    3D Well-composed Polyhedral Complexes

A binary three-dimensional (3D) image II is well-composed if the boundary surface of its continuous analog is a 2D manifold. Since 3D images are not often well-composed, there are several voxel-based methods ("repairing" algorithms) for turning them into well-composed ones but these methods either do not guarantee the topological equivalence between the original image and its corresponding well-composed one or involve sub-sampling the whole image. In this paper, we present a method to locally "repair" the cubical complex Q(I)Q(I) (embedded in R3\mathbb{R}^3) associated to II to obtain a polyhedral complex P(I)P(I) homotopy equivalent to Q(I)Q(I) such that the boundary of every connected component of P(I)P(I) is a 2D manifold. The reparation is performed via a new codification system for P(I)P(I) under the form of a 3D grayscale image that allows an efficient access to cells and their faces

Numerical computation of transonic loads on Ariane 5ECA during launch phase

The objective of the thesis has been analyze the transonic loads acting on the launcher Ariane 5ECA at different altitudes, velocities and angles of attack during the launch phase. It has been possible by several simulations with STAR-CCM+.The launcher has been designed with Solidworks also to permit the simulation of the jet leaving the rocket engines. In this way it was possible to obtain information of pressure and mach number variation inside the engines. Finally, the thesis has been focused on the fairing and the frequency domain has been obtained

Topological evaluation of volume reconstructions by voxel carving

Space or voxel carving [1, 4, 10, 15] is a technique for creating a three-dimensional reconstruction of an object from a series of two-dimensional images captured from cameras placed around the object at different viewing angles. However, little work has been done to date on evaluating the quality of space carving results. This paper extends the work reported in [8], where application of persistent homology was initially proposed as a tool for providing a topological analysis of the carving process along the sequence of 3D reconstructions with increasing number of cameras. We give now a more extensive treatment by: (1) developing the formal framework by which persistent homology can be applied in this context; (2) computing persistent homology of the 3D reconstructions of 66 new frames, including different poses, resolutions and camera orders; (3) studying what information about stability, topological correctness and influence of the camera orders in the carving performance can be drawn from the computed barcodes

Background and objective: Functional properties of essential oils are attributed to their components, many of which exhibit antimicrobial activity against pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms in a wide variety of foods. However, essential oils are unstable compounds; therefore, they can be encapsulated for a better protection and increase of functionality. In this work, antimicrobial activities of oregano, thyme and clove leave essential oils (non-encapsulated and nanoencapsulated) were assessed against Escherichia coli ATCC 29922, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 using emulsification.Material and methods: The essential oils were characterized based on their physicochemical properties. Nanoemulsions were prepared, using 5% (w w-1) of essential oils, and then characterized based on their physical properties, stability and encapsulation efficiency. The microdilution antimicrobial assay was carried out to assess minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of the essential oils and their nanoemulsions. Data from physical properties of the essential oils and physical properties, stability and encapsulation efficiency of the nanoemulsions were statistically analyzed. Results and conclusion: Antimicrobial activity of the essential oils showed decreases in minimum inhibitory concentration by 27-60% for the nanoencapsulated oils, compared to nonencapsulated oils. Nanoencapsulated and nonencapsulated oregano essential oils exhibited the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration values. Based on the results, nanoencapslulated essential oils may further be used in various foods to avoid microbial contaminations.Conflict of interest: The authors declare no conflict of interest
