CONSTRUCTIONS AND ISOMORPHISM TYPES OF IMAGES

In this thesis, we have presented our discovery of true finite homomorphic images of various permutation and monomial progenitors, such as 2*7: D14, 2*7 : (7 : 2), 2*6 : S3 x 2, 2*8: S4, 2*72: (32:(2S4)), and 11*2 :m D10. We have given delightful symmetric presentations and very nice permutation representations of these images which include, the Mathieu groups M11, M12, the 4-fold cover of the Mathieu group M22, 2 x L2(8), and L2(13). Moreover, we have given constructions, by using the technique of double coset enumeration, for some of the images, including M11 and M12. We have given proofs, either by hand or computer-based, of the isomorphism type of each image. In addition, we use Iwasawa\u27s Lemma to prove that L2(13) over A5, L2(8) over D14, L2(13) over D14, L2(27) over 2D14, and M11 over 2S4 are simple groups. All of the work presented in this thesis is original to the best of our knowledge

Laying the Foundation: The Private Rental Market and Affordable Housing

The private rental housing market plays a critical, and often overlooked, role in shaping the lives of the poor and the surrounding community. This brief Article presents Matthew Desmond’s rich portrayal of low-income tenants and their landlords in his groundbreaking new book, Evicted, which shows how poor housing conditions and cycles of eviction impact poor families. The Article, which also draws upon Courtney Anderson’s work connecting housing instability with problematic student turnover at an elementary school, highlights the importance of story-telling. Without some sort of subsidy to cover the gap between the ability of the poor to pay for housing and the costs of construction and maintenance, the private market cannot supply additional affordable housing. Arguably, in such a reality, it is imperative that scholars make the choice Desmond made: to deliberately de-emphasize empirical studies and instead rely on stories to put human faces on the suffering connected to the existing structure of lowincome private rental housing

Aid for trade and the political economy of trade liberalization

The Aid for Trade (AfT) initiative has gained much popularity since its launch at the World Trade Organization's Ministerial Conference in 2005, and there are ongoing discussions on its effectiveness and potential to improve the integration of developing countries into the world economy. This paper contributes to the debate by analyzing AfT in a political economy context. We find that the delivery of AfT is a precondition for trade reform in developing countries, as well as for trade liberalization and trade-enhancing rule-making in regional and international forums. Accordingly, AfT may be a catalyst of trade reforms domestically and internationally. --Aid for Trade,Trade Liberalization,Trade Policy,Trade Reform
