    Comparative investigation of the coupled-tetrahedra quantum spin systems Cu2Te2O5X2, X=Cl, Br and Cu4Te5O12Cl4

    We present a comparative study of the coupled-tetrahedra quantum spin systems Cu2Te2O5X2, X=Cl, Br (Cu-2252(X)) and the newly synthesized Cu4Te5O12Cl4 (Cu-45124(Cl)) based on ab initio Density Functional Theory calculations. The magnetic behavior of Cu-45124(Cl) with a phase transition to an ordered state at a lower critical temperature Tc_c=13.6K than in Cu-2252(Cl) (Tc_c=18K) can be well understood in terms of the modified interaction paths. We identify the relevant structural changes between the two systems and discuss the hypothetical behavior of the not yet synthesized Cu-45124(Br) with an ab initio relaxed structure using Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure; submitted to Proceedings of M2S-HTSC VIII, Dresden 200

    While plants produce complex cocktails of chemical defences with different targets and efficacies, the biochemical effects of phytotoxin ingestion are often poorly understood. Here, we examine the physiological and metabolic effects of the ingestion of glucosinolates (GSLs), the frontline chemical defenses of brassicas (crucifers), on the generalist herbivore Helicoverpa armigera. We focus on kale and cabbage, two crops with similar foliar GSL concentrations but strikingly different GSL compositions. We observed that larval growth and development were well correlated with the nutritional properties of the insect diets, with low protein contents appearing to exacerbate the negative effects of GSLs on growth, pupation and adult eclosion, parameters that were all delayed upon exposure to GSLs. The different GSLs were metabolized similarly by the insect, indicating that the costs of detoxification via conjugation to glutathione (GSH) were similar on the two plant diets. Nevertheless, larval GSH contents, as well as some major nutritional markers (larval protein, free amino acids, and fat), were differentially affected by the different GSL profiles in the two crops. Therefore, the interplay between GSL and the nitrogen/sulfur nutritional availability of different brassicas strongly influences the effectiveness of these chemical defenses against this generalist herbivore

    Prognostic relevance of disseminated tumor cells in the bone marrow and biological factors of 265 primary breast carcinomas

    Introduction The prognostic significance of disseminated tumor cells in the bone marrow (DTC-BM) of breast cancer patients has been demonstrated in many studies. Yet, it is not clear which of the primary tumors' biological factors predict hematogenous dissemination. We therefore examined `tissue micro arrays' (TMAs) of 265 primary breast carcinomas from patients with known bone marrow ( BM) status for HER2, Topoisomerase IIa ( Top IIa), Ki 67, and p53. Methods BM analysis was performed by cytospin preparation and immunocytochemical staining for cytokeratin (CK). TMAs were examined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for HER2, Top IIa, Ki 67 and p53, and fluorescence in situ hybridization ( FISH) for HER2. Results HER2 ( 2+/ 3+) was positive in 35/167 (21%) cases ( FISH 24.3%), Top IIa (> 10%) in 87/187 (46%), Ki 67 in 52/ 184 (28%) and p53 (> 5%) in 61/174 cases (34%). Of 265 patients, 68 (25.7%) showed DTC-BM with a median of 2/2 x 106 cells ( 1 to 1,500). None of the examined factors significantly predicted BM positivity. Significant correlation was seen between HER2 IHC and Top IIa ( p = 0.06), Ki 67 ( p = 0.031), and p53 ( p <.001). Top IIa correlated with Ki 67 and p53, and Ki 67 also with p53 ( p = 0.004). After a median follow-up of 60.5 months ( 7 to 255), the presence of DTC-BM showed prognostic relevance for overall survival ( p = 0.03), whereas HER2 ( IHC, p = 0.04; FISH, p = 0.03) and Ki 67 ( p = 0.04) correlated with disease free survival, and HER2 with distant disease free survival ( IHC, p = 0.06; FISH, p = 0.05). Discussion The congruence of the examined factors' expression rates indicates a causal line of suppressor, proliferation, and mitosis markers, and growth factor receptors. Hematogenous tumor cell spread seems to be an independent process. The examination of these factors on DTC-BM is the aim of ongoing research

    Critical Phenomena at the Antiferromagnetic Phase Transition of Azurite

    We report on high-resolution acoustic, specific-heat and thermal expansion measurements in the vicinity of the antiferromagnetic phase transition at T_N = 1.88 K on a high-quality single crystal of the natural mineral azurite. A detailed investigation of the critical contribution to the various quantities at T_N is presented. The set of critical exponents and amplitude ratios of the singular contributions above and below the transition indicate that the system can be reasonably well described by a three-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, proceedings of ICM 2012, JKP

    Theory for the ultrafast ablation of graphite films

    The physical mechanisms for damage formation in graphite films induced by femtosecond laser pulses are analyzed using a microscopic electronic theory. We describe the nonequilibrium dynamics of electrons and lattice by performing molecular dynamics simulations on time-dependent potential energy surfaces. We show that graphite has the unique property of exhibiting two distinct laser induced structural instabilities. For high absorbed energies (> 3.3 eV/atom) we find nonequilibrium melting followed by fast evaporation.     Distinct magnetic regimes through site-selective atom substitution in the frustrated quantum antiferromagnet Cs2_2CuCl4x_{4-x}Brx_x

    We report on a systematic study of the magnetic properties on single crystals of the solid solution Cs2_2CuCl4x_{4-x}Brx_x (0 \leq x \leq 4), which include the two known end-member compounds Cs2_2CuCl4_4 and Cs2_2CuBr4_4, classified as quasi-two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets with different degrees of magnetic frustration. By comparative measurements of the magnetic susceptibility χ\chi(TT) on as many as eighteen different Br concentrations, we found that the inplane and out-of-plane magnetic correlations, probed by the position and height of a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility, respectively, do not show a smooth variation with x. Instead three distinct concentration regimes can be identified, which are separated by critical concentrations xc1_{c1} = 1 and xc2_{c2} = 2. This unusual magnetic behavior can be explained by considering the structural peculiarities of the materials, especially the distorted Cu-halide tetrahedra, which support a site-selective replacement of Cl- by Br- ions. Consequently, the critical concentrations xc1_{c1} (xc2_{c2}) mark particularly interesting systems, where one (two) halidesublattice positions are fully occupied.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Molecular Changes in Pre-Metastatic Lymph Nodes of Esophageal Cancer Patients

    Lymph node metastasis indicates poor prognosis in esophageal cancer. To understand the underlying mechanisms, most studies so far focused on investigating the tumors themselves and/or invaded lymph nodes. However they neglected the potential events within the metastatic niche, which precede invasion. Here we report the first description of these regulations in patients on transcription level. We determined transcriptomic profiles of still metastasis-free regional lymph nodes for two patient groups: patients classified as pN1 (n = 9, metastatic nodes exist) or pN0 (n = 5, no metastatic nodes exist). All investigated lymph nodes, also those from pN1 patients, were still metastasis-free. The results show that regional lymph nodes of pN1 patients differ decisively from those of pN0 patients--even before metastasis has taken place. In the pN0 group distinct immune response patterns were observed. In contrast, lymph nodes of the pN1 group exhibited a clear profile of reduced immune response and reduced proliferation, but increased apoptosis, enhanced hypoplasia and morphological conversion processes. DKK1 was the most significant gene associated with the molecular mechanisms taking place in lymph nodes of patients suffering from metastasis (pN1). We assume that the two molecular profiles observed constitute different stages of a progressive disease. Finally we suggest that DKK1 might play an important role within the mechanisms leading to lymph node metastasis

    Band structure of semimagnetic Hg1-yMnyTe quantum wells

    The band structure of semimagnetic Hg_1-yMn_yTe/Hg_1-xCd_xTe type-III quantum wells has been calculated using eight-band kp model in an envelope function approach. Details of the band structure calculations are given for the Mn free case (y=0). A mean field approach is used to take the influence of the sp-d exchange interaction on the band structure of QW's with low Mn concentrations into account. The calculated Landau level fan diagram and the density of states of a Hg_0.98Mn_0.02Te/Hg_0.3Cd_0.7Te QW are in good agreement with recent experimental transport observations. The model can be used to interpret the mutual influence of the two-dimensional confinement and the sp-d exchange interaction on the transport properties of Hg_1-yMn_yTe/Hg_1-xCd_xTe QW's.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
