    A SYSTEM DYNAMICS MODEL OF AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT: THE TOPMARD CORE MODEL

    The goal of the TOPMARD project is to develop a model of agriculture and rural development to better understand the agronomic, ecological, economic and social dimensions of rural regions. The resulting model, (Policy Model of Multifunctional Agriculture and Rural Development) was built collaboratively and hierarchically by the research teams from the 11 countries. The model features eight subsectors (Land, Agriculture, Tourism, Region, Human Resources, Non-commodities, Capital, and Quality of Life). Imbedded in the model are a complete dynamic input-output model, and an agecohort education demographic model. The model has both supply-side and demand-side drivers. Land use is the key supply-side driver. Land use, coupled with production system choices, determine agricultural and non-commodity outputs.     Gastrointestinal dysfunction in the critically ill: can we measure it?

    Gastrointestinal dysfunction is an intuitively important, yet descriptively elusive component of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Reintam and colleagues have attempted to quantify this dimension using a combination of intolerance of enteral feeding, and the development of intra-abdominal hypertension. While they show that both parameters are associated with an increased risk of death (and therefore that, in combination, the risk of death is even greater), they fall short in developing a novel descriptor of gastrointestinal dysfunction. Nonetheless, and even with its shortcomings, their effort is a welcome contribution to the surprisingly complex process of describing the morbidity of critical illness

    The solubility pump of carbon in the subtropical gyre of the North Atlantic

    The subduction of carbon is examined using abiotic models of the solubility pump in the subtropical gyre of the North Atlantic. The importance of the seasonal cycle of the mixed layer, and advection of carbon, is examined using sensitivity experiments with a Lagrangian model of the carbon system. The rate of subduction of carbon is found to be strongly influenced by the gradients in mixed-layer thickness over the gyre and, to a lesser extent, modified by the end of winter bias in the properties of subducted fluid. A seasonally-cycling geochemical model of the carbon system is then developed for the North Atlantic. The model is diagnosed to examine the seasonal exchange in carbon between the atmosphere and ocean induced by the seasonal warming and cooling. There is a net annual air-sea flux of carbon into the subtropical gyre of the model due to undersaturation of pco2 with respect to the local equilibrium with the atmosphere. The undersaturation is due to advection of carbon by the circulation. Along the path of the Gulf Stream, northward advection and cooling of the low latitude waters is so rapid that the surface waters are significantly undersaturated in carbon. Due to its long equilibration period, there is a resultant air-sea flux of carbon dioxide over the northern flank and interior of the subtropical gyre. Warm, low carbon water from the tropics is fluxed into the southern flank of the subtropical gyre in the Ekman layer, inducing an oceanic uptake of carbon there. The model experiments suggest that it is necessary to account for advection to close the carbon budget in the observed time-series measurements at Bermuda

    Online, interactive user guidance for high-dimensional, constrained motion planning

    We consider the problem of planning a collision-free path for a high-dimensional robot. Specifically, we suggest a planning framework where a motion-planning algorithm can obtain guidance from a user. In contrast to existing approaches that try to speed up planning by incorporating experiences or demonstrations ahead of planning, we suggest to seek user guidance only when the planner identifies that it ceases to make significant progress towards the goal. Guidance is provided in the form of an intermediate configuration q^\hat{q}, which is used to bias the planner to go through q^\hat{q}. We demonstrate our approach for the case where the planning algorithm is Multi-Heuristic A* (MHA*) and the robot is a 34-DOF humanoid. We show that our approach allows to compute highly-constrained paths with little domain knowledge. Without our approach, solving such problems requires carefully-crafting domain-dependent heuristics

    Anisotropic Small-Polaron Hopping In W:Bivo4 Single Crystals

    DC electrical conductivity, Seebeck and Hall coefficients are measured between 300 and 450 K on single crystals of monoclinic bismuth vanadate that are doped n-type with 0.3% tungsten donors (W:BiVO4). Strongly activated small-polaron hopping is implied by the activation energies of the Arrhenius conductivities (about 300 meV) greatly exceeding the energies characterizing the falls of the Seebeck coefficients' magnitudes with increasing temperature (about 50 meV). Small-polaron hopping is further evidenced by the measured Hall mobility in the ab-plane (10(-1) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) at 300 K) being larger and much less strongly activated than the deduced drift mobility (about 5 x 10(-5) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) at 300 K). The conductivity and n-type Seebeck coefficient is found to be anisotropic with the conductivity larger and the Seebeck coefficient's magnitude smaller and less temperature dependent for motion within the ab-plane than that in the c-direction. These anisotropies are addressed by considering highly anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor (approximate to 5 angstrom) transfers in addition to the somewhat shorter (approximate to 4 angstrom), nearly isotropic nearest-neighbor transfers.     Physics of windblown particles

    A laboratory facility proposed for the Space Station to investigate fundamental aspects of windblown particles is described. The experiments would take advantage of the environment afforded in earth orbit and would be an extension of research currently being conducted on the geology and physics of windblown sediments on earth, Mars, and Venus. Aeolian (wind) processes are reviewed in the planetary context, the scientific rational is given for specific experiments to be conducted, the experiment apparatus (the Carousel Wind Tunnel, or CWT) is described, and a plan presented for implementing the proposed research program
