    Get PDF
Numerous aspects of design and delivery of online instruction are well researched but little exists on power relations of electronic versus face-to-face discussions and consequences for learning. This case study centers on the experiences of participants in a graduate course in human resource management. Implications for reconsidering prevailing views of adult education are discussed

Screen to Screen: A Study of Designer/Instructor Beliefs and Actions in Internet-based Courses

    Get PDF
This study explored the belief systems underlying Internet-based courses faculty chose to develop and deliver, and how these belief systems influenced the process. With a sample drawn from faculty of a university recognized as a leader in distance learning, this study examined course syllabi, results from designer/instructor philosophy inventories, and faculty interviews to produce instructor profiles of philosophical orientation and instructional strategies. It then explored how the instructor/designer’s belief systems regarding the effective teaching of adults changed as a result of teaching online

Hitting the TARGET? A Case Study of the Experiences of Teachers in Steel Mill Learning Centers

    Get PDF
This paper begins an analysis of the development of professional identity among teachers and coordinators in steel mill learning programs. Teachers and coordinators all have an extreme flexibility in thinking about their own careers and in dealing with the issues that arise in the workplace. They have worked to develop a sense of vision and a philosophy of adult education that allows them to connect with the learners while working at some semblance of professional growth

Ex ante accounting information in analyzing distribution choices: case US logistics center

    Get PDF
Effective management accounting requires that scarce organizational resources are actively directed towards creating information with most managerial value. This master’s thesis therefore seeks to further the understanding of how managers utilize ex ante accounting information and what information qualities managers consider most important. This is done by creating ex ante accounting information for a case company and later analyzing its use and the associated quality requirements. The first research question of the thesis is: how should different product configurations be distributed to the US market to ensure long-term profitability? This research question addresses the case company’s uncertainties regarding an expansion of US operations and seeks to identify general guidelines for feature option distribution. The second research question is: how do managers use ex ante accounting information in decision making, and what kind of requirements a new decision-making situation sets for ex ante accounting information? The case company situation studied in the first research question is used to analyze the use and requirements for ex ante accounting information. The objective is to further the understanding of how ex ante accounting information is used in decision making and to provide insights with which management accountants can effectively create valuable ex ante accounting information. The findings indicate that product configuration related distribution-decisions should be based on analyzing the dynamic in which different configurations affect profitability and the operational challenges associated with distribution alternatives. In the sample case, this meant distributing feature options in a way that maximizes the overall sales of the case company’s product families. Studying the use of accounting information showed that managers mainly utilize ex ante accounting information for learning about issue at hand by identifying and weighing factors affecting it. This information is then used to direct attention and analysis. Ex ante accounting information is also used for setting financial boundaries in which decision-alternatives should reside for a more detailed analysis to take place. These uses display in the associated quality requirements. While reasonable accuracy is expected, completeness and believability of accounting information were considered most important. These quality factors work as enablers for trust to be given to the accounting objects representing an uncertain phenomenon and for the information to be used. Representational quality supports in establishing trust in the accounting objects and supports the knowledge integration when creating ex ante accounting objects. Based on the empirical findings, a four-step process model is presented for efficiently creating valuable ex ante accounting information

Anti-Corruption Efforts and Russian Perceptions: Presidents Putin and Menvedev\u27s Efforts to Influence Perceptions of Corruption

    Get PDF
The problems affecting Russia because of corruption are serious and pressing. Police officers, judges, government officials, and many others are involved in taking bribes for services or benefits they provide. These actions are contrary to the laws they are to follow, and they are preventing the rule of law from operating properly in Russia. In order to resolve this issue Russia needs to understand how corruption works against national progress, how society perceives the efforts of Russian presidents in the battle against corruption, and how those perceptions can be utilized to help improve the situation

Epstein - Barr Virus Expression and Correlation with the Immunohistochemical Profile of Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Five Year Study

INTRODUCTION : Hodgkin lymphoma constitutes around 1% of all cancers worldwide and about 12% of lymphomas. It is characterized by heterogeneous cellularity comprising of small quantity of specific neoplastic cells, the Reed Sternberg cells. There are many evidences based on Epidemiology, molecular studies and immunologic assays which link Hodgkin lymphoma to EBV infection. Histochemical assays are often used for localizing EBV nucleic acid as well as the protein in the malignant Reed Sternberg /Hodgkin cell. EBV virus expresses latent membrane protein which can be detected immunohistochemically or by EBER, which is the viral RNA detected by in situ hybridization. AIM AND OBJECTIVES : To analyze the expression pattern of Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) Latent Membrane Protein 1(LMP1) and Ki-67 in various histologic subtypes of Hodgkin lymphoma and to compare the expression of LMP1 with CD15 and CD30 expression of HRS cells in Hodgkin lymphoma. METHODS : Blocks of 34 cases of Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosed between January 2011 to December 2015 were retrieved. Immunohistochemical staining for LMP1 and Ki-67 was done and it was correlated with parameters such as histopathological type, sex, age and stage of the disease. RESULTS : LMP1 positivity was seen in 22 out of 34 cases studied. Maximum EBV expression was seen in mixed cellularity subtype (50%). There was no significant gender predilection in EBV expression.CD15, CD30 and LMP1 were positive in 13 cases. There was a positive correlation between EBV expression and Ki-67 proliferative index with a high statistical significance (p value < .01) High Ki-67 index was more commonly seen in EBV associated Hodgkin lymphoma. CONCLUSION : Hence our study justifies the role of EBV in the oncogenesis of Hodgkin lymphoma. More elaborate and extensive studies are warranted to further emphasize this theory
