Determinants of Public Funding for Professional Athletic Venues
This paper examines the financing of professional athletic venues and why certain franchises are able to obtain high percentages of overall stadium funding from the public. Existing literature shows the negligible effect of new athletic venues on the local economy and per capita income, and therefore the benefits from such a project are largely intangible. I use an ordinary least squares regression and show that the more successful a team is the less public funding they tend to receive. I also find that broad city statistics do not represent the specific areas that policy makers consider when making decisions about spending public money
Narrow-line Laser Cooling by Adiabatic Transfer
We propose and demonstrate a novel laser cooling mechanism applicable to
particles with narrow-linewidth optical transitions. By sweeping the frequency
of counter-propagating laser beams in a sawtooth manner, we cause adiabatic
transfer back and forth between the ground state and a long-lived optically
excited state. The time-ordering of these adiabatic transfers is determined by
Doppler shifts, which ensures that the associated photon recoils are in the
opposite direction to the particle's motion. This ultimately leads to a robust
cooling mechanism capable of exerting large forces via a weak transition and
with reduced reliance on spontaneous emission. We present a simple intuitive
model for the resulting frictional force, and directly demonstrate its efficacy
for increasing the total phase-space density of an atomic ensemble. We rely on
both simulation and experimental studies using the 7.5~kHz linewidth S
to P transition in Sr. The reduced reliance on spontaneous
emission may allow this adiabatic sweep method to be a useful tool for cooling
particles that lack closed cycling transitions, such as molecules.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
SCUBA - A submillimetre camera operating on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope
The Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) is one of a new
generation of cameras designed to operate in the submillimetre waveband. The
instrument has a wide wavelength range covering all the atmospheric
transmission windows between 300 and 2000 microns. In the heart of the
instrument are two arrays of bolometers optimised for the short (350/450
microns) and long (750/850 microns) wavelength ends of the submillimetre
spectrum. The two arrays can be used simultaneously, giving a unique
dual-wavelength capability, and have a 2.3 arc-minute field of view on the sky.
Background-limited performance is achieved by cooling the arrays to below 100
mK. SCUBA has now been in active service for over a year, and has already made
substantial breakthroughs in many areas of astronomy. In this paper we present

Emerging Disparities among Self-Pay Trauma Patients
Preliminary results from a study of trauma patients in Southern Nevada are yielding some unexpected findings with implications for both trauma centers and the growing Hispanic population. Hispanic patients are more likely to be self pay irrespective of income level and employment status when compared to non-Hispanic patient groups. Further, self pay Hispanics, unlike their non-Hispanic, self pay counterparts, tend to be employed, have families, and report stable living conditions. The implication is that the financial and social cost of traumatic injury may place a significant burden on trauma centers, patients, their families and the community
Information about bank intangibles, analyst information intermediation, and the role of knowledge and social forces in the âmarket for informationâ
Although developments in the sell-side analyst literature have revealed the role of intellectual capital (IC) in analystsâ work, the whole information intermediation progress of IC remains a âblack boxâ. This paper develops an analyst information intermediation model, illustrating how âsoftâ information changes through analyst acquisition, processing and disclosure of information. Bourdieuâs ideas of habitus, field and capital are used to develop our explanation of the analyst information intermediation model. We argue that the combination of empirical evidence and theoretical explanation provides a new and more comprehensive way to improve understanding of the role of analysts within knowledge and social contexts
A Database of Cepheid Distance Moduli and TRGB, GCLF, PNLF and SBF Data Useful for Distance Determinations
We present a compilation of Cepheid distance moduli and data for four
secondary distance indicators that employ stars in the old stellar populations:
the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF), the globular cluster
luminosity function (GCLF), the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), and the
surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) method. The database includes all data
published as of July 15, 1999. The main strength of this compilation resides in
all data being on a consistent and homogeneous system: all Cepheid distances
are derived using the same calibration of the period-luminosity relation, the
treatment of errors is consistent for all indicators, measurements which are
not considered reliable are excluded. As such, the database is ideal for
inter-comparing any of the distance indicators considered, or for deriving a
Cepheid calibration to any secondary distance indicator. Specifically, the
database includes: 1) Cepheid distances, extinctions and metallicities; 2)
apparent magnitudes of the PNLF cutoff; 3) apparent magnitudes and colors of
the turnover of the GCLF (both in the V- and B-bands); 4) apparent magnitudes
of the TRGB (in the I-band) and V-I colors at and 0.5 magnitudes fainter than
the TRGB; 5) apparent surface brightness fluctuation magnitudes I, K', K_short,
and using the F814W filter with the HST/WFPC2. In addition, for every galaxy in
the database we give reddening estimates from DIRBE/IRAS as well as HI maps,
J2000 coordinates, Hubble and T-type morphological classification, apparent
