Limitations on the extent of off-center displacements in TbMnO3 from EXAFS measurements
We present EXAFS data at the Mn K and Tb L3 edges that provide upper limits
on the possible displacements of any atoms in TbMnO3. The displacements must be
less than 0.005-0.01A for all atoms which eliminates the possibility of
moderate distortions (0.02A) with a small c-axis component, but for which the
displacements in the ab plane average to zero. Assuming the polarization arises
from a displacement of the O2 atoms along the c-axis, the measured polarization
then leads to an O2 displacement that is at least 6X10^{-4}A, well below our
experimental limit. Thus a combination of the EXAFS and the measured electrical
polarization indicate that the atomic displacements likely lie in the range

Cytokine responses of bovine macrophages to diverse clinical Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis strains
BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), the causative agent of Johne's disease (JD) persistently infects and survives within the host macrophages. While it is established that substantial genotypic variation exists among MAP, evidence for the correlates that associate specific MAP genotypes with clinical or sub-clinical disease phenotypes is presently unknown. Thus we studied strain differences in intracellular MAP survival and host responses in a bovine monocyte derived macrophage (MDM) system. RESULTS: Intracellular survival studies showed that a bovine MAP isolate (B1018) and a human MAP isolate (Hu6) persisted in relatively higher numbers when compared with a sheep MAP isolate (S7565) at 24-hr, 48-hr and 96-hr post infection (PI). MDMs stimulated with B1018 up-regulated IL-10 at the transcript level and down-regulated TNFα at the protein and transcript levels compared with stimulations by the S7565 and Hu6. MDMs infected with Hu6 showed a down regulatory pattern of IL-10 and TNFα compared to stimulations by S7565. Cells stimulated with B1018 and Hu6 had low levels of matrix metalloprotease-3 (MMP3) and high levels of tissue inhibitor of metalloprotease-1 (TIMP1) at 96-hr PI relative to MDMs stimulated by S7565. CONCLUSION: Taken together, results suggest that the bovine (B1018) and the human (Hu6) MAP isolates lead to anti-inflammatory and anti-invasive pathways in the macrophage environment whereas the sheep (S7565) MAP isolate induces a pro-inflammatory pathway. Thus the infecting strain genotype may play a role in polarizing the host immune responses and dictate the clinicopathological outcomes in this economically important disease
Preheating and Affleck-Dine leptogenesis after thermal inflation
Previously, we proposed a model of low energy Affleck-Dine leptogenesis in
the context of thermal inflation. The lepton asymmetry is generated at the end
of thermal inflation, which occurs at a relatively low energy scale with the
Hubble parameter somewhere in the range 1 \keV \lesssim H \lesssim 1 \MeV.
Thus Hubble damping will be ineffective in bringing the Affleck-Dine field into
the lepton conserving region near the origin, leaving the possibility that the
lepton number could be washed out. Previously, we suggested that preheating
could damp the amplitude of the Affleck-Dine field allowing conservation of the
lepton number. In this paper, we demonstrate numerically that preheating does
efficiently damp the amplitude of the Affleck-Dine field and that the lepton
number is conserved as the result. In addition to demonstrating a crucial
aspect of our model, it also opens the more general possibility of low energy
Affleck-Dine baryogenesis.Comment: 38 pages, 17 figure

The transcriptional response of Caenorhabditis elegans to ivermectin exposure identifies novel genes involved in the response to reduced food intake
We have examined the transcriptional response of Caenorhabditis elegans following exposure to the anthelmintic drug ivermectin (IVM) using whole genome microarrays and real-time QPCR. Our original aim was to identify candidate molecules involved in IVM metabolism and/or excretion. For this reason the IVM tolerant strain, DA1316, was used to minimise transcriptomic changes related to the phenotype of drug exposure. However, unlike equivalent work with benzimidazole drugs, very few of the induced genes were members of xenobiotic metabolising enzyme families. Instead, the transcriptional response was dominated by genes associated with fat mobilization and fatty acid metabolism including catalase, esterase, and fatty acid CoA synthetase genes. This is consistent with the reduction in pharyngeal pumping, and consequential reduction in food intake, upon exposure of DA1316 worms to IVM. Genes with the highest fold change in response to IVM exposure, cyp-37B1, mtl-1 and scl-2, were comparably up-regulated in response to short–term food withdrawal (4 hr) independent of IVM exposure, and GFP reporter constructs confirm their expression in tissues associated with fat storage (intestine and hypodermis). These experiments have serendipitously identified novel genes involved in an early response of C. elegans to reduced food intake and may provide insight into similar processes in higher organisms
Off-shell superconformal nonlinear sigma-models in three dimensions
We develop superspace techniques to construct general off-shell N=1,2,3,4
superconformal sigma-models in three space-time dimensions. The most general
N=3 and N=4 superconformal sigma-models are constructed in terms of N=2 chiral
superfields. Several superspace proofs of the folklore statement that N=3
supersymmetry implies N=4 are presented both in the on-shell and off-shell
settings. We also elaborate on (super)twistor realisations for (super)manifolds
on which the three-dimensional N-extended superconformal groups act

The mu problem and sneutrino inflation
We consider sneutrino inflation and post-inflation cosmology in the singlet
extension of the MSSM with approximate Peccei-Quinn(PQ) symmetry, assuming that
supersymmetry breaking is mediated by gauge interaction. The PQ symmetry is
broken by the intermediate-scale VEVs of two flaton fields, which are
determined by the interplay between radiative flaton soft masses and higher
order terms. Then, from the flaton VEVs, we obtain the correct mu term and the
right-handed(RH) neutrino masses for see-saw mechanism. We show that the RH
sneutrino with non-minimal gravity coupling drives inflation, thanks to the
same flaton coupling giving rise to the RH neutrino mass. After inflation,
extra vector-like states, that are responsible for the radiative breaking of
the PQ symmetry, results in thermal inflation with the flaton field, solving
the gravitino problem caused by high reheating temperature. Our model predicts
the spectral index to be n_s\simeq 0.96 due to the additional efoldings from
thermal inflation. We show that a right dark matter abundance comes from the
gravitino of 100 keV mass and a successful baryogenesis is possible via

Unilateral Pulmonary Edema: A Rare Initial Presentation of Cardiogenic Shock due to Acute Myocardial Infarction
Cardiogenic unilateral pulmonary edema (UPE) is a rare clinical entity that is often misdiagnosed at first. Most cases of cardiogenic UPE occur in the right upper lobe and are caused by severe mitral regurgitation (MR). We present an unusual case of right-sided UPE in a patient with cardiogenic shock due to acute myocardial infarction (AMI) without severe MR. The patient was successfully treated by percutaneous coronary intervention and medical therapy for heart failure. Follow-up chest Radiography showed complete resolution of the UPE. This case reminds us that AMI can present as UPE even in patients without severe MR or any preexisting pulmonary disease affecting the vasculature or parenchyma of the lung
SRAO CO Observation of 11 Supernova Remnants in l = 70 to 190 deg
We present the results of 12CO J = 1-0 line observations of eleven Galactic
supernova remnants (SNRs) obtained using the Seoul Radio Astronomy Observatory
(SRAO) 6-m radio telescope. The observation was made as a part of the SRAO CO
survey of SNRs between l = 70 and 190 deg, which is intended to identify SNRs
interacting with molecular clouds. The mapping areas for the individual SNRs
are determined to cover their full extent in the radio continuum. We used
halfbeam grid spacing (60") for 9 SNRs and full-beam grid spacing (120") for
the rest. We detected CO emission towards most of the remnants. In six SNRs,
molecular clouds showed a good spatial relation with their radio morphology,
although no direct evidence for the interaction was detected. Two SNRs are
particularly interesting: G85.4+0.7, where there is a filamentary molecular
cloud along the radio shell, and 3C434.1, where a large molecular cloud appears
to block the western half of the remnant. We briefly summarize the results

Platinum Assisted Vapor–Liquid–Solid Growth of Er–Si Nanowires and Their Optical Properties
We report the optical activation of erbium coated silicon nanowires (Er–SiNWs) grown with the assist of platinum (Pt) and gold (Au), respectively. The NWs were grown on Si substrates by using a chemical vapor transport process using SiCl4 and ErCl4 as precursors. Pt as well as Au worked successfully as vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) catalysts for growing SiNWs with diameters of ~100 nm and length of several micrometers, respectively. The SiNWs have core–shell structures where the Er-crystalline layer is sandwiched between silica layers. Photoluminescence spectra analyses showed the optical activity of SiNWs from both Pt and Au. A stronger Er3+ luminescence of 1,534 nm was observed from the SiNWs with Pt at room- and low-temperature (25 K) using the 488- and/or 477-nm line of an Ar laser that may be due to the uniform incorporation of more Er ions into NWs with the exclusion of the formation of catalyst-induced deep levels in the band-gap. Pt would be used as a VLS catalyst for high performance optically active Er–SiNWs
