Confirming the multidimensionality of psychologically controlling parenting among Chinese-American mothers: Love withdrawal, guilt induction, and shaming

Despite the theoretical conceptualization of parental psychological control as a multidimensional construct, the majority of previous studies have examined psychological control as a unidimensional scale. Moreover, the conceptualization of shaming and its associations with love withdrawal and guilt induction are unclear. The current study aimed to fill these gaps by evaluating the latent factor structure underlying 18 items from Olsen et al. (2002) that were conceptually relevant to love withdrawal, guilt induction, and shaming practices in a sample of 169 mothers of Chinese-American preschoolers. A multidimensional three-factor model and bi-factor model were specified based on our formulated operational definitions for the three dimensions of psychological control. Both models were found to be superior to the unidimensional model. In addition, results from the bi-factor model and an additional second-order factor model indicated that psychological control is essentially empirically isomorphic with guilt induction. Although love withdrawal and shaming factors were also fairly strong indicators of psychological control, each exhibited important additional unique variability and mutual distinctiveness. Implications for the conceptualization of love withdrawal, guilt induction, and shaming as well as directions for future studies are discussed

Quantum coherent control of highly multipartite continuous-variable entangled states by tailoring parametric interactions
The generation of continuous-variable multipartite entangled states is
important for several protocols of quantum information processing and
communication, such as one-way quantum computation or controlled dense coding.
In this article we theoretically show that multimode optical parametric
oscillators can produce a great variety of such states by an appropriate
control of the parametric interaction, what we accomplish by tailoring either
the spatio-temporal shape of the pump, or the geometry of the nonlinear medium.
Specific examples involving currently available optical parametric oscillators
are given, hence showing that our ideas are within reach of present technology.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Correlated Hybrid Fluctuations from Inflation with Thermal Dissipation
We investigate the primordial scalar perturbations in the thermal dissipative
inflation where the radiation component (thermal bath) persists and the density
fluctuations are thermally originated. The perturbation generated in this model
is hybrid, i.e. it consists of both adiabatic and isocurvature components. We
calculate the fractional power ratio () and the correlation coefficient
() between the adiabatic and the isocurvature perturbations at the
commencing of the radiation regime. Since the adiabatic/isocurvature
decomposition of hybrid perturbations generally is gauge-dependent at
super-horizon scales when there is substantial energy exchange between the
inflaton and the thermal bath, we carefully perform a proper decomposition of
the perturbations. We find that the adiabatic and the isocurvature
perturbations are correlated, even though the fluctuations of the radiation
component is considered uncorrelated with that of the inflaton. We also show
that both and depend mainly on the ratio between the
dissipation coefficient and the Hubble parameter during inflation.
The correlation is positive () for strong dissipation cases
where , and is negative for weak dissipation instances where
. Moreover, and in this model are not
independent of each other. The predicted relation between and
is consistent with the WMAP observation. Other testable predictions are also

Density pertubation of unparticle dark matter in the flat Universe
The unparticle has been suggested as a candidate of dark matter. We
investigated the growth rate of the density perturbation for the unparticle
dark matter in the flat Universe. First, we consider the model in which
unparticle is the sole dark matter and find that the growth factor can be
approximated well by , where is
the equation of state of unparticle. Our results show that the presence of
modifies the behavior of the growth factor . For the second model
where unparticle co-exists with cold dark matter, the growth factor has a new
approximation and
is a function of . Thus the growth factor of unparticle is quite
different from that of usual dark matter. These information can help us know

Suppressing CMB Quadrupole with a Bounce from Contracting Phase to Inflation
Recent released WMAP data show a low value of quadrupole in the CMB
temperature fluctuations, which confirms the early observations by COBE. In
this paper, a scenario, in which a contracting phase is followed by an
inflationary phase, is constructed. We calculate the perturbation spectrum and
show that this scenario can provide a reasonable explanation for lower CMB

Determinants of international students' academic performance: A comparison between Chinese and other international students
With the increasing number of international students travelling to well-developed countries for higher education, there has been a growing interest in exploring the factors that influence their academic performance during their overseas studies. This study aims to give an insight into international students' learning experience by investigating the differences between Chinese and non-Chinese cultural groups and leads to the identification of the key predictors of their academic achievement via multiple regression analysis. The results suggest that the perceived importance of learning success to family, English writing ability, and social communication with their compatriots are significant predictors for all international students. As the predominant group, Chinese students display some distinctive characteristics. A less active learning strategy is observed among Chinese students relative to others, but no evidence has found that this negatively affects their academic achievement. © 2010 Nuffic

Epigenetic Dysregulation of the Drp1 Binding Partners MiD49 and MiD51 Increases Mitotic Mitochondrial Fission and Promotes Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Mechanistic and Therapeutic Implications
Background -Mitotic fission is increased in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a hyperproliferative, apoptosis-resistant disease. The fission mediator, dynamin related protein 1 (Drp1) must complex with adaptor proteins to cause fission. Drp1-induced fission has been therapeutically targeted in experimental PAH. Here we examine the role of two recently discovered, poorly understood, Drp1 adapter proteins, mitochondrial dynamics protein of 49 and 51 kDa (MiD49 and MiD51) in normal vascular cells and explore their dysregulation in PAH. Methods -Immunoblots of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMC, control, n=6; PAH, n=8) and immunohistochemistry of lung sections (control, n=6; PAH, n=6) were used to assess the expression of MiD49 and MiD51. The effects of manipulating MiDs on cell proliferation, cell cycle, and apoptosis were assessed in human and rodent PAH PASMC using flow cytometry. Mitochondrial fission was studied by confocal imaging. A microRNA (miR) involved in the regulation of MiD expression was identified using microarray techniques andin silicoanalyses. The expression of circulatory miR was assessed using qRT-PCR in healthy volunteers (HV) vs PAH patients from Sheffield, UK (plasma, HV, n=29, PAH, n=27; whole blood, HV, n=11, PAH, n=14), and then confirmed in a cohort from Beijing, China (plasma, HV, n=19, PAH, n=36; whole blood, HV, n=20, PAH, n=39). This work was replicated in monocrotaline and SU5416-hypoxia, preclinical PAH models. siRNA targeting MiDs or a miR mimic were nebulized to rats with monocrotaline-induced PAH (n=4-10). Results -MiD expression is increased in PAH PASMC, which accelerates Drp1-mediated mitotic fission, increases cell proliferation and decreases apoptosis. Silencing MiDs (but not other Drp1 binding partners, Fis1 or MFF) promotes mitochondrial fusion and causes G1-phase cell cycle arrest, through ERK1/2 and CDK4-dependent mechanism. Augmenting MiDs in normal cells causes fission and recapitulates the PAH phenotype. MiD upregulation results from decreased miR-34a-3p expression. Circulatory miR-34a-3p expression is decreased in both PAH patients and in preclinical models of PAH. Silencing MiDs or augmenting miR-34a-3p regresses experimental PAH. Conclusions -In health, MiDs regulate Drp1-mediated fission whilst in disease, epigenetic upregulation of MiDs increases mitotic fission, which drives pathologic proliferation and apoptosis resistance. The miR-34a-3p-MiD pathway offers new therapeutic targets for PAH
