Our previous study showed that ethanol exposure inhibited embryonic angiogenesis mainly due to the excessive stimulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. In this study, we investigated whether sulforaphane (SFN), a known dietary bioactive compound, could ameliorate ethanol-suppressed angiogenesis using chick embryo angiogenesis models. Using chick yolk sac membrane (YSM) and chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) models, we demonstrated that administration of low concentrations of SFN (2.5–10 μM) alone increased angiogenesis, but high concentrations of SFN (20–40 μM) inhibited angiogenesis. SFN administration alleviated ethanol-suppressed angiogenesis and angiogenesis-related gene expression in both angiogenesis models. Ethanol exposure caused cell apoptosis in chick CAM, and the cell apoptosis could be remitted by administration of SFN. Subsequently, we demonstrated that the ethanol-induced increase in production of ROS and reduction of antioxidant enzymes’ activity were partially rescued by SFN. Similar results were obtained in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress determination, indicated by ATF6 and GRP78 expression or thapsigargin-induced ER stress in the presence or absence of SFN. Taken together, our experiments show that SFN administration can ameliorate ethanol-suppressed embryonic angiogenesis, and this is mainly achieved by alleviating excessive ROS production and ER stress. This study suggests that SFN, in appropriate concentrations, could be a potential candidate compound for preventing the negative impact of alcohol on angiogenesis

AbstractPurposeThis study examined the correlation between social relational quality and hope among patients with permanent colostomies.MethodsEighty-six eligible patients with permanent colostomies were recruited from a Class A tertiary hospital from July to December 2012. A self-designed demographic questionnaire, the Social Relational Quality Scale (SRQS), and the Herth Hope Index (HHI) were administered to all patients.ResultsThe total social relationship quality and hope scores were 49.42 ± 4.98 and 38.52 ± 4.64, respectively. The total scale score and composing subscale scores for social relationship quality and hope showed a statistically significant positive correlation with each other (r = 0.324–0.680; p < 0.01).ConclusionsA positive correlation exists between social relational quality and hope among patients with permanent colostomies. This finding suggests that such patients should be given hope and that their families should be encouraged to provide more support for better acceptance and adjustment

Experimental Study on the Feasibility of Using Water Glass and Aluminum Sulfate to Treat Complications in High Liquid Limit Soil Subgrade

The feasibility of using water glass and aluminum sulfate to treat high liquid limit soil subgrade diseases is studied through laboratory experiments, and the following results were observed. After improving the high liquid limit clay with water glass and aluminum sulfate, the liquid limit decreases, the plastic limit increases, and the plasticity index decreases. Compared with untreated soil, the clay content of the improved soil decreases, while the silt and coarse contents increase. The absolute and relative expansion rates of the improved soil are both lower than those of the untreated soil. With the same number of dry and wet cycles, the decreased degrees of cohesion and internal friction angle of the improved soil are, respectively, one-half and one-third of those of the untreated soil. After three dry and wet cycles, the California bearing ratio (CBR) of the untreated soil does not meet the requirements of specifications. However, after being cured for seven days and being subjected to three dry and wet cycles, the CBR of the improved soil, with 4% water glass solution and 0.4% aluminum sulfate, meets the requirements of specifications

Os odontoideum associated with a retro-odontoid cyst treated with posterior C1–C3 fixation: A case report and literature review

BackgroundOs odontoideum is a rare abnormality of the upper cervical spine, and os odontoideum associated with a retro-odontoid cyst has been described as a marker of local instability.Case descriptionThis paper reports a case of a 52-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with os odontoideum associated with a retro-odontoid cyst. The patient underwent posterior C1–C3 fixation without surgical removal of the cyst. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) two days later revealed that the retro-odontoid cyst was still present and that there were no significant changes to it when compared with the preoperative MRI.ConclusionRetro-odontoid cysts associated with unstable os odontoideum can lead to symptomatic spinal cord compression. Posterior C1–C3 fixation can restore atlantoaxial stability by allowing the gradual resorption of the cyst and ensuring spinal cord decompression. Fixation can also avoid the surgical risk associated with a high-riding vertebral artery

    PT-Symmetric Quantum Rabi Model

In this work, we explore the PT-symmetric quantum Rabi model (PTQRM), which describes a PT-symmetric qubit coupled to a quantized light field. By employing the adiabatic approximation (AA), we are able to solve this model analytically in the parameter regime of interest and analyze various physical aspects. We investigate the static and dynamic properties of the model, using both the AA and numerical diagonalization. Our analysis reveals a multitude of exceptional points (EPs) that are closely connected with the exactly solvable points in the Hermitian counterpart of the model. Intriguingly, these EPs vanish and revive depending on the light-matter coupling strength. Furthermore, we discuss the time evolution of physical observables under the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Our work extends the theory of PT-symmetry into the full quantum light-matter interaction regime and provides insights that can be readily enlarged to a broad class of quantum optical systems.Comment: 6+7 pages, 6+6 figure

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Toxoplasma gondii </it>is an important protozoan parasite infecting humans and almost all warm-blooded animals. As the only definitive host, cats play a crucial role in the transmission of <it>T. gondii </it>infection by shedding parasite oocysts in their feces. However, little information on <it>T. gondii </it>infection in cats was available in Lanzhou, northwest China. This study was performed to determine the seroprevalence of <it>T. gondii </it>infection in household and stray cats in Lanzhou, northwest China.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 221 (179 households and 42 strays) blood samples were collected from clinically healthy cats admitted to several pet hospitals located in Lanzhou City, between November 2010 and July 2011 for the serological detection of <it>T. gondii </it>infection. The majority (207) of these cats represented Chinese Lihua cats. 47 of 221 (21.3%) examined cats were seropositive for <it>T. gondii </it>infection using the modified agglutination test (MAT) at the cut-off of 1:25. The seroprevalence in household and stray cats was assessed to be 15.6% and 45.2%, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (<it>P <</it>0.05). The seroprevalence ranged from 15.1% to 25.8% among different age groups, but the differences were not statistically significant (<it>P ></it>0.05). Studies showed that there was no relationship between seroprevalence and the gender (<it>P ></it>0.05).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The present survey indicated the high seroprevalence of <it>T. gondii </it>in cats in Lanzhou, northwest China, which poses a threat to animal and human health. Therefore, measures should be taken to control and prevent toxoplasmosis of cats in this area.</p
