Is Success Hereditary? Evidence on the Performance of Spawned Ventures
A common phenomenon in entrepreneurship is that employees turn away from employmentto found their own businesses. Prior literature discusses the former employers’characteristics that influence the creation of entrepreneurial ventures. An investigation ofwhether these characteristics also affect the success of the spawned ventures is missing so far. This paper contributes to the literature by showing that entrepreneurial ventures spawned by well performing firms are financially more successful than ventures stemming from bad performing firms. This suggests that spawned entrepreneurs are able to exploit valuable knowledge from their previous employers which impacts their ventures’ performance positively. Heterogeneous Returns to Personality - The Role of Occupational Choice
We analyze the role of personality in occupational choice and wages using data from Germany for the years 1992 to 2009. Characterizing personality by use of seven complementary measures, the empirical findings show that it is an important determinant of occupational choice. Associated with that, identical personality traits are differently rewarded across occupations. By evaluating different personality profiles, we estimate the influence of personality as a whole. The estimates establish occupation-specific patterns of significant returns to particular personality profiles. These findings underline the importance to consider the occupational distribution when analyzing returns to personality due to its heterogeneous valuation
Comparison of the normal state properties of -(BEDT-TTF)Cu(NCS) and its deuterated analogue in high magnetic fields and under high hydrostatic pressures
Details of the Fermi-surface topology of deuterated
-(BEDT-TTF)Cu(NCS) ~have been measured as a function of
pressure, and compared with equivalent measurements of the undeuterated salt.
We find that the superconducting transition temperature is much more
dramatically suppressed by increasing pressure in the deuterated salt. It is
suggested that this is linked to pressure-induced changes in the Fermi-surface
topology, which occur more rapidly in the deuterated salt than in the
undeuterated salt as the pressure is raised. Our data suggest that the negative
isotope effect observed on deuteration is due to small differences in
Fermi-surface topology caused by the isotopic substitution.Comment: 10 pages 3 figure
Binding dynamics of a monomeric SSB protein to DNA : a single-molecule multi-process approach

Funding for open access charge: Wellcome Trust; University of St Andrews.Single-stranded DNA binding proteins (SSBs) are ubiquitous across all organisms and are characterized by the presence of an OB (oligonucleotide/oligosaccharide/oligopeptide) binding motif to recognize single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). Despite their critical role in genome maintenance, our knowledge about SSB function is limited to proteins containing multiple OB-domains and little is known about single OB-folds interacting with ssDNA. Sulfolobus solfataricus SSB (SsoSSB) contains a single OB-fold and being the simplest representative of the SSB-family may serve as a model to understand fundamental aspects of SSB:DNA interactions. Here, we introduce a novel approach based on the competition between Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), protein-induced fluorescence enhancement (PIFE) and quenching to dissect SsoSSB binding dynamics at single monomer resolution. We demonstrate that SsoSSB follows a monomer-by-monomer binding mechanism that involves a positive-cooperativity component between adjacent monomers. We found that SsoSSB dynamic behaviour is closer to that of Replication Protein A than to Escherichia coli SSB; a feature that might be inherited from the structural analogies of their DNA-binding domains. We hypothesize that SsoSSB has developed a balance between highdensity binding and a highly dynamic interaction with ssDNA to ensure efficient protection of the genome but still allow access to ssDNA during vital cellular processes.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Binding to medium and long chain fatty acyls is a common property of HEAT and ARM repeat modules.
Covalent post-translational modification (PTM) of proteins with acyl groups of various carbon chain-lengths regulates diverse biological processes ranging from chromatin dynamics to subcellular localization. While the YEATS domain has been found to be a prominent reader of acetylation and other short acyl modifications, whether additional acyl-lysine reader domains exist, particularly for longer carbon chains, is unclear. Here, we employed a quantitative proteomic approach using various modified peptide baits to identify reader proteins of various acyl modifications. We discovered that proteins harboring HEAT and ARM repeats bind to lysine myristoylated peptides. Recombinant HEAT and ARM repeats bind to myristoylated peptides independent of the peptide sequence or the position of the myristoyl group. Indeed, HEAT and ARM repeats bind directly to medium- and long-chain free fatty acids (MCFA and LCFA). Lipidomic experiments suggest that MCFAs and LCFAs interact with HEAT and ARM repeat proteins in mammalian cells. Finally, treatment of cells with exogenous MCFAs and inhibitors of MCFA-CoA synthases increase the transactivation activity of the ARM repeat protein β-catenin. Taken together, our results suggest an unappreciated role for fatty acids in the regulation of proteins harboring HEAT or ARM repeats
The instrumental use of technical doubts: technological controversies, investment decisions and air pollution controls in the global shipping industry
In principle, the installation of emissions abatement technology (otherwise known as scrubbers) on ships would reduce air pollution and premature deaths from disease and allow vessels to save costs by continuing to burn cheap high-sulphur residual fuel oil. But very few scrubbers have been installed. A recent House of Commons Select Committee Inquiry was unable to decide between the competing technical claims of scrubber manufacturers and ship operators, over whether scrubber technology was sufficiently 'mature' for present installation. From the perspective of science and technology studies, this paper draws on interviews with stakeholders and written and oral evidence to the committee to argue that this was a dispute which foregrounded technical arguments for investment decisions that were actually being made on economic grounds. Where scientific/technical closure is a matter of communal understanding rather than technical demonstration, technical doubt can be used instrumentally for economic reasons to delay closure

Briefly, my article addresses the contradictory relationship we have with our pets, particularly cats and dogs. Philosophically, love is defined as a clear relationship amongst humans and as such dependent on human nature. Traditionally, the nature of animals is understood in opposition to human nature. This categorical differentiation has been drawn into question (e.g. Derrida) especially when looking at our relationship with our pets. Contemporary photography can visualise essentially complex and contradictory facets of our relationship with our pets. Radical innovation: making the right bets
Report published by Advanced Institute of Management ResearchOur research reveals that organisations, here in the UK and elsewhere, must face up
to the complex challenges associated with exploring and developing radical ideas and
innovations if they are to continue to be successful in the long term.
■Discontinuous innovation – ‘doing something different’ innovation – is often the
driver of sustained competitive advantage and shareholder value creation. As such
the ability to support radical innovation is an essential organisational competence.
â– The decision-making process in which resources are allocated to innovation
projects is extremely challenging, as the degree of uncertainty involved means
that using conventional systems and processes often leads to radical ideas being
rejected.
â– The research identifies twelve excuses that organisations use to justify their
decision not to pursue radical innovation. Organisations must learn to recognise
when they are making these excuses and find other ways of evaluating how to
behave when faced with radical innovation.
â– The innovation selection environment that operates in organisations can be
described in terms of four zones. In two of those zones, new strategies are
required for innovation selection decision-making.
â– There are a number of promising strategies that can help organisations to back
an innovation winner. These include: building alternative visions; bridge-building
to/from outside the box; probe and learn method; using alternative evaluation and
measurement criteria; mobilising sponsorship and championship; using alternative
decision-making pathways; deploying alternative funding structures; using
alternative – dedicated/devolved/decentralised – implementation structures;
mobilising entrepreneurship inside and outside the firm.
â– Through a thorough understanding of the innovation selection process,
organisations can avoid the pitfalls that lead to abandoning potentially marketwinning
radical ideas. At the same time they can learn how to implement strategies
