consists of indicators of 7 Health Behaviors and Outcomes and 3 Influences on Health Behaviors and Outcomes. Grades of F were assigned to Overall Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior (recreational screen time), and Obesity Prevalence. A C was assigned to Active Transportation and a D- was assigned to Diet. Two indicators, Active and Outdoor Play and Organized Sport Participation, could not be graded. Among the Influences, Family Influence received a D, while Perceived Safety, Access, and Availability of Spaces for Physical Activity and the National Policy Environment graded more favorably with a B. The Active Healthy Kids Canada process and methodology was readily generalizable to Scotland. The report card illustrated low habitual physical activity and extremely high levels of screen-based sedentary behavior, and highlighted several opportunities for improved physical activity surveillance and promotion strategies

    This article will demonstrate that the inconsistency is, to a large extent, more apparent than real and results from the application of two different conceptions of the purpose of the program to the same facts. Furthermore, it will be demonstrated that Detroit\u27s Building (housing) Code has failed in its attempt to force rehabilitation of residential structures through Code enforcement. Although it can be made to work more efficiently, the Code will never serve as an effective solution to the housing problem

    Microbial iron uptake as a mechanism for dispersing iron from deep-sea hydrothermal vents

Although hydrothermal iron rapidly precipitates as inorganic minerals upon mixing with seawater, it can be stabilized by organic matter and dispersed more widely than previously recognized. The nature and source of this organic matter is unknown. Here we show that microbial genes involved in cellular iron uptake are highly expressed in the Guaymas Basin deep-sea hydrothermal plume. The nature of these microbial iron transporters, taken together with the low concentration of dissolved iron and abundance of particulate iron in the plume, indicates that iron minerals are the target for this microbial scavenging and uptake. Our findings indicate that cellular iron uptake is a major process in plume microbial communities and suggest new mechanisms for generating Fe-C complexes.     Transduction of Human CD34+CD38- Bone Marrow and Cord Blood-Derived SCID-Repopulating Cells with Third-Generation Lentiviral Vectors

    The major limitations of Moloney murine leukemia virus (MoMLV)-based vectors for human stem cell applications, particularly those requiring bone marrow (BM) stem cells, include their requirement for mitosis and retroviral receptor expression. New vectors based upon lentiviruses such as HIV-1 exhibit properties that may circumvent these problems. We report that novel third-generation, self-inactivating lentiviral vectors, expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) and pseudotyped with vesicular stomatitis virus G glycoprotein (VSV-G), can efficiently transduce primitive human repopulating cells derived from human BM and cord blood (CB) tested by the SCID-repopulating cell (SRC) assay. Highly purified CD34+CD38- CB or BM cells were efficiently transduced (4-69%) and stably expressed in EGFP for 40 days in culture following infection for only 24 h without fibronectin, polybrene, or cytokines. Nonobese diabetic/severe combined immune-deficient (NOD/SCID) mice transplanted with transduced cells from either CB or BM donors were well engrafted, demonstrating maintenance of SRC during the infection procedure. Serially obtained femoral BM samples indicated that the proportion of EGFP+ cells within both myeloid and lymphoid lineages was maintained or even increased over time, averaging 42.3 ± 6.6% for BM donors and 23.3 ± 7.2% for CB at 12 weeks. Thus, the third-generation lentivectors readily transduce human CB and BM stem cells, under minimal conditions of ex vivo culture, where MoMLV-based vectors are ineffective. Since CB is inappropriate for most therapeutic applications, the efficient maintenance and transduction of BM-derived SRC during the short infection procedure are notable advantages of lentivectors

    Developmental mediation of genetic variation in response to the Fast Track Prevention Program

    We conducted a developmental analysis of genetic moderation of the effect of the Fast Track intervention on adult externalizing psychopathology. The Fast Track intervention enrolled 891 children at high risk to develop externalizing behavior problems when they were in kindergarten. Half of the enrolled children were randomly assigned to receive 10 years of treatment, with a range of services and resources provided to the children and their families, and the other half to usual care (controls). We previously showed that the effect of the Fast Track intervention on participants\u27 risk of externalizing psychopathology at age 25 years was moderated by a variant in the glucocorticoid receptor gene. Children who carried copies of the A allele of the single nucleotide polymorphism rs10482672 had the highest risk of externalizing psychopathology if they were in the control arm of the trial and the lowest risk of externalizing psychopathology if they were in the treatment arm. In this study, we test a developmental hypothesis about the origins of this for better and for worse Gene Ă— Intervention interaction (G Ă— I): that the observed G Ă— I effect on adult psychopathology is mediated by the proximal impact of intervention on childhood externalizing problems and adolescent substance use and delinquency. We analyzed longitudinal data tracking the 270 European American children in the Fast Track randomized control trial with available genetic information (129 intervention children, 141 control group peers, 69% male) from kindergarten through age 25 years. Results show that the same pattern of for better and for worse susceptibility to intervention observed at the age 25 follow-up was evident already during childhood. At the elementary school follow-ups and at the middle/high school follow-ups, rs10482672 predicted better adjustment among children receiving the Fast Track intervention and worse adjustment among children in the control condition. In turn, these proximal G Ă— I effects early in development mediated the ultimate G Ă— I effect on externalizing psychopathology at age 25 years. We discuss the contribution of these findings to the growing literature on genetic susceptibility to environmental intervention

    We examine the effect of a more realistic Earth matter density model which takes into account of the local density variations along the baseline of a possi ble 2100 km very long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its influence to the measurement of CP violation is investigated and a comparison with the commonly used global density models made.
