Determinations of |V_ub| and |V_cb| from measurements of B -> X_u,c\ell\nu differential decay rates

Methods are described in the framework of light-cone expansion which allow one to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements |V_ub| and |V_cb| from measurements of the differential decay rates as a function of the scaling variables in the inclusive semileptonic decays of B mesons. By these model-independent methods the dominant hadronic uncertainties can be avoided and the B -> X_u\ell\nu decay can be very efficiently differentiated from the B -> X_c\ell\nu decay, which may lead to precise determinations of |V_ub| and |V_cb|.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, version as published in Mod. Lifetime of molecule-atom mixtures near a Feshbach resonance in 40K

We report a dramatic magnetic field dependence in the lifetime of trapped, ultracold diatomic molecules created through an s-wave Feshbach resonance in 40K. The molecule lifetime increases from less than 1 ms away from the Feshbach resonance to greater than 100 ms near resonance. We also have measured the trapped atom lifetime as a function of magnetic field near the Feshbach resonance; we find that the atom loss is more pronounced on the side of the resonance containing the molecular bound state

Highly Ionised Gas as a Diagnostic of the Inner NLR

The spectra of AGN from the ultraviolet to the near infrared, exhibit emission lines covering a wide range of ionisation states, from neutral species such as [O I] 6300A, up to [Fe XIV] 5303A. Here we report on some recent studies of the properties of highly ionised lines (HILs), plus two case studies of individual objects. Future IFU observations at high spatial and good spectral resolution, will probe the excitation and kinematics of the gas in the zone between the extended NLR and unresolved BLR. Multi-component SED fitting can be used to link the source of photoionisation with the strengths and ratios of the HILs.Comment: Proceedings of the IAU Symposium: Co-evolution of Central Black Holes and Galaxie

Periodicities in the occurrence of aurora as indicators of solar variability

    Get PDF
A compilation of records of the aurora observed in China from the Time of the Legends (2000 - 3000 B.C.) to the mid-18th century has been used to infer the frequencies and strengths of solar activity prior to modern times. A merging of this analysis with auroral and solar activity patterns during the last 200 years provides basically continuous information about solar activity during the last 2000 years. The results show periodicities in solar activity that contain average components with a long period (approx. 412 years), three middle periods (approx. 38 years, approx. 77 years, and approx. 130 years), and the well known short period (approx. 11 years)
