    HI Emission and Absorption in the Southern Galactic Plane Survey

    We present preliminary results from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS) Test Region and Parkes data. As part of the pilot project for the Southern Galactic Plane Survey, observations of a Test Region (325.5 deg < l < 333.5 deg; -0.5 deg < b < 3.5 deg) were completed in December 1998. Single dish observations of the full survey region (253 deg < l < 358 deg; |b| <1 deg) with the Parkes Radio Telescope were completed in March 2000. We present a sample of SGPS HI data with particular attention to the smallest and largest scale structures seen in absorption and emission, respectively. On the large scale, we detect many prominent HI shells. On the small scale, we note extremely compact, cold clouds seen in HI self-absorption. We explore how these two classes of objects probe opposite ends of the HI spatial power spectrum.Comment: 9 pages, 3 embedded postscript & 4 jpeg figures.     Detection of Cold Atomic Clouds in the Magellanic Bridge

    We report a detection of cold atomic hydrogen in the Magellanic Bridge using 21-cm absorption spectroscopy toward the radio source B0312-770. With a column density of N_HI=1.2E20 cm^-2, a maximum absorption optical depth of tau=0.10 and a maximum 21-cm emission brightness temperature of 1.4 K, this line of sight yields a spin temperature, T_s, between 20 K and 40 K. H I 21-cm absorption and emission spectroscopy toward 7 other low column density sightlines on the periphery of the LMC and SMC reveal absorption toward one additional background radio source behind the SMC with tau=0.03. The data have typical sensitivities of sigma_tau=0.005 to 0.070 in absorption and sigma_{T_B}=0.03 K in emission. These data demonstrate the presence of a cold atomic phase which is probably accompanied by molecular condensations in the tenuous interstellar medium of the Bridge region. Young OB stars observed in the Magellanic Bridge could form "in situ" from these cold condensations rather than migrate from regions of active star formation in the main body of the SMC. The existence of cold condensations and star formation in the Magellanic Bridge might be understood as a small scale version of the mechanism that produces star formation in the tidal tails of interacting galaxies.Comment: 25 pages, uses AASTeX and psfig; Accepted for Publication in the Astronomical Journa

    Ghost of a Shell: Magnetic Fields of Galactic Supershell GSH 006-15++7

    We identify a counterpart to a Galactic supershell in diffuse radio polarisation, and use this to determine the magnetic fields associated with this object. GSH 006-15++7 has perturbed the polarised emission at 2.3\,GHz, as observed in the S-band Polarisation All Sky Survey (S-PASS), acting as a Faraday screen. We model the Faraday rotation over the shell, and produce a map of Faraday depth over the area across it. Such models require information about the polarised emission behind the screen, which we obtain from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), scaled from 23\,GHz to 2.3\,GHz, to estimate the synchrotron background behind GSH 006-15++7. Using the modelled Faraday thickness we determine the magnitude and the plane-of-the-sky structure of the line-of-sight magnetic field in the shell. We find a peak line-of-sight field strength of Bpeak=2.0+0.010.7μ|B_\parallel|_\text{peak} = 2.0\substack{+0.01 \\ -0.7}\,\muG. Our measurement probes weak magnetic fields in a low-density regime (number densities of 0.4\sim0.4\,cm3^{-3}) of the ISM, thus providing crucial information about the magnetic fields in the partially-ionised phase.Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. 19 pages, 19 figure

    Determination of Galaxy Spin Vectors in the Pisces-Perseus Supercluster with the Arecibo Telescope

    We use HI observations made with the upgraded Arecibo 305M Telescope in August 1998 to obtain accurate spin vector determinations for 54 nearly edge-on galaxies in the Minnesota Automated Plate Scanner Pisces-Perseus Survey (MAPS-PP). We introduce a simple observational technique of determining the sense of rotation for galaxies, even when their HI disks are not fully resolved. We examined the spin vector distribution of these 54 galaxies for evidence of preferential galaxy alignments. We use the Kuiper statistic, a variant of the Kolmogorov--Smirnov statistic, to determine the significance of any anisotropies in the distribution of galaxy spin vectors. The possibility of ``spin vector domains'' is also investigated. We find no significant evidence of preferential galaxy alignments in this sample. However, we show tha t the small sample size places weak limits on the level of galaxy alignments.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for Publication in Astronomical Journa

    Detection of OH absorption against PSR B1849+00

    We have searched for OH absorption against seven pulsars using the Arecibo telescope. In both OH mainlines (at 1665 and 1667 MHz), deep and narrow absorption features were detected toward PSR B1849+00. In addition, we have detected several absorption and emission features against B33.6+0.1, a nearby supernova remnant (SNR). The most interesting result of this study is that a pencil-sharp absorption sample against the PSR differs greatly from the large-angle absorption sample observed against the SNR. If both the PSR and the SNR probe the same molecular cloud then this finding has important implications for absorption studies of the molecular medium, as it shows that the statistics of absorbing OH depends on the size of the background source. We also show that the OH absorption against the PSR most likely originates from a small (<30 arcsec) and dense (>10^5 cm^-3) molecular clump.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures.     The Space Geodesy Project (SGP) development by NASA is an effort to co-locate the four international geodetic techniques Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) and Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR), Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), and Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) into one tightly referenced campus and coordinated reference frame analysis. The SGP requirement locates these stations within a small area to maintain line-of-sight and frequent automated survey known as the vector tie system. This causes a direct conflict with the new broadband VLBI technique. Broadband means 2-14 GHz, and RFI susceptibility at -80 dBW or higher due to sensitive RF components in the front end of the radio receiver

    The australia telescope compact array HI survey of the galactic center

    We present a survey of atomic hydrogen (H I) emission in the direction of the Galactic Center (GC) conducted with the CSIRO Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The survey covers the area -5° ≤ l ≤ +5°, -5° ≤ b ≤ +5° over the velocity range -309 km s -1 ≤ v LSR ≤ 349km s -1 with a velocity resolution of 1km s -1. The ATCA data are supplemented with data from the Parkes Radio Telescope for sensitivity to all angular scales larger than the 145″ angular resolution of the survey. The mean rms brightness temperature across the field is 0.7K, except near (l, b) = 0°, 0° where it increases to ∼2K. This survey complements the Southern Galactic Plane Survey to complete the continuous coverage of the inner Galactic plane in H I at ∼2′ resolution. Here, we describe the observations and analysis of this GC survey and present the final data product.     Phenothiazine-mediated rescue of cognition in tau transgenic mice requires neuroprotection and reduced soluble tau burden

    Abstract Background It has traditionally been thought that the pathological accumulation of tau in Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies facilitates neurodegeneration, which in turn leads to cognitive impairment. However, recent evidence suggests that tau tangles are not the entity responsible for memory loss, rather it is an intermediate tau species that disrupts neuronal function. Thus, efforts to discover therapeutics for tauopathies emphasize soluble tau reductions as well as neuroprotection. Results Here, we found that neuroprotection alone caused by methylene blue (MB), the parent compound of the anti-tau phenothiaziazine drug, Rember&#8482;, was insufficient to rescue cognition in a mouse model of the human tauopathy, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and fronto-temporal dementia with parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP17): Only when levels of soluble tau protein were concomitantly reduced by a very high concentration of MB, was cognitive improvement observed. Thus, neurodegeneration can be decoupled from tau accumulation, but phenotypic improvement is only possible when soluble tau levels are also reduced. Conclusions Neuroprotection alone is not sufficient to rescue tau-induced memory loss in a transgenic mouse model. Development of neuroprotective agents is an area of intense investigation in the tauopathy drug discovery field. This may ultimately be an unsuccessful approach if soluble toxic tau intermediates are not also reduced. Thus, MB and related compounds, despite their pleiotropic nature, may be the proverbial "magic bullet" because they not only are neuroprotective, but are also able to facilitate soluble tau clearance. Moreover, this shows that neuroprotection is possible without reducing tau levels.     Fitting Together the HI Absorption and Emission in the SGPS

    In this paper we study 21-cm absorption spectra and the corresponding emission spectra toward bright continuum sources in the test region (326deg< l < 333 deg) of the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. This survey combines the high resolution of the Australia Telescope Compact Array with the full brightness temperature information of the Parkes single dish telescope. In particular, we focus on the abundance and temperature of the cool atomic clouds in the inner galaxy. The resulting mean opacity of the HI, , is measured as a function of Galactic radius; it increases going in from the solar circle, to a peak in the molecular ring of about four times its local value. This suggests that the cool phase is more abundant there, and colder, than it is locally. The distribution of cool phase temperatures is derived in three different ways. The naive, ``spin temperature'' technique overestimates the cloud temperatures, as expected. Using two alternative approaches we get good agreement on a histogram of the cloud temperatures, T(cool), corrected for blending with warm phase gas. The median temperature is about 65 K, but there is a long tail reaching down to temperatures below 20 K. Clouds with temperatures below 40 K are common, though not as common as warmer clouds (40 to 100 K). Using these results we discuss two related quantities, the peak brightness temperature seen in emission surveys, and the incidence of clouds seen in HI self-absorption.
