    On the Semantics of "Now" in Databases

    While "now" is expressed in SQL as CURRENT-TIMESTAMP within queries, this value cannot be stored in the database. However, this notion of an ever-increasing current-time value has been reflected in some temporal data models by inclusion of database-resident variables, such as "now," "until-changed," "â," "@" and "-." Time variables are very desirable, but their use also leads to a new type of database, consisting of tuples with variables, termed a variable database. This paper proposes a framework for defining the semantics of the variable databases of temporal relational data models. A framework is presented because several reasonable meanings may be given to databases that use some of the specific temporal variables that have appeared in the literature. Using the framework, the paper defines a useful semantics for such databases. Because situations occur where the existing time variables are inadequate, two new types of modeling entities that address these shortcomings, timestamps which we call now-relative and now-relative indeterminate, are introduced and defined within the framework. Moreover, the paper provides a foundation, using algebraic bind operators, for the querying of variable databases via existing query languages. This transition to variable databases presented here requires minimal change to the query processor. Finally, to underline the practical feasibility of variable databases, we show that database variables can be precisely specified and efficiently implemented in conventional query languages, such as SQL, and in temporal query languages, such as TSQL2.Information Systems Working Papers Serie

    Motor skills and exercise capacity are associated with objective measures of cognitive functions and academic performance in preadolescent children

    To investigate associations between motor skills, exercise capacity and cognitive functions, and evaluate how they correlate to academic performance in mathematics and reading comprehension using standardised, objective tests.This cross-sectional study included 423 Danish children (age: 9.29±0.35 years, 209 girls). Fine and gross motor skills were evaluated in a visuomotor accuracy-tracking task, and a whole-body coordination task, respectively. Exercise capacity was estimated from the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery level 1 children's test (YYIR1C). Selected tests from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) were used to assess different domains of cognitive functions, including sustained attention, spatial working memory, episodic and semantic memory, and processing speed. Linear mixed-effects models were used to investigate associations between these measures and the relationship with standard tests of academic performance in mathematics and reading comprehension.Both fine and gross motor skills were associated with better performance in all five tested cognitive domains (all P<0.001), whereas exercise capacity was only associated with better sustained attention (P<0.046) and spatial working memory (P<0.038). Fine and gross motor skills (all P<0.001), exercise capacity and cognitive functions such as working memory, episodic memory, sustained attention and processing speed were all associated with better performance in mathematics and reading comprehension.The data demonstrate that fine and gross motor skills are positively correlated with several aspects of cognitive functions and with academic performance in both mathematics and reading comprehension. Moreover, exercise capacity was associated with academic performance and performance in some cognitive domains. Future interventions should investigate associations between changes in motor skills, exercise capacity, cognitive functions, and academic performance to elucidate the causality of these associations

    Acute exercise and motor memory consolidation:The role of exercise timing

    High intensity aerobic exercise amplifies offline gains in procedural memory acquired during motor practice. This effect seems to be evident when exercise is placed immediately after acquisition, during the first stages of memory consolidation, but the importance of temporal proximity of the exercise bout used to stimulate improvements in procedural memory is unknown. The effects of three different temporal placements of high intensity exercise were investigated following visuomotor skill acquisition on the retention of motor memory in 48 young (24.0 ± 2.5 yrs), healthy male subjects randomly assigned to one of four groups either performing a high intensity (90% Maximal Power Output) exercise bout at 20 min (EX90), 1 h (EX90+1), 2 h (EX90+2) after acquisition or rested (CON). Retention tests were performed at 1 d (R1) and 7 d (R7). At R1 changes in performance scores after acquisition were greater for EX90 than CON (p<0.001) and EX90+2 (p=0.001). At R7 changes in performance scores for EX90, EX90+1, and EX90+2 were higher than CON (p<0.001, p=0.008, and p=0.008, resp.). Changes for EX90 at R7 were greater than EX90+2 (p=0.049). Exercise-induced improvements in procedural memory diminish as the temporal proximity of exercise from acquisition is increased.     Polycystic ovary syndrome and hyperglycaemia in pregnancy. A narrative review and results from a prospective Danish cohort study

    Insulin resistance is common in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS may be associated with increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).To 1) review literature regarding PCOS and hyperglycaemia in pregnancy and 2) present original data from Odense Child Cohort (OCC) regarding GDM in PCOS.Literature search including original studies from 2000-18. OCC included 2,548 pregnant women, 9.5 % (n=241) had PCOS. Fasting plasma glucose was measured in 1,519 and 659 oral glucose tolerance tests were performed (with risk factor for GDM, n= 384, without risk factors, n=275), applying two different GDM criteria RESULTS: 30 studies were eligible using 12 different sets of diagnostic criteria for GDM. Ten studies included n > 50, control group, assessment of GDM and BMI. Results were not uniform, but supported that higher BMI, higher age, Asian ethnicity, and fertility treatment increased the risk of GDM in PCOS. In OCC, women with PCOS and controls had similar prevalences of GDM independent of different sets of criteria for GDM.PCOS may not be an individual risk factor for GDM. Pregnancies in PCOS are characterized by factors known to increase risk of GDM, especially high BMI and fertility treatment

    Higher blood pressure in normal weight women with PCOS compared to controls

    Objective: Obesity is considered to be the strongest predictive factor for cardio-metabolic risk in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The aim of the study was to compare blood pressure (BP) in normal weight women with PCOS and controls matched for age and BMI. Methods: From a Nordic cross-sectional base of 2615 individuals of Nordic ethnicity, we studied a sub cohort of 793 normal weight women with BMI = 140/90 mmHg was 11.1% (57/ 512) in women with PCOS vs 1.8% (5/281) in controls, P = 35 years the prevalence of BP >= 140/90 mmHg was comparable in women with PCOS and controls (12.7% vs 9.8%, P = 0.6). Using multiple regression analyses, the strongest association with BP was found for age, waist circumference, and total cholesterol in women with PCOS. Conclusions: Normal weight women with PCOS have higher BP than controls. BP and metabolic screening are relevant also in young normal weight women with PCOS.Peer reviewe
