Native American Cultural Values Influence on the Perception of Therapeutic Factors Operating in Inpatient Addiction Treament Groups
Addiction Treatment programs have long used group therapy as an integral modality in their treatment programming. While considerable research has been conducted regarding these groups, few if any have considered patients\u27 perspectives of the factors most helpful in the group process. Furthermore, and more importantly, little research was found that considered the use of group therapy in the treatment of Native Americans who suffer from substance use disorders. This absence in the literature seems ironic considering the extreme occurrence of alcoholism in this cultural group.
This research project considered the reported experience of Native Americans in inpatient addiction treatment groups. Sixty Native Americans, who had been admitted to the Chemical Dependency Unit at the North Dakota State Hospital for the treatment of alcoholism, participated in this study to determine the value attributed to Yalom\u27s Therapeutic Factors and the potential influence of traditional Native American values on such factors. The results of this study suggest that, with this particular subject group, traditional Native American values did not have a significant influence on the rankings of the therapeutic factors. However, similarities in the ranking of Therapeutic Factors were noted, when compared with research studies that considered similar short term, inpatient therapy groups.
Unfortunately, this study has significant limitations and the results cannot be generalized beyond this subject group. I recommend that further research be conducted to examine the influence of Native American cultural values on the perception of the group experience, especially in regard to the treatment of substance use disorders
Team-based Classroom Pedagogy Reframed: The Student Perspective
Postsecondary learning environments often utilize team-based pedagogical practices to challenge and support student learning outcomes. This manuscript presents the findings of a qualitative research study that analyzed the viewpoints and perceptions of group or team-based projects among undergraduate business students. Results identified five pro-team thematic perspectives of team learners’ views including better deliverables, increased ideas, improved learning experiences, reduced workload, and collective security. Responses from students who preferred to work autonomously resulted in three themes centered on self-sufficiency, social loafing, and schedule challenges. Two situational student responses were identified regarding how and why faculty should utilize group and team projects in consideration of individual efficiency and assignment objectives and outcomes conflicts. This study concludes with research-based recommendations for teaching, learning, and further research
The Impact of Muscular Strength on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors
The purpose of this study was to determine the associations between isokinetic leg muscular strength and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor characterizations in Americans aged 50 and older. Using a publicly available dataset from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a secondary analysis was conducted on participants (males â„50 yrs; females â„55 yrs; N=10,858) pooled from 1999 to 2002. CVD risk factors were determined using the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) cutoff values. CVD risk factor characterization was determined by creating CVD risk factor profiles (i.e., the total number of CVD risk factors an individual possesses), then separating participants into low (0-2 CVD risk factors), moderate (3-5), and high (6-8) risk groups. Muscular strength was determined by isokinetic maximal peak force (PF) of the leg extensors, both raw and normalized to body mass. Prevention of Renal ApoB Retention is Protective Against Diabetic Nephropathy: Role of TGF-ÎČ Inhibition
Animal studies demonstrate that hyperlipidemia and renal lipid accumulation contribute to the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy (DN). We previously demonstrated that renal lipoproteins colocalize with biglycan, a renal proteoglycan. The purpose of this study was to determine whether prevention of renal lipid (apoB) accumulation attenuates DN. Biglycan-deficient and biglycan wild-type Ldlrâ/â mice were made diabetic via streptozotocin and fed a high cholesterol diet. As biglycan deficiency is associated with elevated transforming growth factor-ÎČ (TGF-ÎČ), in some experiments mice were injected with either the TGF-ÎČ-neutralizing antibody, 1D11, or with 13C4, an irrelevant control antibody. Biglycan deficiency had no significant effect on renal apoB accumulation, but led to modest attenuation of DN with âŒ30% reduction in albuminuria; however, biglycan deficiency caused a striking elevation in TGF-ÎČ. Use of 1D11 led to sustained suppression of TGF-ÎČ for approximately 8 weeks at a time. The 1D11 treatment caused decreased renal apoB accumulation, decreased albuminuria, decreased renal hypertrophy, and improved survival, compared with the 13C4 treatment. Thus, prevention of renal apoB accumulation is protective against development of DN. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that prevention of renal apoB accumulation is a mechanism by which TGF-ÎČ inhibition is nephroprotective
Generation of nonclassical microwave states using an artificial atom in 1D open space
We have embedded an artificial atom, a superconducting transmon qubit, in a
1D open space and investigated the scattering properties of an incident
microwave coherent state. By studying the statistics of the reflected and
transmitted fields, we demonstrate that the scattered states can be
nonclassical. In particular, by measuring the second-order correlation
function, , we show photon antibunching in the reflected field and
superbunching in the transmitted field. We also compare the elastically and
inelastically scattered fields using both phase-sensitive and phase-insensitive

Host-linked soil viral ecology along a permafrost thaw gradient
Climate change threatens to release abundant carbon that is sequestered at high latitudes, but the constraints on microbial metabolisms that mediate the release of methane and carbon dioxide are poorly understood1,2,3,4,5,6,7. The role of viruses, which are known to affect microbial dynamics, metabolism and biogeochemistry in the oceans8,9,10, remains largely unexplored in soil. Here, we aimed to investigate how viruses influence microbial ecology and carbon metabolism in peatland soils along a permafrost thaw gradient in Sweden. We recovered 1,907 viral populations (genomes and large genome fragments) from 197 bulk soil and size-fractionated metagenomes, 58% of which were detected in metatranscriptomes and presumed to be active. In silico predictions linked 35% of the viruses to microbial host populations, highlighting likely viral predators of key carbon-cycling microorganisms, including methanogens and methanotrophs. Lineage-specific virus/host ratios varied, suggesting that viral infection dynamics may differentially impact microbial responses to a changing climate. Virus-encoded glycoside hydrolases, including an endomannanase with confirmed functional activity, indicated that viruses influence complex carbon degradation and that viral abundances were significant predictors of methane dynamics. These findings suggest that viruses may impact ecosystem function in climate-critical, terrestrial habitats and identify multiple potential viral contributions to soil carbon cycling
Early Gadolinium Enhancement for Area at Risk Determination: A Preclinical Validation Study
ObjectivesâThe aim of this study was to determine if early gadolinium enhancement (EGE) by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in a canine model of reperfused myocardial infarction depicts the area at risk (AAR) as determined by microsphere blood flow analysis.
BackgroundâIt remains controversial whether only the irreversibly injured myocardium enhances when performing CMR imaging in the setting of acute myocardial infarction. Recently, EGE has been proposed as a measure of the AAR in acute myocardial infarction as it correlates well with T2-weighted imaging of the AAR, but still requires pathological validation.
MethodsâEleven dogs underwent 2 hours of coronary artery occlusion and 48 hours of reperfusion prior to imaging at 1.5T. EGE imaging was performed 3 minutes after contrast administration with coverage of the entire left ventricle. Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) imaging was performed between 10 and 15 minutes after contrast injection. AAR was defined as myocardium with blood flow (mL/min/g) \u3c 2SD from remote myocardium determined by microspheres during occlusion. The size of infarction was determined using triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC).
ResultsâThere was no significant difference in the size of enhancement by EGE compared to the size of AAR by microspheres (44.1± 15.8% vs. 42.7± 9.2%, p=0.61) with good correlation (r=0.88, p \u3c 0.001) and good agreement by Bland-Altman analysis (mean bias 1.4± 17.4%). There was no difference in the size of enhancement by EGE compared to enhancement on native T1 and T2 maps. The size of EGE was significantly greater than the infarct by TTC, (44.1± 15.8% vs. 20.7± 14.4%, p \u3c 0.001) and LGE (44.1± 15.8% vs. 23.5± 12.7%, p \u3c 0.001).
ConclusionâAt three minutes post-contrast, EGE correlated well with the AAR by microspheres and CMR, and was greater than infarct size. Thus, EGE enhances both reversibly and irreversibly injured myocardium

Pre-vaccination prevalence of anogenital and oral human papillomavirus in young HIV-infected men who have sex with men.
The aims of this study were to: 1) determine prevalence of anogenital and oral HPV, 2) determine concordance between HPV at anal, perianal, scrotal/penile, and oral sites; and 3) describe factors associated with anogenital HPV types targeted by the 9-valent vaccine. Data were collected from 2012 to 2015 among men who have sex with men 18-26 years of age enrolled in a vaccine trial (NâŻ=âŻ145). Penile/scrotal, perianal, anal, and oral samples were tested for 61 HPV types. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with types in the 9-valent vaccine. Participants' mean age was 23.0 years, 55.2% were African-American, and 26.2% were Hispanic; 93% had anal, 40% penile, and 6% oral HPV. Among those with anogenital infection, 18% had HPV16. Concordance was low between anogenital and oral sites. Factors independently associated with a 9-valent vaccine-type HPV were: race (African-American vs. White, OR=2.67, 95% CI=1.11-6.42), current smoking (yes vs. no, OR=2.37, 95% CI=1.03-5.48), and number of recent receptive anal sex partners (2+ vs. 0, OR=3.47, 95% CI=1.16-10.4). Most MSM were not infected with HPV16 or HPV18, suggesting that they may still benefit from HPV vaccination, but anogenital HPV was very common, highlighting the importance of vaccinating men before sexual initiation.
