    Transitioning From Relational to Nosql: a Case Study

    Data storage requirements have increased dramatically in recent years due to the explosion in data volumes brought about by the Web 2.0 era. Changing priorities for database system requirements has seen NoSQL databases emerge as an alternative to relational database systems that have dominated this market for over 40 years. Web-enabled, always on applications mean availability of the database system is critically important as any downtime can translate in to unrecoverable financial loss. Cost is also hugely important in this era where credit is difficult to obtain and organizations look to get the maximum from their IT infrastructure from the least amount of investment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current NoSQL market and assess its suitability as an alternative to a relational database. The research will look at a case study of a bulletin board application that uses a relational database for data storage and evaluate how such an application can be converted to using a NoSQL database. This case study will also be used to assess the performance attributes of a NoSQL database when implemented on a low cost hardware platform. The findings will provide insight to those who are considering making the switch from a relational database system to a NoSQL database system

    Evaluation of Condensed Algal Residue Solubles as an Ingredient in Cattle Finishing Diets

    A study was conducted to evaluate feeding 0, 2.5, or 5.0% of a novel liquid feed, Condensed Algal Residue Solubles (CARS), in one of two base diets with CARS replacing corn. ! e two base diets were fed to mimic Northern Great Plains (high moisture and dry rolled corn blend fed with wet distillers grains plus solubles) and Southern Great Plains (steam- flaked corn and dry distillers grains plus solubles) feedlot diets. ! ere were no interactions between base diet and CARS inclusion. Feed intake and longissimus muscle area decreased as CARS inclusion increased in the diet. A quadratic effect was shown for average daily gain, feed efficiency, final adjusted body weight, hot carcass weight, 12th rib fat, and yield grade, increasing as CARS was included up to 2.5% of diet dry matter, then decreased at 5% inclusion. Marbling score improved with increased inclusion of CARS, with the highest score at 5% CARS inclusion. Including CARS at 2.5% of diet dry matter improved feed efficiency in both Northern and Southern Great Plains diets

    Methodological Challenges in Describing Medication Dosing Errors in Children

    Summary: Although children are prescribed medications in 30 percent to 50 percent of clinic visits, little is known about medication errors in ambulatory pediatrics. In the process of completing a study to determine the prevalence of outpatient dosing errors, we identified a number of barriers to understanding the epidemiology of medication errors in children. These barriers include prescribing medication that is not labeled for use in children, discrepancies in published dosing recommendations for many medications, unclear guidelines on use of adult dosing recommendations for children of different ages and weights, and the lack of readily available documented weights to determine appropriate weight-based doses for children. In our study of pediatric medication errors, we found a wide range of doses prescribed to children for every medication we studied. Before we can truly understand medication errors in children and begin developing systems-based approaches to eliminating these errors, we need better national standards of medication doses that are appropriate for children and an improved ability to determine errors through databases that include children\u27s weights as well as prescription information

    One-dimensional metal-organic framework photonic crystals used as platforms for vapor sorption.

    We present the fabrication of one-dimensional photonic crystals (Bragg stacks) based on a microporous metal–organic framework material and mesoporous titanium dioxide. The Bragg stack heterostructures were obtained using two complementary synthesis approaches utilizing the bottom-up assembly of heterogeneous, i.e. two-component photonic crystal multilayer structures. Zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 and mesoporous titanium dioxide were chosen as functional components with different refractive indices. While ZIF-8 is intended to impart molecular selectivity, mesoporous TiO2 is used to ensure high refractive index contrast and to guarantee molecular diffusion within the Bragg stack. The combination of micro- and mesoporosity within one scaffold endows the 1D-MOF PC with characteristic adsorption properties upon exposure to various organic vapors. In this context, the sorption behavior of the photonic material was studied as a function of partial pressure of organic vapors. The results show that the multilayered photonic heterostructures are sensitive and selective towards a series of chemically similar solvent vapors. It is thus anticipated that the concept of multilayer heterogeneous photonic structures will provide a versatile platform for future selective, label-free optical sensors
