    Why choose music? A study in parental motivation toward formal music learning and the cultural beliefs regarding its benefits.

    The purpose of this study was to examine the motivations of parents when choosing to engage their children in formal music learning, whilst exploring the cultural beliefs regarding its benefits. The study was conducted in two phases, including questionnaire distribution and a case study, involving the analysis of both numerical and verbal data. The results present four themes that emerged throughout the data collection process. These include parental opinions regarding music and academic ability, being a good parent (including aspects of opportunity and parental musical experience), the importance of a child’s right to choose their own experiences, and the influence of a love of music. The results are indicative of a particular sample only, and there are numerous implications for future research. Results contribute to the growing literature regarding parental motivation toward formal music learning, and the importance of the role of the parent in a child’s musical experience

    OBJECTIVE: To describe sleep, stress and compensatory behaviors in nurses and midwives. METHODS: The study included 41 midwives and 21 nurses working in Australian hospitals between 2005 and 2009. Participation was voluntary. All participants recorded on a daily basis their work and sleep hours, levels of stress and exhaustion, caffeine intake and use of sleep aids for a month (1,736 days, 1,002 work shifts). RESULTS: Participants reported moderate to high levels of stress and exhaustion on 20-40% of work days; experienced sleep disruption on more than 50% of work days; struggled to remain awake on 27% of work days; and suffered extreme drowsiness or experienced a near accident while travelling home on 9% of workdays. Age, perceived sleep duration and work hours were significant predictors of caffeine intake. About 60% of participants reported using sleep aids (about 20% reported taking prescription medications and 44% of nurses and 9% of midwives reported alcohol use as a sleep aid at least once during the study). Stress and workdays were significant predictors of sedative use. Overall, 22% reported being indifferent or mildly dissatisfied with their job. CONCLUSIONS: Sleep problems, high levels of stress and exhaustion and low job satisfaction are prevalent among nurses and midwives. The use of alcohol and sleeping pills as sleep aids, and the use of caffeine to help maintain alertness is also common. Nurses and midwives may use caffeine to compensate for reduced sleep, especially on workdays, and sleeping pills to cope with their daily work-related stress.OBJETIVO: Describir sueño, estrés y comportamientos compensatorios en enfermeras y parteras. Los participantes registraron diariamente las horas de trabajo, sueño, estrés y niveles de agotamiento, cafeína y uso de ayuda para dormir durante un mes (1.736 días, 1.002 turnos). RESULTADOS: Los participantes relataron de moderados a elevados niveles de estrés y de agotamiento en 20%-40% de los días de trabajo; experimentaron disturbios del sueño en más de 50% de los días de trabajo; relataron esfuerzo para permanecer despierto en 27% de los días de trabajo; y sofrieron somnolencia extrema o accidente cerca de casa en 9% de los días de trabajo. Edad, duración del sueño percibido y jornadas fueron predictores significativos de la ingestión de cafeína. Aproximadamente 60% de los participantes relataron utilizar la ayuda para dormir: cerca de 20% usaron de medicación prescripta y 44% de las enfermeras y 9% de las parteras consumirán alcohol como auxilio para dormir al menos una vez durante el estudio. Estrés y días de trabajo fueron predictores significativos del uso de sedativos. En general, 22% relataron ser indiferente, o ligeramente insatisfecho con su trabajo. CONCLUSIONES: Problemas en el sueño, estrés y agotamiento elevados y disminución en la satisfacción en el trabajo son prevalecientes. Uso de alcohol y de medicamentos para dormir, y consumo de cafeína para mantenerse alerta también es común. Enfermeras y parteras pueden usar la cafeína para compensar la reducción del sueño, especialmente en días de trabajo, y usar somníferos para compensar el estrés diario.OBJETIVO: Descrever sono, estresse e comportamentos compensatórios em enfermeiras e parteiras.     Sex and Sleep: Perceptions of Sex as a Sleep Promoting Behavior in the General Adult Population

    Objective: The main aim of this study was to explore the perceived relationship between sexual activities, sleep quality, and sleep latency in the general adult population and identify whether any gender differences exist.Participants/methods: We used a cross-sectional survey to examine the perceived relationship between sexual activity and subsequent sleep in the general adult population. Seven-hundred and seventy-eight participants (442 females, 336 males; mean age 34.5 ± 11.4 years) volunteered to complete an online anonymous survey at their convenience.Statistical Analyses: Chi square analyses were conducted to examine if there were any gender differences between sexual activities [i.e., masturbation (self-stimulation), sex with a partner without orgasm, and sex with a partner with orgasm] and self-reported sleep.Results: There were no gender differences in sleep (quality and onset) between males and females when reporting sex with a partner [χ(2)2 = 2.20, p = 0.332; χ(2)2=5.73, p = 0.057] or masturbation (self-stimulation) [χ(2)2 = 1.34, p = 0.513; χ(2)2 = 0.89, p = 0.640] involved an orgasm.Conclusions: Orgasms with a partner were associated with the perception of favorable sleep outcomes, however, orgasms achieved through masturbation (self-stimulation) were associated with the perception of better sleep quality and latency. These findings indicate that the public perceive sexual activity with orgasm precedes improved sleep outcomes. Promoting safe sexual activity before bed may offer a novel behavioral strategy for promoting sleep

    Recombination in Avian Gamma-Coronavirus Infectious Bronchitis Virus

    Recombination in the family Coronaviridae has been well documented and is thought to be a contributing factor in the emergence and evolution of different coronaviral genotypes as well as different species of coronavirus. However, there are limited data available on the frequency and extent of recombination in coronaviruses in nature and particularly for the avian gamma-coronaviruses where only recently the emergence of a turkey coronavirus has been attributed solely to recombination. In this study, the full-length genomes of eight avian gamma-coronavirus infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) isolates were sequenced and along with other full-length IBV genomes available from GenBank were analyzed for recombination. Evidence of recombination was found in every sequence analyzed and was distributed throughout the entire genome. Areas that have the highest occurrence of recombination are located in regions of the genome that code for nonstructural proteins 2, 3 and 16, and the structural spike glycoprotein. The extent of the recombination observed, suggests that this may be one of the principal mechanisms for generating genetic and antigenic diversity within IBV. These data indicate that reticulate evolutionary change due to recombination in IBV, likely plays a major role in the origin and adaptation of the virus leading to new genetic types and strains of the virus

    Zampanolide, a Microtubule-Stabilizing Agent, Is Active in Resistant Cancer Cells and Inhibits Cell Migration.

    Zampanolide, first discovered in a sponge extract in 1996 and later identified as a microtubule-stabilizing agent in 2009, is a covalent binding secondary metabolite with potent, low nanomolar activity in mammalian cells. Zampanolide was not susceptible to single amino acid mutations at the taxoid site of β-tubulin in human ovarian cancer 1A9 cells, despite evidence that it selectively binds to the taxoid site. As expected, it did not synergize with other taxoid site microtubule-stabilizing agents (paclitaxel, ixabepilone, discodermolide), but surprisingly also did not synergize in 1A9 cells with laulimalide/peloruside binding site agents either. Efforts to generate a zampanolide-resistant cell line were unsuccessful. Using a standard wound scratch assay in cell culture, it was an effective inhibitor of migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and fibroblast cells (D551). These properties of covalent binding, the ability to inhibit cell growth in paclitaxel and epothilone resistant cells, and the ability to inhibit cell migration suggest that it would be of interest to investigate zampanolide in preclinical animal models to determine if it is effective in vivo at preventing tumor growth and metastasis

    Esta investigación en acción propone un compendio de actividades con el objetivo de analizar y comprobar, desde las bases teórico-legislativas, si el aprendizaje cooperativo fomenta la interacción oral en lengua extranjera. Las actividades se han puesto en práctica en dos centros públicos de Educación Primaria en la isla de Tenerife (España). Su implementación demuestra que el trabajo cooperativo influye de manera positiva en la adquisición de esta destreza oral.This action research proposes a compendium of activities with the aim of analyzing and verifying, from the theoretical-legislative bases, if cooperative learning promotes oral interaction in a foreign language. The activities have been put into practice in two public Primary Education schools in Tenerife (Spain). Its implementation shows that cooperative work positively influences the acquisition of this oral skill

    Exercising Caution Upon Waking–Can Exercise Reduce Sleep Inertia?

    Sleep inertia, the transitional state of reduced alertness and impaired cognitive performance upon waking, is a safety risk for on-call personnel who can be required to perform critical tasks soon after waking. Sleep inertia countermeasures have previously been investigated; however, none have successfully dissipated sleep inertia within the first 15 min following waking. During this time, on-call personnel could already be driving, providing advice, or performing other safety-critical tasks. Exercise has not yet been investigated as a sleep inertia countermeasure but has the potential to stimulate the key physiological mechanisms that occur upon waking, including changes in cerebral blood flow, the cortisol awakening response, and increases in core body temperature. Here, we examine these physiological processes and hypothesize how exercise can stimulate them, positioning exercise as an effective sleep inertia countermeasure. We then propose key considerations for research investigating the efficacy of exercise as a sleep inertia countermeasure, including the need to determine the intensity and duration of exercise required to reduce sleep inertia, as well as testing the effectiveness of exercise across a range of conditions in which the severity of sleep inertia may vary. Finally, practical considerations are identified, including the recommendation that qualitative field-based research be conducted with on-call personnel to determine the potential constraints in utilizing exercise as a sleep inertia countermeasure in real-world scenarios
