Specifically, Bernard et al. (2012) showed that perceivers were better at recognizing sexualized male bodies when the bodies were presented upright than upside down, whereas this pattern did not emerge for sexualized female bodies; thus, male bodies were recognized configurally similar to other human stimuli whereas female bodies were recognized analytically, similarly to most objects (see Kostic, 2013 for an exact replication). Based on two studies, Schmidt and Kistemaker (2015) concluded that Bernard et al. (2012)\u27s findings were: (i) due to a symmetry confound; (ii) not due to target\u27s sexualization. This commentary challenges these conclusions

    Do Employees From Less-Healthy Communities Use More Care and Cost More? Seeking to Establish a Business Case for Investment in Community Health.

    INTRODUCTION: Few studies have examined the impact of community health on employers. We explored whether employed adults and their adult dependents living in less-healthy communities in the greater Philadelphia region used more care and incurred higher costs to employers than employees from healthier communities. METHODS: We used a multi-employer database to identify adult employees and dependents with continuous employment and mapped them to 31 zip code regions. We calculated community health scores at the regional level, by using metrics similar to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) County Health Rankings but with local data. We used descriptive analyses and multilevel linear modeling to explore relationships between community health and 3 outcome variables: emergency department (ED) use, hospital use, and paid claims. Business leaders reviewed findings and offered insights on preparedness to invest in community health improvement. RESULTS: Poorer community health was associated with high use of ED services, after controlling for age and sex. After including a summary measure of racial composition at the zip code region level, the relationship between community health and ED use became nonsignificant. No significant relationships between community health and hospitalizations or paid claims were identified. Business leaders expressed interest in further understanding health needs of communities where their employees live. CONCLUSION: The health of communities in which adult employees and dependents live was associated with ED use, but similar relationships were not seen for hospitalizations or paid claims.     Impact of Meat Consumption, Preparation, and Mutagens on Aggressive Prostate Cancer

    The association between meat consumption and prostate cancer remains unclear, perhaps reflecting heterogeneity in the types of tumors studied and the method of meat preparation—which can impact the production of carcinogens.We address both issues in this case-control study focused on aggressive prostate cancer (470 cases and 512 controls), where men reported not only their meat intake but also their meat preparation and doneness level on a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire. Associations between overall and grilled meat consumption, doneness level, ensuing carcinogens and aggressive prostate cancer were assessed using multivariate logistic regression.Higher consumption of any ground beef or processed meats were positively associated with aggressive prostate cancer, with ground beef showing the strongest association (OR = 2.30, 95% CI:1.39–3.81; P-trend = 0.002). This association primarily reflected intake of grilled or barbequed meat, with more well-done meat conferring a higher risk of aggressive prostate cancer. Comparing high and low consumptions of well/very well cooked ground beef to no consumption gave OR's of 2.04 (95% CI:1.41–2.96) and 1.51 (95% CI:1.06–2.14), respectively. In contrast, consumption of rare/medium cooked ground beef was not associated with aggressive prostate cancer. Looking at meat mutagens produced by cooking at high temperatures, we detected an increased risk with 2-amino-3,8-Dimethylimidazo-[4,5-f]Quinolaxine (MelQx) and 2-amino-3,4,8-trimethylimidazo(4,5-f)qunioxaline (DiMelQx), when comparing the highest to lowest quartiles of intake: OR = 1.69 (95% CI:1.08–2.64;P-trend = 0.02) and OR = 1.53 (95% CI:1.00–2.35; P-trend = 0.005), respectively.Higher intake of well-done grilled or barbequed red meat and ensuing carcinogens could increase the risk of aggressive prostate cancer

    S-STEM Becoming Engaged Engineering Scholars (BEES): Insights From Year 1

    The Becoming Engaged Engineering Scholars (BEES) is an NSF S-STEM project that responds to the challenges in recruiting and retaining academically talented, low-income students from diverse backgrounds into undergraduate engineering programs. The new, ABET-accredited engineering programs at Western Washington University (WWU) have faced unique challenges in recruitment and retention, particularly in the first two years for pre-engineering students. Building on the success of prior S-STEM awards in other disciplines at WWU, the proposed program provides a systematic sequence of academic, social, and career support services specifically designed to enhance the success of engineering students during these first two years of undergraduate study. The primary program goal is to ensure the engineering programs offer an equitable pathway into engineering careers, particularly for low-income, academically talented students. In addition to providing financial support for participants, the BEES program adapts existing institutional support structures to offer a one-week bridge program prior to the start of their first year, implements a multi-level mentoring system that includes internal and external mentors, engages students in multiple curricular and co-curricular activities including an engaged engineering project experience, and offers a first-year seminar focused on engineering and society. The project devotes significant resources to studying the impact of the proposed activities. Specifically, the research seeks to answer how and to what extent the program activities support retention through the end of the 2nd year of engineering study, as well as how and to what extent the program activities impact students\u27 self-efficacy, identity, and sense of belonging. In this paper, the proposed program and its various support structures are described in detail, and some insights and results from the first year of the project are reviewed and discussed

    EGO-1 is related to RNA-directed RNA polymerase and functions in germ-line development and RNA interference in C. elegans

    AbstractBackground: Cell-fate determination requires that cells choose between alternative developmental pathways. For example, germ cells in the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans choose between mitotic and meiotic division, and between oogenesis and spermatogenesis. Germ-line mitosis depends on a somatic signal that is mediated by a Notch-type signaling pathway. The ego-1 gene was originally identified on the basis of genetic interactions with the receptor in this pathway and was also shown to be required for oogenesis. Here, we provide more insight into the role of ego-1 in germ-line development.Results: We have determined the ego-1 gene structure and the molecular basis of ego-1 alleles. Putative ego-1 null mutants had multiple, previously unreported defects in germ-line development. The ego-1 transcript was found predominantly in the germ line. The predicted EGO-1 protein was found to be related to the tomato RNA-directed RNA polymerase (RdRP) and to Neurospora crassa QDE-1, two proteins implicated in post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS). For a number of germ-line-expressed genes, ego-1 mutants were resistant to a form of PTGS called RNA interference.Conclusions: The ego-1 gene is the first example of a gene encoding an RdRP-related protein with an essential developmental function. The ego-1 gene is also required for a robust response to RNA interference by certain genes. Hence, a protein required for germ-line development in C. elegans may be a component of the RNA interference/PTGS machinery

    Optimization of Ion-Exchange Protein Separations Using a Vector Quantizing Neural Network

    In this work, a previously proposed methodology for the optimization of analytical scale protein separations using ion-exchange chromatography is subjected to two challenging case studies. The optimization methodology uses a Doehlert shell design for design of experiments and a novel criteria function to rank chromatograms in order of desirability. This chromatographic optimization function (COF) accounts for the separation between neighboring peaks, the total number of peaks eluted, and total analysis time. The COF is penalized when undesirable peak geometries (i.e., skewed and/or shouldered peaks) are present as determined by a vector quantizing neural network. Results of the COF analysis are fit to a quadratic response model, which is optimized with respect to the optimization variables using an advanced Nelder and Mead simplex algorithm. The optimization methodology is tested on two case study sample mixtures, the first of which is composed of equal parts of lysozyme, conalbumin, bovine serum albumin, and transferrin, and the second of which contains equal parts of conalbumin, bovine serum albumin, tranferrin, -lactoglobulin, insulin, and R -chymotrypsinogen A. Mobile-phase pH and gradient length are optimized to achieve baseline resolution of all solutes for both case studies in acceptably short analysis times, thus demonstrating the usefulness of the empirical optimization methodology

    Metabolic Expenditures During Extravehicular Activity: Spaceflight versus Ground-based Simulation

    In general metabolic rates tend to be higher in NBL than in flight: a) Restraint method dependent; b) Significant differences between the NBL and flight for BRT and APFR (buoyancy effects); and c) No significant difference between NBL and flight for free float and SRMS/SSRMS operations. The total metabolic energy expenditure for a given task and for the EVA as a whole are similar between NBL and flight: a) NBL metabolic rates are higher, but training EVAs are constrained to 5 hours; and b) Flight metabolic rates are lower, but the EVAs are typically an hour or more longer in duration. NBL metabolic rates provide a useful operational tool for flight planning. Quantifying differences and similarities between training and flight improves knowledge for preparation of safe and efficient EVAs
