TEORIA WZMOCNIENIA JEDNOFOLIOWEGO DETEKTORA Z GAZOWYM POWIELANIEM ELEKTRONÓW
Gain prediction theory of single foil Gas Electron Multiplier detector was developed. Gas electron multiplier (GEM) detector with single foil was developed. Soft X-ray spectra with an energy of 5.9 keV emitted by the isotope Fe-55 were measured. On this basis, the dependence of gain and energy resolution from the detector voltage was determined. The simple theory of gain dependence on various detector parameters was developed. Preliminary results of the study confirmed the potential usefulness of the GEM detector as a substitute for the multiwire proportional chamber.
Satisfaction and discontent of Polish patients with biological therapy of rheumatic diseases : results of a multi-center questionnaire study
Objectives: Biologics are medications widely applied in the management of inflammatory rheumatic
diseases. The drugs were found to be effective but their application is associated with some
disadvantages. Medication with biologics is relatively expensive, and in Poland, it is carried out in
specialized centers. The study was designed to evaluate various aspects of satisfaction and dissatisfaction
of Polish patients treated with biologics.
Material and methods: An anonymous questionnaire was distributed in 23 Polish rheumatological
centers involved in the treatment; 1212 returned questionnaires were used for analysis. Responses
were received from 606 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 427 with ankylosing spondylitis,
117 psoriatic arthritis, and 62 adult patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (in whom administration
of the drugs had been introduced before they were 18 years old). The investigated group
constituted about one-fifth of all rheumatic patients on biologics in Poland.
Results: A beneficial or very beneficial influence of the medication on the state of physical health
was found mostly in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (51.3 and 30.5%) and ankylosing spondylitis
(51.0 and 36.8%). Family life was improved by the treatment especially in patients with ankylosing
spondylitis (40.7 and 35.6% beneficial and very beneficial, respectively), sleep quality and sexual
life mostly in those with ankylosing spondylitis (beneficial/very beneficial influence 41.5/38.4, and
38.7/23.9, respectively). There was a rather small influence of biological treatment on the financial
situation of the patients. In general, satisfaction with the treatment was evaluated as positive or
very positive in 88% of all investigated patients.
In a significant part of the patients, transportation to the medical center was considered as a disadvantage
of the treatment. About one-third of the patients considered laboratory and imaging tests
to be done before initiation of the medication as a difficulty, and for about 40% waiting time for
qualification for the medication was a significant disadvantage. The route of drug administration
was without importance for 4/5 of the patients.
Conclusions: Summing up, the results were similar in the patients suffering from various diseases
although those with psoriatic arthritis felt the highest satisfaction (possibly due to the positive
aesthetic effect), and those with ankylosing spondylitis had significant improvement in sexual life
(probably due to younger age). Relatively low satisfaction was found in patients with juvenile idiopathic
arthritis. There was a small influence of medication on financial status of the patients. Application
of biologics has few disadvantages and most of them are associated with the organization of
health services (waiting time for the tests, transportation to the medical centers)
Hard Protective Layers on Forging Dies—Development and Applications
The article presents a summary of many years of activities in the area of increasing the durability of forging dies. The results of comprehensive research work on the analysis of the destructive mechanisms of forging dies and the possibility of increasing their durability with the use of modern surface engineering methods are presented. Great possibilities in terms of shaping operational properties of forging dies by producing hybrid layers of the “Nitrided Layer + PVD Coating” (NL + PVD coating) type were confirmed. An analysis of changes in forging dies durability under various operating conditions was performed, i.e., forging—die—forging press—pressures. It has been shown that the variety of parameters of the forging process, including forgings’ geometry and weight, materials, precision, pressures applied, and, what is very important, quality of machines, makes it very difficult to compare the effectiveness of various PVD coating solutions in the process of increasing the durability of forging dies. Hybrid layers of the “NL + PVD coating” type create great possibilities in shaping the operational properties of tools and machine elements. However, in each application a precise diagnosis of the wear mechanism and the design of an individual PVD coating material solution is required

Evaluation of the Fracture Toughness KIc for Selected Magnetron Sputtering Coatings by Using the Laugier Model
Nanoindentation is one of the methods that allows for determining the fracture properties of brittle materials. In this article, the authors present the possibility of the fracture toughness coefficient calculation of ceramic-based coatings doped by metal (W, Cr) by using the nanoindentation method with the Berkovich diamond indenter. The mechanical properties of selected coatings, such as hardness and Young’s modulus, were investigated from nanohardness experiments. We analyzed the brittle fracture, which includes changes in hardness (H), Young’s modulus (E), plasticity index H/E and resistance to plastic deformation H3/E2, enabled the concentration of tungsten and chromium. Due to the size of the indentation and the size of the initial cracks, it is necessary to use Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to observe and measure the indentations made and the generated cracks. For evaluation of the fracture toughness in mode I, the Laugier model was chosen experimentally. The fracture toughness analysis showed that doping with concentrations of 10% W and 10% Cr causes an increase in the fracture toughness for KIc = 4.98 for TiBW (10%) and KIc = 6.23 for TiBCr (10%)
The Analysis of Resistance to Brittle Cracking of Tungsten Doped TiB2 Coatings Obtained by Magnetron Sputtering
In this work, the authors present the possibility of characterization of the fracture toughness in mode I (KIC) for TiB2 and TiB2 coatings doped with different concentration of W (3%, 6% and 10%). The Young’s modulus, hardness and fracture toughness of this coatings are extracted from nanoindentation experiments. The fracture toughness was evaluated using calculation of crack length measurement. An important observation is that increasing tungsten concentration in the range 0–10% changes the microstructure of the investigated coatings: from columnar structure for TiB2 coating to nano-composite structure for Ti-B-W (10%) coating. It can be concluded that doping with concentration 10 at.% W causes an increase of the fracture toughness for the tested coatings
