    What Inspires Leisure Time Invention?

    This paper seeks to understand the intriguing but only sparsely explored phenomenon of “leisure time invention,” where the main underlying idea for the new product or process occurs when the inventor is away from the workplace. We add to previous research by focussing on the inventive creativity of the individual researcher, and reassessing the image of researchers inventing during unpaid time – who have often been dispatched as “hobbyists”. Based on the responses from a survey of over 3,000 German inventors, we tested hypotheses on the conditions under which leisure time invention is likely to arise. Results suggest that the incidence of leisure time invention is positively related to exposure to a variety of knowledge inputs – but, surprisingly, not to the quality of prior inventive output. Leisure time inventions are more frequently observed in conceptual-based technologies than in science-based technologies, in smaller R&D projects, and in externally financed R&D projects

    Common assumption of rationality

    In this paper, we provide an epistemic characterization of iterated admissibility (IA), i.e., iterated elimination of weakly dominated strategies. We show that rationality and common assumption of rationality (RCAR) in complete lexicographic type structures implies IA, and that there exist such structures in which RCAR can be satisfied. Our result is unexpected in light of a negative result in Brandenburger, Friedenberg, and Keisler (2008) (BFK) that shows the impossibility of RCAR in complete continuous structures. We also show that every complete structure with RCAR has the same types and beliefs as some complete continuous structure. This enables us to reconcile and interpret the difference between our results and BFK’s. Finally, we extend BFK’s framework to obtain a single structure that contains a complete structure with an RCAR state for every game.     England’s citizenship education experiment: active citizenship or service?

    This chapter compares the English tradition of active citizenship education (embodied in the national curriculum for Citizenship) with the US tradition of service-learning. Following some initial observations about the different traditions in the two countries the chapter focuses on three significant issues which are common to both traditions: (a) the type of experience which educators should facilitate; (b) the relationship between that experience and citizenship education; and (c) the pedagogy of experiential learning. The concluding section makes some suggestions as to why, given there are such significant shared educational and political concerns, the English educational community have not connected more positively with the longer established tradition of service-learning

    Making sense of the impact agenda in UK higher education: a case study of preventing violent extremism policy in schools

    Purpose: This article explores the policy context in the UK around securing impact from academic research, particularly from the perspective of a social science education researcher. Approach: The article locates impact studies within debates about broader accountability frameworks. Insights from this literature are applied to a case study about Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) policy. Findings: Linear models of ‘impact’ are problematic for social science education researchers (especially (ex) school teachers) for several reasons. First, research and impact may be intertwined, especially in broader development work with practitioners. Second, impact in schools and on learners is often difficult to measure. Third, it is not always clear how the research contributes to impact, as opposed to other roles or activities in professional communities. Implications: Formal impact case studies for institutional evaluation are likely to provide only a partial account of the myriad impacts (and attempts to secure impact) of a researcher

    A Renormalization group approach for highly anisotropic 2D Fermion systems: application to coupled Hubbard chains

    I apply a two-step density-matrix renormalization group method to the anisotropic two-dimensional Hubbard model. As a prelude to this study, I compare the numerical results to the exact one for the tight-binding model. I find a ground-state energy which agrees with the exact value up to four digits for systems as large as 24×2524 \times 25. I then apply the method to the interacting case. I find that for strong Hubbard interaction, the ground-state is dominated by magnetic correlations. These correlations are robust even in the presence of strong frustration. Interchain pair tunneling is negligible in the singlet and triplet channels and it is not enhanced by frustration. For weak Hubbard couplings, interchain non-local singlet pair tunneling is enhanced and magnetic correlations are strongly reduced.     Global analysis of mRNA decay rates and RNA-binding specificity reveals novel roles for CUGBP1 and PARN deadenylase in muscle cells

    2011 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.Type I Myotonic Dystrophy (DM1) is characterized by myotonia, cardiac conduction defects, muscle wasting, and insulin resistance. In patient muscle cells expression and function of the RNA-binding proteins CUGBP1 and MBNL1 are disrupted, resulting in altered mRNA metabolism at the levels of splicing and translation. Intriguingly, despite strong evidence for CUGBP1 being a regulator of mRNA turnover in humans and other organisms, the possibility that defects in mRNA decay contribute to DM1 pathogenesis has not been investigated to date. As such, we sought to further characterize the roles of CUGBP1 and its partner, the deadenylase PARN, in mRNA decay in mouse C2C12 muscle cells. The TNF message, which encodes a cytokine known to cause muscle wasting and insulin resistance when over-expressed, was stabilized by depletion of CUGBP1. The normally rapid decay of the TNF mRNA was also disrupted in cells treated with phorbol ester and this coincided with phosphorylation of CUGBP1. These findings provided impetus to undertake a global analysis of mRNA decay rates in muscle cells. Our investigation revealed that GU- and AU-rich sequence elements are enriched in labile transcripts, which encode cell cycle regulators, transcription factors, and RNA-processing proteins. Transcripts specifically bound to CUGBP1 in myoblasts are linked with processes such as mRNA metabolism, protein targeting to the endoplasmic reticulum, cytoskeletal organization, and transcriptional regulation, all of which have implications for muscle cell biology. Consistent with this, CUGBP1 depletion profoundly altered the formation of myotubes during differentiation. Finally we investigated whether PARN, which interacts with CUGBP1 and mediates rapid deadenylation of TNF in HeLa cell extracts, also plays a role in mediating mRNA decay in muscle. We identified 64 mRNA targets whose decay was dependent on PARN. Moreover, deadenylation of the Brf2 mRNA was impaired in PARN knock-down cells supporting that this mRNA is directly and specifically targeted for decay by PARN. Taken together our findings demonstrate that CUGBP1 and PARN are critical regulators of decay for specific sets of transcripts in muscle cells. It seems likely that some or all of the CUGBP1 targets we have identified may be affected in myotonic dystrophy. Defective mRNA turnover could be linked with defects in myogenesis, TNF over-expression, muscle wasting and/or ER stress, all of which have been documented in DM1
