    The Yellow City' takes place in the course of one day and follows the stories of several characters. The first six chapters outline each character, giving a detailed description of who they are as individuals. The main characters are comprised of Katriona, the beautiful, and promiscuous restaurant manager who has been highly sexualized by all of the men in her life. E, or Edward, a black kid from Harlem who cannot find a way to escape his socioeconomic circumstances. Scott, a quirky, selfish finance banker who is grappling with his sexual identity. A homeless man who faces the struggles of severe mental illness and also the harshness of the New York City landscape. And Sylvie, a former mid-westerner who is fiercely codependent on her lover... This specific day happens to be highly significant to each character in some way. They all find themselves in various types of trouble or unidealistic circumstances... E gets some weed he is carrying for a dangerous, neighborhood thug stolen off him, Sylvie finds out her lover is having an affair, Scott is threatened with a gun if he doesn't extort money from his bank firm. Perhaps the biggest break is with Katriona, though, as she is approached by a disturbing man on the Subway and told that her life is in jeopardy. He threatens her, and demands that she remain aboard and tell nobody of their conversation. He mentions to her that he will return, then saunters off. Near the end of the novel their stories converge. One by one, each of the characters make their way onto the same train car. The strange man makes good on his promise and re-enters the scene, threatening to kill them all if they don't play his bizarre game, a storytelling, Russian roulette, of sorts. Both alone, and together, they try to keep themselves alive

    Qualitative research, according to Creswell, has an ever-changing definition, which is not always made clear in introductory books. He suggests that ―qualitative research begins with assumptions, a worldview, the possible use of a theoretical lens, and the study of research problems inquiring into the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem (Creswell, 2007, p. 37). Hesse-Biber and Leavy (2006, p. 49) suggest that qualitative research seeks ―to discover, explain, and generate ideas/theories about the phenomenon under investigation; [and] to understand and explain social patterns (the ‗How‘ questions).‖ According to Berg (2007, p. 8), qualitative researchers are ―most interested in how humans arrange themselves and their settings and how inhabitants of these settings make sense of their surroundings through symbols, rituals, social structures, social roles, and so forth.‖ Through qualitative techniques, Berg (2007, pp. 8-9) suggests, researchers are allowed to ―share in the understandings and perceptions of others and to explore how people structure and give meaning to their daily lives.‖ What all of these have in common, according to Creswell (2007, pp. 37-39), are some common characteristics including: natural setting, researcher as key instrument, multiple sources of data, inductive data analysis, participants‘ meanings, emergent design, theoretical lens, interpretive inquiry, and a holistic account. There are many ways to collect data, whether it is interviewing individuals, holding a focus group, observing as a participant or non-participant for observations, content analysis, or a combination of various methods. There are also different theoretical lens to begin with and various ways of analyzing the data once you have it

    The Impact of Host Diet on Wolbachia Titer in Drosophila

    While a number of studies have identified host factors that influence endosymbiont titer, little is known concerning environmental influences on titer. Here we examined nutrient impact on maternally transmitted Wolbachia endosymbionts in Drosophila. We demonstrate that Drosophila reared on sucrose- and yeast-enriched diets exhibit increased and reduced Wolbachia titers in oogenesis, respectively. The yeast-induced Wolbachia depletion is mediated in large part by the somatic TOR and insulin signaling pathways. Disrupting TORC1 with the small molecule rapamycin dramatically increases oocyte Wolbachia titer, whereas hyper-activating somatic TORC1 suppresses oocyte titer. Furthermore, genetic ablation of insulin-producing cells located in the Drosophila brain abolished the yeast impact on oocyte titer. Exposure to yeast-enriched diets altered Wolbachia nucleoid morphology in oogenesis. Furthermore, dietary yeast increased somatic Wolbachia titer overall, though not in the central nervous system.     Loop corrections for Kaluza-Klein AdS amplitudes

    Recently we conjectured the four-point amplitude of graviton multiplets in AdS5×S5{\rm AdS}_5 \times {\rm S}^5 at one loop by exploiting the operator product expansion of N=4\mathcal{N}=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Here we give the first extension of those results to include Kaluza-Klein modes, obtaining the amplitude for two graviton multiplets and two states of the first KK mode. Our method again relies on resolving the large N degeneracy among a family of long double-trace operators, for which we obtain explicit formulas for the leading anomalous dimensions. Having constructed the one-loop amplitude we are able to obtain a formula for the one-loop corrections to the anomalous dimensions of all twist five double-trace operators.Comment: 37 pages.     Apical constriction: A cell shape change that can drive morphogenesis

    Biologists have long recognized that dramatic bending of a cell sheet may be driven by even modest shrinking of the apical sides of cells. Cell shape changes and tissue movements like these are at the core of many of the morphogenetic movements that shape animal form during development, driving processes such as gastrulation, tube formation and neurulation. The mechanisms of such cell shape changes must integrate developmental patterning information in order to spatially and temporally control force production -- issues that touch on fundamental aspects of both cell and developmental biology and on birth defects research. How does developmental patterning regulate force-producing mechanisms, and what roles do such mechanisms play in development? Work on apical constriction from multiple systems including Drosophila, C. elegans, sea urchin, Xenopus, chick and mouse has begun to illuminate these issues. Here, we review this effort to explore the diversity of mechanisms of apical constriction, the diversity of roles that apical constriction plays in development, and the common themes that emerge from comparing systems

    Speech Recognition in Noise by Children with Hearing Loss as a Function of Signal-to-Noise Ratio

    As part of a larger study, the speech recognition in continuous and interrupted noise was measured for ten children with moderate-to-severe sensorineural hearing loss (HL), ages 6 to 16 years, at varying signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Children with bilateral amplification received 10 sentences at each of six SNRs with the 60 dBA noise at 180 degrees azimuth and the speech at 0 degrees azimuth. Sentences were randomly selected from a corpus of 1500 sentences taken from seven thematic categories. The continuous and interrupted speech-shaped noise was filtered to match the long-term average spectrum of the sentences. The average performance-intensity (PI) functions for the interrupted and continuous noise conditions were not significantly different. Children with HL received limited benefit from the interruptions in the noise and therefore might benefit from auditory training designed to take advantage of the silent intervals in noise. Based on the average PI function, an appropriate SNR to begin auditory training would be 6 dB

    Diffusing an Innovation: Clinician Perceptions of Continuous Predictive Analytics Monitoring in Intensive Care

    Background The purpose of this article is to describe neonatal intensive care unit clinician perceptions of a continuous predictive analytics technology and how those perceptions influenced clinician adoption. Adopting and integrating new technology into care is notoriously slow and difficult; realizing expected gains remain a challenge. Methods Semistructured interviews from a cross-section of neonatal physicians (n ¼ 14) and nurses (n ¼ 8) from a single U.S. medical center were collected 18 months following the conclusion of the predictive monitoring technology randomized control trial. Following qualitative descriptive analysis, innovation attributes from Diffusion of Innovation Theory-guided thematic development. Results Results suggest that the combination of physical location as well as lack of integration into work flow or methods of using data in care decisionmaking may have delayed clinicians from routinely paying attention to the data. Once data were routinely collected, documented, and reported during patient rounds and patient handoffs, clinicians came to view data as another vital sign. Through clinicians’ observation of senior physicians and nurses, and ongoing dialogue about data trends and patient status, clinicians learned how to integrate these data in care decision making (e.g., differential diagnosis) and came to value the technology as beneficial to care delivery. Discussion The use of newly created predictive technologies that provide early warning of illness may require implementation strategies that acknowledge the risk–benefit of treatment cliniciansmust balance and take advantage of existing clinician trainingmethods

    Weight management for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: Rationale and design for an 18 month randomized trial

    Weight management for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) has received limited attention. Studies on weight management in this population have been conducted over short time frames, in small samples with inadequate statistical power, infrequently used a randomized design, and have not evaluated the use of emerging effective dietary strategies such as pre-packaged meals (PMs). Low energy/fat PMs may be useful in individuals with IDD as they simplify meal planning, limit undesirable food choices, teach appropriate portion sizes, are convenient and easy to prepare, and when combined with fruits and vegetables provide a high volume, low energy dense meal. A randomized effectiveness trial will be conducted in 150 overweight/obese adults with mild to moderate IDD, and their study partners to compare weight loss (6 months) and weight maintenance (12 months) between 2 weight management approaches: 1. A Stop Light Diet enhanced with reduced energy/fat PMs (eSLD); and 2. A recommended care reduced energy/fat meal plan diet (RC). The primary aim is to compare weight loss (0–6 months) and weight maintenance (7–18 months) between the eSLD and RC diets. Secondarily, changes in chronic disease risk factors between the eSLD and RC diets including blood pressure, glucose, insulin, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol will be compared during both weight loss and weight maintenance. Finally, potential mediators of weight loss including energy intake, physical activity, data recording, adherence to the diet, study partner self-efficacy and daily stress related to dietary change will be explored

    Historically unprecedented Northern Gulf of Mexico hurricane activity from 650 to 1250 CE

Scientific Reports, 10(1), (2020): 19092. doi:10.1038/s41598-020-75874-0.Hurricane Michael (2018) was the first Category 5 storm on record to make landfall on the Florida panhandle since at least 1851 CE (Common Era), and it resulted in the loss of 59 lives and $25 billion in damages across the southeastern U.S. This event placed a spotlight on recent intense (exceeding Category 4 or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale) hurricane landfalls, prompting questions about the natural range in variability of hurricane activity that the instrumental record is too short to address. Of particular interest is determining whether the frequency of recent intense hurricane landfalls in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is within or outside the natural range of intense hurricane activity prior to 1851 CE. In this study, we identify intense hurricane landfalls in northwest Florida during the past 2000 years based on coarse anomaly event detection from two coastal lacustrine sediment archives. We identified a historically unprecedented period of heightened storm activity common to four Florida panhandle localities from 650 to 1250 CE and a shift to a relatively quiescent storm climate in the GOM spanning the past six centuries.
