The Cause and Consequence of Ontogenetic Changes in Social Aggregation in New Zealand Spiny Lobsters
Ontogenetic changes in the behavior, spatial distribution, or habitat use of a species are presumably adaptations to ecological forces that differ in their effect on various life stages. The New Zealand rock lobster Jasus edwardsii is one of several species of spiny lobster that exhibits dramatic ontogenetic shifts in sociality and spatial distribution, and we tested whether such changes are adaptive. We first surveyed several natural populations of J. edwardsii to document size-specific differences in aggregation. To determine if chemical cues discharged by conspecifics promote aggregation of certain ontogenetic stages, we tested the responsiveness of lobsters of 3 ontogenetic stages (early benthic juvenile, juvenile, and subadult) to the chemical cues produced by conspecifics of different sizes. Finally, we tethered lobsters of different ontogenetic stages alone and in groups to test the effect of lobster size and aggregation on mortality. Our results offer compelling evidence that pre-reproductive J. edwardsii undergo an ontogenetic change in sociality that alters their spatial distribution and survival. Our field surveys show that J. edwardsii are solitary as early benthic juveniles and become social and aggregate as they grow larger. We then demonstrate, using laboratory experiments, that there is a size-specific increase in the response of pre-reproductive J. edwardsii to the chemical cues of larger conspecifics which facilitates these ontogenetic changes in aggregation. Finally, our tethering results confirm that this change in social condition is selectively advantageous: aggregation does not increase the survival of small lobsters, but larger lobsters survive better in groups. Thus, in this study we demonstrate the linkage between ontogenetic changes in the spatial distribution of a species, the behavioral process that creates the pattern, and the selective advantage conferred by these developmental changes
A Third Planet Orbiting HIP 14810
We present new precision radial velocities and a three-planet Keplerian orbit
fit for the V = 8.5, G5 V star HIP 14810. We began observing this star at Keck
Observatory as part of the N2K Planet Search Project. Wright et al. (2007)
announced the inner two planets to this system, and subsequent observations
have revealed the outer planet planet and the proper orbital solution for the
middle planet. The planets have minimum masses of 3.9, 1.3, and 0.6 M_Jup and
orbital periods of 6.67, 147.7, and 952 d, respectively. We have numerically
integrated the family of orbital solutions consistent with the data and find
that they are stable for at least 10^6 yr. Our photometric search shows that

Audiovisual Processing is Abnormal in Parkinson\u27s Disease and Correlates with Freezing of Gait and Disease Duration
Background: Sensory and perceptual disturbances progress with disease duration in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and probably contribute to motor deficits such as bradykinesia and gait disturbances, including freezing of gait (FOG). Simple reaction time tests are ideal to explore sensory processing, as they require little cognitive processing. Multisensory integration is the ability of the brain to integrate sensory information from multiple modalities into a single coherent percept, which is crucial for complex motor tasks such as gait. 9 10 11 12 13 Objectives: The aims of this study were to: 1. Assess differences in unisensory (auditory and visual) and multisensory processing speed in people with PD and age-matched healthy controls. 2. Compare relative differences in unisensory processing in people with PD with disease duration and freezing of gait status taking into account the motor delays, which are invariably present in PD. 3. Compare relative differences in multisensory (audiovisual) processing between the PD cohort and age-matched controls. 14 15 16 17 Methods: 39 people with PD (23 with FOG) and 17 age-matched healthy controls performed a reaction time task in response to unisensory (auditory-alone, visual-alone) and multisensory (audiovisual) stimuli. 18 19 Results: The PD group were significantly slower than controls for all conditions compared with healthy controls but auditory reaction times were significantly faster than visual for the PD group only. These relative unisensory differences are correlated with disease duration and divide the PD group by FOG status, but these factors are co-dependent. Although multisensory facilitation occurs in PD, it is significantly less enhanced than in healthy controls. 20 21 22 23 Conclusion: There are significant unisensory and multisensory processing abnormalities in PD. The relative differences in unisensory processing are specific to PD progression, providing a link between these sensory abnormalities and a motor feature of PD. Sensory disturbances have previously been postulated to be central to FOG but this is the first study to predict audiovisual processing abnormalities using FOG status. The multisensory processing abnormalities are independent of disease duration and FOG status and may be a potential biomarker for the disease
Cumulative Distribution Function and Spatially Resolved Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for the Quantitative Analysis of Emtricitabine
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has exceptional analytical sensitivity and selectivity. However, SERS irreproducibility presents an obstacle when using it for precise quantitative measurements. In this study, colloidal nanoparticles evaporated to dryness are used as a SERS active surface for the detection of the HIV drug emtricitabine (FTC; trade name Emtriva). Despite the irreproducibility of the SERS resulting from the stochastic process of evaporation, using a SERS scanning instrument, the SERS enhancement factors of spatially resolved spectra have a well-defined distribution of signals for a given analyte concentration. This distribution follows a power law function ranging from weak (very abundant signals) to very strong (sparse signals). By definition, a power law distribution cannot have a true mean. Hence a cumulative distribution function was used to model the concentration of emtricitabine, and calibration curves were constructed. For stochastically generated quantitative data sets, the precision of this approach is superior to methods utilizing signal averaging and improves analytical sensitivity
Metacarpophalangeal pattern profile analysis in Robinow syndrome
We analyzed the metacarpophalangeal pattern profile (MCPP) on 15 individuals with Robinow syndrome and calculated a mean Robinow syndrome profile. Correlation studies confirm clinical homogeneity of the hand profile in the Robinow syndrome. Discriminant analysis of individuals with Robinow syndrome compared with a sample of normal individuals produces a function of 6 MCPP variable that may provide a useful tool for diagnosis
