    Aprender Historia con sentido

    Get PDF
In this research, the opinions, appreciations, and assessments of students enrolled in History subjects are analyzed. The objective is to inquire into the meanings that they assign to their experiences in the courses, based on identifying the educatio- nal strategies used and their scope, analyzing if teaching is linked to a traditional paradigm or a critical-reflexive one, whether it favors the development of historical thought and consciousness or not, as well as the formative meaning that students give to the discipline. The work is the product of research with a mixed methodolo- gical approach that addresses the problem with high school students of a private institution in Mexico City. Among the findings, a higher incidence of traditional practices is identified in the previous school trajectory, while in the current cour- ses a primarily critical-reflexive approach is observed, which impacts the learning process, motivation, and formative sense that students concede. The urgent need to transform educational practices and incorporate strategies aimed at promoting the development of historical thought capable of generating historical awareness is evident, in order to train individuals capable of positioning themselves critically and becoming agents of change in social reality.

Taenia crassiceps Infection Attenuates Multiple Low-Dose Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes

Taenia crassiceps, like other helminths, can exert regulatory effects on the immune system of its host. This study investigates the effect of chronic T. crassiceps infection on the outcome of Multiple Low Dose Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes (MLDS). Healthy or previously T. crassiceps-infected mice received MLDS and type 1 diabetes (T1D) symptoms were evaluated for 6 weeks following the induction of MLDS. T. crassiceps-infected mice displayed lower blood glucose levels throughout the study. A significantly lower percentage of T. crassiceps-infected mice (40%) developed T1D compared to the uninfected group (100%). Insulitis was remarkably absent in T. crassiceps-infected mice, which had normal pancreatic insulin content, whereas uninfected mice showed a dramatic reduction in pancreatic insulin. Infected mice that received MLDS did not show an increase in their regulatory T cell population, however, they had a greater number of alternatively activated macrophages, higher levels of the cytokine IL-4, and lower levels of TNF-α. Therefore, infection with T. crassiceps causes an immunomodulation that modifies the incidence and development of MLDS-induced autoimmune diabetes

Hepatic undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma as a cause of acute abdomen

    Get PDF
Primary liver sarcoma represents less than 1% of all primary liver tumors. Hepatic undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma (HUES) is included in the histologic group of primary liver sarcomas. HUES is a rare malignant liver tumor with a low incidence in the adult population. At moment there is no tumor marker that increases suspicion or diagnosis Early diagnosis is key to rise the possibilities of long-term survival. It has currently improved its prognosis through multidisciplinary management with surgical resection and chemotherapy. This case report presents a 20-year-old female patient with acute abdomen and anemic syndrome secondary to spontaneous rupture of a HUES requiring medical management initially based on resuscitation and arterial embolization with subsequent surgical resection

Infective Endocarditis in End-Stage Renal Disease Patients in Developing Countries: What is the Real Problem?

    Get PDF
The epidemiology of infective endocarditis (IE) has changed over the last decades, due to various factors. This chapter focuses on IE in patients with end-stage renal disease. Then it reviews the most relevant reports published in the last decade worldwide; the different scenarios in developing countries versus developed countries; different microorganisms, treatment times, and outcomes; and also our own experience in these patients. Finally, it mentions the recommendations that have helped some developed countries to reduce more than 50% of bacteremia in catheter patients and how to make them possible in developing countries

Xilotecnia of the wood of Acacia schaffneri from the state of hidalgo, Mexico

The genus Acacia spp belongs to the family Leguminosae, with more than 1300 species distributed naturally in all continents except Europe. In Mexico there are 85 species, of which 46 are endemic, most located in arid and semiarid regions, being Acacia coulteri and Acacia farnesiana the most widely distributed. The aim of this study was to determine the technological characteristics of the wood of Acacia schaffneri. To determine the anatomical characteristics, the methodology of Autonomous Chapingo University’s wood anatomy laboratory was used; for the physical properties, standards NOM EE-117-1981 and NMX-EE-167-1983 were used, and in calculating the mechanical properties the mathematical formulas were employed. The wood is reddish brown and has interlocked grain with diffuse porosity, aliform confluent parenchyma and in confluent bands, and crystals and gums. The proportion of cells was 11,87% vessel elements, 50,65% fibers 27,76% axial parenchyma and 9,81% ray parenchyma. Basic density was 880 kg/m3, tangential, radial, axial and volumetric shrinkage values were 10,57%; 4,97%; 0,10% and 15,82 % respectively, and fiber saturation point was 19,97%. The mechanical properties were very high, so it can be used in the manufacture of floors and in building constructions

Testing the Efficacy of a Multi-Component DNA-Prime/DNA-Boost Vaccine against Trypanosoma cruzi Infection in Dogs

    Get PDF
Immunization of dogs with DNA-prime/DNA-boost vaccine (TcVac1) enhanced the Trypanosoma cruzi-specific type 1 antibody and CD8+ T cell responses that resulted in an early control of acute parasitemia and a moderate decline in pathological symptoms during chronic phase. Further improvement of vaccine-induced immunity would be required to achieve clinical and epidemiological benefits and prevent transmission of parasites from vaccinated/infected dogs to triatomines
