    Student Academic Representatives: we did it our way

    Worcester Business School (WBS) responded pro-actively to the University led changes to the StARs system and the introduction of Institute Reps. The move to City Campus flagged up the possibility of a period of isolation and detachment for the students. Staff therefore took a pro-active approach in ensuring that the student voice was heard loud and clear. WBS therefore instigated a system whereby there would be a dedicated academic contact for the undergraduate StARs irrespective of their course of study. The University actively encourages feedback from students so we are keen to ensure the results of this feedback are relayed back to the other students, effectively closing the loop. This session will outline our approach taken since 2010 in an attempt to avoid any bottlenecks in future communication. It is envisaged that this session will result in a portfolio of good practice for dissemination across Institutes

    This paper focuses on the influencing factors of individual students who remain at the same University for their postgraduate study. By interviewing students on an MSc Management course, we found some interesting motivations about where to continue studying a taught postgraduate course. These factors included such issues as the importance of developing and maintaining personal effective relationships, peer group influence and a sense of belonging

    Developing children’s motor skills in the Foundation Phase in Wales to support physical literacy

    Interest has grown internationally in the concept of physical literacy [Dudley, D. 2015. “A Conceptual Model of Observed Physical Literacy.” The Physical Educator 72: 236–260; Edwards, L., A. Bryant, R. Keegan, K. Morgan, and A. Jones. 2017. “Definitions, Foundations and Associations of Physical Literacy: A systematic Review.” Sports Medicine 47 (1): 113–126] acknowledging holistic embodied learning. This notion of embodied learning resonates with the play based approach of the Foundation Phase in Wales for children aged 3–7. With early childhood being the optimum age for developing Fundamental Motor skills, the primary purpose of this paper is to describe a programme (SKIP-Cymru) for developing pupils’ motor skills in the Foundation Phase. Drawing on Successful Kinaesthetic Instruction for Pre-schoolers (SKIP) [Goodway, J. D., and C. F. Branta. 2003. “Influence of a Motor Skill Intervention on Fundamental Motor Skill Development of Disadvantaged Preschool Children.” Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport 74 (1): 36–46] and playful pedagogy [Howard, J., and K. McInnes. 2010. “Thinking Through the Challenge of a Play-based Curriculum, Increasing Playfulness via Co-construction.” In Thinking about play, edited by J. R. Moyles. Berkshire: Open University Press], SKIP-Cymru combines advocacy with leadership, training and mentoring for staff and parental engagement. Early exploratory data from an initial evaluation suggest SKIP-Cymru is a positive experience for staff and parents which improves pupils’ motor competence in both locomotor and object control skills. Limitations of the research design are discussed along with implications for future research

    HIV-1 gp120 Mannoses Induce Immunosuppressive Responses from Dendritic Cells

    The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) envelope glycoprotein gp120 is a vaccine immunogen that can signal via several cell surface receptors. To investigate whether receptor biology could influence immune responses to gp120, we studied its interaction with human, monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MDDCs) in vitro. Gp120 from the HIV-1 strain JR-FL induced IL-10 expression in MDDCs from 62% of donors, via a mannose C-type lectin receptor(s) (MCLR). Gp120 from the strain LAI was also an IL-10 inducer, but gp120 from the strain KNH1144 was not. The mannose-binding protein cyanovirin-N, the 2G12 mAb to a mannose-dependent gp120 epitope, and MCLR-specific mAbs inhibited IL-10 expression, as did enzymatic removal of gp120 mannose moieties, whereas inhibitors of signaling via CD4, CCR5, or CXCR4 were ineffective. Gp120-stimulated IL-10 production correlated with DC-SIGN expression on the cells, and involved the ERK signaling pathway. Gp120-treated MDDCs also responded poorly to maturation stimuli by up-regulating activation markers inefficiently and stimulating allogeneic T cell proliferation only weakly. These adverse reactions to gp120 were MCLR-dependent but independent of IL-10 production. Since such mechanisms might suppress immune responses to Env-containing vaccines, demannosylation may be a way to improve the immunogenicity of gp120 or gp140 proteins

    Effects of dietary salt on gene and protein expression in brain tissue of a model of sporadic small vessel disease

    Background: The effect of salt on cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) is poorly understood. We assessed the effect of dietary salt on the cerebral tissue of the strokeprone spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHRSP) - a relevant model of sporadic SVD - at both the gene and protein level. Methods: Brains from 21 week old SHRSP and Wistar-Kyoto rats, half additionally salt-loaded (via a 3 week regime of 1% NaCl in drinking water) were split into 2 hemispheres and sectioned coronally – one hemisphere for mRNA microarray and qRT-PCR, the other for immunohistochemistry using a panel of antibodies targeting components of the neurovascular unit. Results: We observed differences in gene and protein expression affecting the acute phase pathway and oxidative stress (ALB, AMBP, APOH, AHSG and LOC100129193, up-regulated in salt-loaded WKY versus WKY, >2-fold), active microglia (increased Iba-1 protein expression in salt-loaded SHRSP versus saltloaded WKY, p<0.05), vascular structure (ACTB & CTNNB, up-regulated in saltloaded SHRSP versus SHRSP, >3-fold; CLDN-11,VEGF and VGF downregulated >- 2-fold in salt-loaded SHRSP versus SHRSP) and myelin integrity (MBP downregulated in salt loaded WKY rats versus WKY, >2.5-fold). Changes of salt-loading were more pronounced in SHRSP and occurred without an increase in blood pressure in WKY rats. Conclusion: Salt exposure induced changes in gene and protein expression in an experimental model of SVD and its parent rat strain in multiple pathways involving components of the glio-vascular unit. Further studies in pertinent experimental models at different ages would help clarify the short and long-term effect of dietary salt in SVD

    Serum neurofilament dynamics predicts neurodegeneration and clinical progression in presymptomatic Alzheimer's disease

    Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a promising fluid biomarker of disease progression for various cerebral proteopathies. Here we leverage the unique characteristics of the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network and ultrasensitive immunoassay technology to demonstrate that NfL levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (n = 187) and serum (n = 405) are correlated with one another and are elevated at the presymptomatic stages of familial Alzheimer's disease. Longitudinal, within-person analysis of serum NfL dynamics (n = 196) confirmed this elevation and further revealed that the rate of change of serum NfL could discriminate mutation carriers from non-mutation carriers almost a decade earlier than cross-sectional absolute NfL levels (that is, 16.2 versus 6.8 years before the estimated symptom onset). Serum NfL rate of change peaked in participants converting from the presymptomatic to the symptomatic stage and was associated with cortical thinning assessed by magnetic resonance imaging, but less so with amyloid-β deposition or glucose metabolism (assessed by positron emission tomography). Serum NfL was predictive for both the rate of cortical thinning and cognitive changes assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination and Logical Memory test. Thus, NfL dynamics in serum predict disease progression and brain neurodegeneration at the early presymptomatic stages of familial Alzheimer's disease, which supports its potential utility as a clinically useful biomarker

    The implementation of medical revalidation: an assessment using normalisation process theory

    Abstract Background Medical revalidation is the process by which all licensed doctors are legally required to demonstrate that they are up to date and fit to practise in order to maintain their licence. Revalidation was introduced in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2012, constituting significant change in the regulation of doctors. The governing body, the General Medical Council (GMC), envisages that revalidation will improve patient care and safety. This potential however is, in part, dependent upon how successfully revalidation is embedded into routine practice. The aim of this study was to use Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) to explore issues contributing to or impeding the implementation of revalidation in practice. Methods We conducted seventy-one interviews with sixty UK policymakers and senior leaders at different points during the development and implementation of revalidation: in 2011 (n = 31), 2013 (n = 26) and 2015 (n = 14). We selected interviewees using purposeful sampling. NPT was used as a framework to enable systematic analysis across the interview sets. Results Initial lack of consensus over revalidation’s purpose, and scepticism about its value, decreased over time as participants recognised the benefits it brought to their practice (coherence category of NPT). Though acceptance increased across time, revalidation was not seen as a legitimate part of their role by all doctors. Key individuals, notably the Responsible Officer (RO), were vital for the successful implementation of revalidation in organisations (cognitive participation category). The ease with which revalidation could be integrated into working practices varied greatly depending on the type of role a doctor held and the organisation they work for and the provision of resources was a significant variable in this (collective action category). Formal evaluation of revalidation in organisations was lacking but informal evaluation was taking place. Revalidation had not yet reached the stage where feedback was being used for improvement (reflexive monitoring category). Conclusions Requiring all organisations to use the same revalidation model made revalidation easy to integrate into existing work for some but problematic for others. In order for revalidation to be fully embedded and successful, impeding factors, such as a lack of resources, need to be addressed
