    Enhanced black state induced by spatial silver nanoparticles in an electrochromic device

    The use of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical indium tin oxide (ITO) branches of electrochromic devices (ECDs) is an effective approach for increasing the optical properties via localized surface plasmon resonance compared with two- dimensional nanostructured electrodes. ECDs with 3D branches were designed to operate in transparent, mirror and black states. Finite- difference time- domain simulation was used to find the electrical field distributions in three types of ECD: glass/ITO with Ag film, glass/ITO branches and glass/ITO branches with Ag nanoparticles. The ECDs had an optical transmittance of 73.76% in the transparent state, a reflectance of 79.77% in the mirror state and a reflectance of 8.78% in the black state. We achieved an ECD with high stability that can show similar to 10 000 switching cycles among the three states.113Ysciescopu

    Slim Body Weight Is Highly Associated With Enhanced Lipoprotein Functionality, Higher HDL-C, and Large HDL Particle Size in Young Women

    There has been no information about the correlations between body weight distribution and lipoprotein metabolism in terms of high-density lipoproteins-cholesterol (HDL-C) and cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP). In this study, we analyzed the quantity and quality of HDL correlations in young women (21.5 ± 1.2-years-old) with a slim (n = 21, 46.2 ± 3.8 kg) or plump (n = 30, 54.6 ± 4.4 kg) body weight. Body weight was inversely correlated with the percentage of HDL-C in total cholesterol (TC). The plump group showed 40% higher body fat (26 ± 3 %) and 86% more visceral fat mass (VFM, 1.3 ± 0.3 kg) than the slim group, which showed 18 ± 2% body fat and 0.7 ± 0.2 kg of VFM. Additionally, the plump group showed 20% higher TC, 58% higher triglyceride (TG), and 12% lower HDL-C levels in serum. The slim group showed 34% higher apoA-I but 15% lower CETP content in serum compared to the plump group. The slim group showed a 13% increase in particle size and 1.9-fold increase in particle number with enhanced cholesterol efflux activity. Although the plump group was within a normal body mass index (BMI) range, its lipid profile and lipoprotein properties were distinctly different from those of the slim group in terms of CETP mass and activity, HDL functionality, and HDL particle size

    An InGaAs/InP p-i-n-JFET OEIC with a wing-shaped p+-InP layer

    A new receiver OEIC structure with an InGaAs p-i-n photodiode, InGaAs self-aligned junction FETs and a bias resistor has been fabricated on a semi-insulating InP substrate. The fabrication processes are highly compatible between the photodiode and the JFET, and reduction in FET gate length is achieved using anisotropic selective etching and a two-step OMVPE growth schedule. The 80 pm diameter p-i-n detector exhibits a leakage current of 2 nA and a capacitance of about 0.35 pF at -5 V bias voltage. Extrinsic transconductance and a gate-source capacitance of the JFET are typically 45 mS/mm and 4.0 pF/mm at OV, respectively. The maximum voltage gain of the pre-amplifier is 12.5 and the bandwidth of the p-i-n amplifier OEIC is expected to be about 1.2 GHz

    Extreme Duplication-type, Nonseparated Fenestration of the Basilar Artery in a Patient with Pontine Infarction: Confirmation with Virtual Arterial Endoscopy

    We present a case of a 55-year-old woman with pontine infarction and fenestration of the basilar artery that was demonstrated using virtual endoscopy. The patient had motor weakness of the right side with sudden onset. Diffusion- and T2-weighted MR images revealed high signal intensities in the left pontine regions, and an MR angiographic examination showed the double-lumen sign of the basilar artery. An extensive duplication-type, nonseparated fenestration of the basilar artery was diagnosed by virtual endoscopy and craniocaudal communications with discrete openings were observed.     A Case of Hypothyroidism and Type 2 Diabetes Associated with Type V Hyperlipoproteinemia and Eruptive Xanthomas

    Primary hypothyroidism and type 2 diabetes are both typically associated with the increased level of triglycerides. To date, there have been only a few case reports of type 2 diabetes patients with both type V hyperlipoproteinemia and eruptive xanthomas, but there have been no reports of hypothyroidism patients associated with eruptive xanthomas. We report here on a case of a 48-yr old female patient who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and primary hypothyroidism associated with both type V hyperlipoproteinemia and eruptive xanthomas. We found rouleaux formation of RBCs in peripheral blood smear, elevated TSH, and low free T4 level, and dyslipidemia (total cholesterol 18.1 mM/L, triglyceride 61.64 mM/L, HDL 3.0 mM/L, and LDL 2.54 mM/L). She has taken fenofibrate, levothyroxine, and oral hypoglycemic agent for 4 months. After treatment, both TSH level and lipid concentration returned to normal range, and her yellowish skin nodules have also disappeared

    Tuning CO2 Hydrogenation Selectivity through Reaction-Driven Restructuring on Cu-Ni Bimetal Catalysts

    Tuning the selectivity of CO2 hydrogenation is of significant scientific interest, especially using nickel-based catalysts. Fundamental insights into CO2 hydrogenation on Ni-based catalysts demonstrate that CO is a primary intermediate, and product selectivity is strongly dependent on the oxidation state of Ni. Therefore, modifying the electronic structure of the nickel surface is a compelling strategy for tuning product selectivity. Herein, we synthesized well dispersed Cu-Ni bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) using a simple hydrothermal method for CO selective CO2 hydrogenation. A detailed study on the monometallic (Ni and Cu) and bimetallic (CuxNi1-x) catalysts supported on gamma-Al2O3 was performed to increase CO selectivity while maintaining the high reaction rate. The Cu0.5Ni0.5/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst shows a high CO2 conversion and more CO product selectivity than its monometallic counterparts. The surface electronic and geometric structure of Cu0.5Ni0.5 bimetallic NPs was studied using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy under reaction conditions. The Cu core atoms migrate toward the surface, resulting in the restructuring of the Cu@Ni core-shell structure to a Cu-Ni alloy during the reaction and functioning as the active site by enhancing CO desorption. A systematic correlation is obtained between catalytic activity from a continuous fixed-bed flow reactor and the surface electronic structural details derived from AP-XPS results, establishing the structure-activity relationship. This investigation contributes to providing a strategy for controlling CO2 hydrogenation selectivity by modifying the surface structure of bimetallic NP catalysts.11Nsciescopu
