The ISEA 2011 was held this year September 14- 21 at the Sanbanci Centre Towers in Levant, which is the financial and business district of the city. As the conference is now in its seventeenth year, the International Symposium on Electronic Art brought together over one hundred international artists from all over the world. With more than four hundred and fifty paper sessions, seventy panels, sixty workshops, as well as networking events, keynotes, exhibitions, performances, screenings and special events, the two-week conference certainly held something for everyone. Works of art and panel discussions covered from the gamut of algorithm art to robotics, from musical plants to art with bacteria. This year’s conference aimed to explore the stories and achievements of the electronic arts by showcasing the endeavours of these artists and by catalysing local and international people, resources and interests.Peer reviewe

Zero Cycles of Degree One on Principal Homogeneous Spaces

Let kk be a field of characteristic different from 2. Let GG be a simply connected or adjoint semisimple algebraic kk-group which does not contain a simple factor of type E8E_8 and such that every exceptional simple factor of type other than G2G_2 is quasisplit. We show that if a principal homogeneous space under GG over kk admits a zero cycle of degree 1 then it has a kk-rational point

Breaking the Hard Limits: Romance, Pornography, and the Question of Genre in the Fifty Shades Trilogy

    Get PDF
The Fifty Shades series has brought erotic fiction to a broader and more mainstream audience than ever before. In its wake, a number of erotic romance series have achieved unprecedented popularity, such as Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series and Lisa Renee Jones’ Inside Out series. These books do not fit comfortably into the genres of romance or pornography: rather, they fuse the romantic and pornographic together. This locates the multiple climaxes of pornography within the overarching emotional climax of romance and creates a structure that is both finite and infinite, allowing the books to create both instant and delayed gratification. This article examines The Sheik as a textual forebear to Fifty Shades before moving on to examine the ways in which romance and pornography are fused, overcoming the limits of serialization in romance, and creating a romantic “pornotopia.

Characterization of a Maximum Likelihood Gamma-Ray Reconstruction Algorithm for VERITAS

We characterize the improved angular and energy resolution of a new likelihood gamma-ray reconstruction for VERITAS. The algorithm uses the average photoelectrons stored in templates that are based on simulations of large numbers of showers as a function of 5 gamma-ray parameters: energy, zenith angle, core location (x,y), and depth of first interaction in the atmosphere. Comparing the template predictions of the average photoelectrons in each pixel to observed photoelectrons allows us to calculate the likelihood. By maximizing the likelihood, we find the optimal gamma-ray parameters. The maximum likelihood reconstruction improves on the standard VERITAS analysis which relies on: 1. the weighted average of the axis of elongation in the images to determine the gamma-ray direction and 2. look-up tables that relate the observed energy deposition of Cherenkov photons to the true gamma-ray energy. Not only is the maximum likelihood method more accurate, but it is also not biased by missing pixel information due to the edge of the camera or pixel cleaning. The drawback is that it takes more CPU time (80 ms/event).Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, In Proceedings of the 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2017), Busan (South Korea

    NHEP Buffer Outreach 2005 - 2006

    Get PDF
The purpose of the buffer outreach project is to provide education, assistance, and tools to the coastal watershed towns so that they will understand the importance of buffers for water quality and quantity, the need to enhance their own town’s buffer protections, and how to move forward with enacting new buffer protection measures. These activities helped implement several Action Plans from the Management Plan. NHEP staff developed a buffer presentation, a marketing brochure for the presentation, and a webpage devoted to buffer information. One presentation was given at a public hearing in New Durham. NHEP funded several buffer related projects including UNH Complex System Research Center’s buffer characterization and buffer mapper, Southern New Hampshire Planning Commission’s buffer outreach program in Candia and Deerfield, and buffer ordinance development in New Durham through the Community Technical Assistance Program
