Inelastic scattering in a monolayer graphene sheet; a weak-localization study
Charge carriers in a graphene sheet, a single layer of graphite, exhibit much
distinctive characteristics to those in other two-dimensional electronic
systems because of their chiral nature. In this report, we focus on the
observation of weak localization in a graphene sheet exfoliated from a piece of
natural graphite and nano-patterned into a Hall-bar geometry. Much stronger
chiral-symmetry-breaking elastic intervalley scattering in our graphene sheet
restores the conventional weak localization. The resulting carrier-density and
temperature dependence of the phase coherence length reveal that the
electron-electron interaction including a direct Coulomb interaction is the
main inelastic scattering factor while electron-hole puddles enhance the
inelastic scattering near the Dirac point.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PR

Orbital Interaction and Electron Density Transfer in PdII([9]aneB2A)L2 Complexes: Theoretical Approaches
The geometric structures of Pd-complexes {Pd([9]aneB2A)L2 and Pd([9]aneBAB)L2 where A = P, S; B = N; L = PH3, P(CH3)3, Cl−}, their selective orbital interaction towards equatorial or axial (soft A…Pd) coordination of macrocyclic [9]aneB2A tridentate to PdL2, and electron density transfer from the electron-rich trans L-ligand to the low-lying unfilled a1g(5s)-orbital of PdL2 were investigated using B3P86/lanl2DZ for Pd and 6-311+G** for other atoms. The pentacoordinate endo-[Pd([9]aneB2A)(L-donor)2]2+ complex with an axial (soft A--Pd) quasi-bond was optimized for stability. The fifth (soft A--Pd) quasi-bond between the σ-donor of soft A and the partially unfilled a1g(5s)-orbital of PdL2 was formed. The pentacoordinate endo-Pd([9]aneB2A)(L-donor)2]2+ complex has been found to be more stable than the corresponding tetracoordinate endo-Pd complexes. Except for the endo-Pd pentacoordinates, the tetracoordinate Pd([9]aneBAB)L2 complex with one equatorial (soft A-Pd) bond is found to be more stable than the Pd([9]aneB2A)L2 isomer without the equatorial (A-Pd) bond. In particular, the geometric configuration of endo-[Pd([9]anePNP)(L-donor)2]2+ could not be optimized
Chronicle of a Soil Bacterium: Paenibacillus polymyxa E681 as a Tiny Guardian of Plant and Human Health
The Gram-positive rhizosphere bacterium Paenibacillus polymyxa promotes plant growth and produces various antibiotics. Herein, we review research on this species over the past two and a half decades, and focus on the mechanisms of P. polymyxa strain E681, isolated from barley roots in the South Korea in 1995. Strain E681 has outstanding growth-promoting effects on barley, cucumber, pepper, sesame, and Arabidopsis thaliana and produces antimicrobial compounds that protect plants against pathogenic fungi, oomycetes, and bacteria. Induced systemic resistance elicited by treating seeds or roots with strain E681 is a possible mechanism for protecting systemic plant tissues from biotic and other environmental stresses. Genome sequencing has broadened our horizons for antibiotic development and other industrial applications beyond agricultural use. At least six gene clusters for the biosynthesis of antibiotics have been discovered, including polymyxin (pmx), which was recently re-instated as an antibiotic of last resort against Gram-negative drug-resistant bacteria. Three groups of antibiotic synthetases include the gene clusters that encode one for the non-ribosomal peptide polymyxin, fusaricidin, and tridecaptin, another for the lantibiotic paenilan, and the third for a polyketide. We successfully introduced the pmx gene cluster into the surrogate host Bacillus subtilis and created polymyxin derivatives by domain swapping. Furthermore, various E681 derivatives, including a high fusaricidin producer and strains lacking multi-antibiotics production, have been constructed by random mutagenesis and genome engineering. Thus, E681 is an important bacterium that contributes to both plant and human health
Proto-type installation of a double-station system for the optical-video-detection and orbital characterisation of a meteor/fireball in South Korea
We give a detailed description of the installation and operation of a
double-station meteor detection system which formed part of a research &
education project between Korea Astronomy Space Science Institute and Daejeon
Science Highschool. A total of six light-sensitive CCD cameras were installed
with three cameras at SOAO and three cameras at BOAO observatory. A
double-station observation of a meteor event enables the determination of the
three-dimensional orbit in space. This project was initiated in response to the
Jinju fireball event in March 2014. The cameras were installed in
October/November 2014. The two stations are identical in hardware as well as
software. Each station employes sensitive Watec-902H2 cameras in combination
with relatively fast f/1.2 lenses. Various fields of views were used for
measuring differences in detection rates of meteor events. We employed the
SonotaCo UFO software suite for meteor detection and their subsequent analysis.
The system setup as well as installation/operation experience is described and
first results are presented. We also give a brief overview of historic as well

Elevated intracellular cAMP exacerbates vulnerability to oxidative stress in optic nerve head astrocytes.
Glaucoma is characterized by a progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells and their axons, but the underlying biological basis for the accompanying neurodegeneration is not known. Accumulating evidence indicates that structural and functional abnormalities of astrocytes within the optic nerve head (ONH) have a role. However, whether the activation of cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) signaling pathway is associated with astrocyte dysfunction in the ONH remains unknown. We report here that the cAMP/protein kinase A (PKA) pathway is critical to ONH astrocyte dysfunction, leading to caspase-3 activation and cell death via the AKT/Bim/Bax signaling pathway. Furthermore, elevated intracellular cAMP exacerbates vulnerability to oxidative stress in ONH astrocytes, and this may contribute to axonal damage in glaucomatous neurodegeneration. Inhibition of intracellular cAMP/PKA signaling activation protects ONH astrocytes by increasing AKT phosphorylation against oxidative stress. These results strongly indicate that activation of cAMP/PKA pathway has an important role in astrocyte dysfunction, and suggest that modulating cAMP/PKA pathway has therapeutic potential for glaucomatous ONH degeneration

Resonant two-photon ionization and laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy of jet-cooled adenine
Resonant two-photon ionization (R2PI) and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) techniques were used to obtain the electronic spectra of the jet-cooled DNA base adenine. The spectrum consisted of two bands of the n??* and ????* characters. The vibronic mixing between the two states resulted in the broad absorption whose onset was located 1100 cm -1 above the n??* origin. The presence of these electronically states revealed the presence of vibronic mixing.open12813
