The Impact of Line Misidentification on Cosmological Constraints from Euclid and other Spectroscopic Galaxy Surveys
We perform forecasts for how baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale and
redshift-space distortion (RSD) measurements from future spectroscopic emission
line galaxy (ELG) surveys such as Euclid are degraded in the presence of
spectral line misidentification. Using analytic calculations verified with mock
galaxy catalogs from log-normal simulations we find that constraints are
degraded in two ways, even when the interloper power spectrum is modeled
correctly in the likelihood. Firstly, there is a loss of signal-to-noise ratio
for the power spectrum of the target galaxies, which propagates to all
cosmological constraints and increases with contamination fraction, .
Secondly, degeneracies can open up between and cosmological parameters.
In our calculations this typically increases BAO scale uncertainties at the
10-20% level when marginalizing over parameters determining the broadband power
spectrum shape. External constraints on , or parameters determining the
shape of the power spectrum, for example from cosmic microwave background (CMB)
measurements, can remove this effect. There is a near-perfect degeneracy
between and the power spectrum amplitude for low values, where
is not well determined from the contaminated sample alone. This has the
potential to strongly degrade RSD constraints. The degeneracy can be broken
with an external constraint on , for example from cross-correlation with a
separate galaxy sample containing the misidentified line, or deeper
sub-surveys.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, updated to match version accepted by ApJ (extra

Classification of scale-free networks
While the emergence of a power law degree distribution in complex networks is
intriguing, the degree exponent is not universal. Here we show that the
betweenness centrality displays a power-law distribution with an exponent \eta
which is robust and use it to classify the scale-free networks. We have
observed two universality classes with \eta \approx 2.2(1) and 2.0,
respectively. Real world networks for the former are the protein interaction
networks, the metabolic networks for eukaryotes and bacteria, and the
co-authorship network, and those for the latter one are the Internet, the
world-wide web, and the metabolic networks for archaea. Distinct features of
the mass-distance relation, generic topology of geodesics and resilience under
attack of the two classes are identified. Various model networks also belong to
either of the two classes while their degree exponents are tunable.Comment: 6 Pages, 6 Figures, 1 tabl
Probing Cosmic Strings with Satellite CMB measurements
We study the problem of searching for cosmic string signal patterns in the
present high resolution and high sensitivity observations of the Cosmic
Microwave Background (CMB). This article discusses a technique capable of
recognizing Kaiser-Stebbins effect signatures in total intensity anisotropy
maps, and shows that the biggest factor that produces confusion is represented
by the acoustic oscillation features of the scale comparable to the size of
horizon at recombination. Simulations show that the distribution of null
signals for pure Gaussian maps converges to a distribution, with
detectability threshold corresponding to a string induced step signal with an
amplitude of about 100 \muK which corresponds to a limit of roughly . We study the statistics of spurious detections caused by
extra-Galactic and Galactic foregrounds. For diffuse Galactic foregrounds,
which represents the dominant source of contamination, we derive sky masks
outlining the available region of the sky where the Galactic confusion is
sub-dominant, specializing our analysis to the case represented by the
frequency coverage and nominal sensitivity and resolution of the Planck
experiment.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, to be published in JCA
Holomorphic selection rules, the origin of the mu term, and thermal inflation
When an abelian gauge theory with integer charges is spontaneously broken by
the expectation value of a charge Q field, there remains a Z_Q discrete
symmetry. In a supersymmetric theory, holomorphy adds additional constraints on
the operators that can appear in the effective superpotential. As a result,
operators with the same mass dimension but opposite sign charges can have very
different coupling strengths. In the present work we characterize the operator
hierarchies in the effective theory due to holomorphy, and show that there
exist simple relationships between the size of an operator and its mass
dimension and charge. Using such holomorphy-induced operator hierarchies, we
construct a simple model with a naturally small supersymmetric mu term. This
model also provides a concrete realization of late-time thermal inflation,
which has the ability to solve the gravitino and moduli problems of weak-scale
supersymmetry.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figur
Two Circular-Rotational Eigenmodes in Vortex Gyrotropic Motions in Soft Magnetic Nanodots
We found, by micromagnetic numerical and analytical calculations, that the
clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) circular-rotational motions of a
magnetic vortex core in a soft magnetic circular nanodot are the elementary
eigenmodes existing in the gyrotropic motion with respect to the corresponding
CW and CCW circular-rotational-field eigenbasis. Any steady-state vortex
gyrotropic motions driven by a linearly polarized oscillating in-plane magnetic
field in the linear regime can be perfectly understood according to the
superposition of the two circular eigenmodes, which show asymmetric resonance
characteristics reflecting the vortex polarization. The relative magnitudes in
the amplitude and phase between the CCW and CW eigenmodes determine the
elongation and orientation of the orbital trajectories of the vortex core
motions, respectively, which trajectories vary with the polarization and
chirality of the given vortex as well as the field frequency across the
resonance frequency.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figure
Soft x-ray polarizer for optical productions of any orthogonal state of the linear and circular polarization modes
An efficient soft x-ray polarizer that is able to optically convert a linear polarization state to any orthogonal state of not only linear but also circular polarization modes is found by means of numerical calculations of the intensities of individual orthogonal polarization components in reflected waves. Calculation results, using the known linear-polarization-mode based Kerr matrix as well as a newly derived circular-polarization-mode based Kerr matrix, indicate that a +45?? or -45?? linearly polarized incident wave can be readily converted to any orthogonal states of both circular and linear polarization modes, i.e., left- and right-handed circular and s - and p -linear polarizations through reflection, at certain grazing angles of incidence near the critical angle from a simple ferromagnetic thin film of Co (9.0 nm) Si substrate. The intensities of almost pure circularly or linearly polarized reflected waves are about 10% or less in a certain spectral soft x-ray range just below the absorption edges of constituent magnetic elements. The counterpart orthogonal states of the linear as well as circular modes can be rapidly switched simply by reversing oppositely the orientation of longitudinal magnetizations. These results suggest that the orthogonal polarization states of the circular- and linear-polarization modes converted from such a polarizing optical element through reflection can be practically used in probing the vector quantities of element specific magnetizations in multicomponent magnetic materials.open2
Purification and detection of entangled coherent states
In [J. C. Howell and J. A. Yeazell, Phys. Rev. A 62, 012102 (2000)], a
proposal is made to generate entangled macroscopically distinguishable states
of two spatially separated traveling optical modes. We model the decoherence
due to light scattering during the propagation along an optical transmission
line and propose a setup allowing an entanglement purification from a number of
preparations which are partially decohered due to transmission. A purification
is achieved even without any manual intervention. We consider a nondemolition
configuration to measure the purity of the state as contrast of interference
fringes in a double-slit setup. Regarding the entangled coherent states as a
state of a bipartite quantum system, a close relationship between purity and
entanglement of formation can be obtained. In this way, the contrast of
interference fringes provides a direct means to measure entanglement.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, using Revtex
Aesthetic approach to green transportation planning in tourism with design factors
Green transportation technology has become a new paradigm in transportation engineeringfields over the whole world. Most attention, however, has been paid to mitigate greenhousegases or energy consumption, seldom reported pro-environment design in aesthetic aspect. Itis well known that a proper design of train enhances traveler satisfaction and contributes todemand increase in public transportation. Hence, aesthetic factors should be consideredsignificantly. However, a difficult problem for reflecting aesthetic aspect is that there is noclear design standard for railway to reflect aesthetic features. This paper aims to suggestaesthetic factors to be guidance of rail transit planning in tourist attractions. We begin bydefining a term ‘aesthetic in railway system’ based on literature and empirical review. In thispaper, the definition is divided into two complementary views: (I) Sight-seeing mechanismfrom inside to outside. (II) Vehicle exterior design harmonized with surrounding environment.Based on the definitions, design factors are suggested: window size, speed, routes, type oftrack, color, and size of train system. Each factor is explained with its standard. A result of evaluating rail transit with the factors shows that wireless tram is the most suitable transit for tourism. Limitations and improvements of the study are also suggested. Keywords: Green transportation technology; Public transportation; Aesthetic factor; Touris
Fermi Velocity Spectrum and Incipient Magnetism in TiBe2
We address the origin of the incipient magnetism in TiBe through precise
first principles calculations, which overestimate the ferromagnetic tendency
and therefore require correction to account for spin fluctuations. TiBe has
sharp fine structure in its electronic density of states, with a van Hove
singularity only 3 meV above the Fermi level. Similarly to the isovalent weak
ferromagnet ZrZn, it is flat bands along the K-W-U lines of hexagonal face
of the fcc Brillouin zone make the system prone to magnetism, and more so if
electrons are added. We find that the Moriya coefficient (multiplying
in the fluctuation susceptibility )
is divergent when the velocity vanishes at a point on the Fermi surface, which
is very close (3 meV) to occurring in TiBe. In exploring how the FM
instability (the =0 Stoner enhancement is ) might be suppressed
by fluctuations in TiBe, we calculate that the Moriya A coefficient (of
) is negative, so =0 is not the primary instability. Explicit
calculation of shows that its maximum occurs at the X point
; TiBe is thus an incipient {\it anti}ferromagnet
rather than ferromagnet as has been supposed. We further show that simple
temperature smearing of the peak accounts for most of the temperature
dependence of the susceptibility, which previously had been attributed to local
moments (via a Curie-Weiss fit), and that energy dependence of the density of
states also strongly affects the magnetic field variation of
Rules for Computing Symmetry, Density and Stoichiometry in a Quasi-Unit-Cell Model of Quasicrystals
The quasi-unit cell picture describes the atomic structure of quasicrystals
in terms of a single, repeating cluster which overlaps neighbors according to
specific overlap rules. In this paper, we discuss the precise relationship
between a general atomic decoration in the quasi-unit cell picture atomic
decorations in the Penrose tiling and in related tiling pictures. Using these
relations, we obtain a simple, practical method for determining the density,
stoichiometry and symmetry of a quasicrystal based on the atomic decoration of
the quasi-unit cell taking proper account of the sharing of atoms between
clusters.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
